Apple Will Refund Some Money to MobileMe Users

Anyone else worried about losing their iWeb site? I know it's not the most used thing, but to me, the web space has always been fun to have

Glad I stuck with gmail, dropbox. Me was .Mac before and iTools before that, they are changing the service too often and forcing you to change also. The way I see it, gmail won't change for some time, it will just improve. Dropbox is no 20gb, lucky for me I have 15gb in total free and it does what I need it to do very well.

I do hope cloud is the final step for at least the next 10years, a service that won't become obsolete but a service that is built upon and continue to exist.

When did you enter it in? I tried looking now and they seem to have taken down the renewal link.

I entered it like 4 months ago. However my renewal was not due until June 30th. So I won't expire until June 30th 2012

Good move by apple. I never expected them to leave their loyal customers who signed up for mobileme which just happened to be a small letdown compared to the recent icloud.

From what I noticed mobileme was extended to June 30th 2012 for free. I was also emailed offered a full refund for the unused key linked to my account.

The iCloud service is going to be about the same as mobileme but FREE! free .me account, free 5GB for mail, contacts, ical (for web space too I think). Your not losing anything. Your GAINING everything they offered at mobileme for free. This seems like a GREAT move by Apple as this is something Google has been offering. Now Apple is on the same page. Additional Storage for backups can be purchased but I don't think we will see pricing until Lion.

There must be thousands of people in this situation. Apple must come out with a solution otherwise none of them will make the switch until mobleme goes off line, and lots will switch to a different non apple provider.

Surely it isn't difficult to do, especially if both my MobileMe and Apple ID are linked to the some computer and iOS device and credit information.

It has been asked and answers by many others. When you move to iCloud, you keep your .mac or .me email accounts. It's just a back-end server switch.
Is there confirmation of this? I naturally assumed that I'd get to keep my .mac/me email addresses when the switch happens.

Why would anyone cancel their MobileMe account now, so close to the iCloud switchover? Surely they'll be losing their email address as a result?

I just received a full refund and all my services have been extended to June 2012.

I renewed my MobileMe subscription at the end of May because I didn't want to lose my data. I was just hoping they'd provide some kinda solution when iCloud came out.

I just went ahead and pressed cancel subscription in the MobileMe account page, ticking the refund tick box. I made sure I backed up all my data first in case their "you will lose all your data and will not be able to renew later" came true.

I was a little concerned when the account cancelled and wouldn't let me log back in, but I figured that they must have something in place and would extend me for free like everyone else. I sent an email to myself on my iPhone, so that when it did reinstate I would know.

Low and behold, my email delivered an hour later. I was able to log into MobileMe and see that my subscription is now extended until June next year. Everything has been working fine since and I've just received a credit invoice for the whole amount.

Yes, kinda risky strategy, but I've got my money back and uninterrupted service until iCloud gets wheeled in.

Thanks for the update. :)

I'm reasonably indifferent to the whole thing. It's great that I won't have to pay any more for my .mac address (about the only thing I use MobileMe for) and I should be mad that I renewed about 4 months ago from a non-approved reseller, but as a long-time .Mac/MobileMe user, I can still remember the pain of the transition, the free extensions, the string of support emails... Hell, they still haven't got the fonts in MobileMe mail to display properly in Safari, never mind Chrome. I'll stick with MobileMe for the free extension until all of the migration bugs are worked out of iCloud, then move across with less stress.

I'm a little confused about iDisk and Galleries.

What happens to iDisk? I work off the iDisk "cloud" a lot. I have a lot of documents stored on iDisk. What happens to them? Further, where further I upload files so other can download them? It's nice to upload a file and then have an link sent out via e-mail.

Photo galleries. What will replace them?

Thanks.

As far as I am aware, iDisk and Galleries will cease to exist as they are not a part of iCloud. Galleries is to be replaced by the 'Photo Stream' feature of iCloud. I don't think there will be a iDisk replacement.

Have you tried Dropbox?

It works miles better than iDisk and you get 2GB of storage to try free.

Losing galleries however is going to be a major, major problem if that happens. They're one of the easiest and best ways to share and store super high quality images in a streamline and gorgeous interface. I've set up several for friends'/relatives' weddings so that everyone there can upload and download pics/videos in HQ in one place. If they get rid of them I'm going to ****ing kill somebody.

I don't know about the killing, but I agree about the galleries. It isnt about syncing for me. The galleries are terrific and simple to use and I will miss them greatly, unless they add the feature to icloud. I would pay an extra amount for the offsite backup and galleries features.

The bigger issue here (so it seems) is people like myself who have had an AppleID for quite some time, then signed up for MobileMe.

If iOS 5 has you sign in with your AppleID to keep track of music/app purchases, etc... but you have a different account for your email/contacts/calendars through MobileMe... there doesn't seem to be a decent way (at this point, at least) to merge the two accounts.

for reference, here's some people explaining the issue better:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/15351517

you can always change your Apple ID login email and password to match your mobileme, so when your MM gets converted to an "icloud" account the info is the same. Kind of lame though, I'm assuming apple will have a process to deal with this at some point.

Regarding the merging of Apple IDs, I just had this lovely chat with an Apple SupportBot who didn't really acknowledged the question

Kevin:
I think I'm going to have a problem with iCloud since my current MobileMe and iTunes accounts are separate. Is there a way to merge them or will there be?

Tonya:
I understand your concern with the iCloud and I will do my best to assist you

Tonya:
Have you contacted us about this issue before?

Kevin:
No, iCloud was only announced yesterday. But there has been no information provided about merging my iTunes putrchase history on one ID with my MobileMe data. Obviously iCloud manages iTunes purchase history along with a set of services currently provided by MobileMe

Kevin:
But when I migrate MobileMe to iCloud, how will I bring in my iTunes purchase history which is associated with a different account?

Tonya:
Kevin, I understand that you have questions and concerns about the transition from Mobileme to iCloud, but at this time, we are not able to comment past what has been announced, I apologize for any confusion.

Kevin:
Is there any way to merge two Apple IDs?

Tonya:
One moment please

Tonya:
FAQ's Apple ID

Tonya:
Please take a look at this link in regards to your Apple ID

Kevin:
If the Apple IDs can't be consolidated, this will negatively affect the iCloud experience for those of us who would like to keep both our purchase history and our MobileMe email

Tonya:
I assure you that Apple will make sure all the details are taken care of once iCloud is officially released

Kevin:
Thank you

Tonya:
Did I address your reason for chatting with us today?

Kevin:
Vague promise of future resolution, that's sufficient for now until the service is launched

Kevin:
Yes, thank you

Tonya:
You are very welcome. It was my goal to provide you with excellent customer service today. If I have done so, please click on the gray "End Chat" button to answer a few short questions.

I've tried this, it says something like "that email address is already associated with another Apple ID" or something like that

I got an email sayign they extended my MobileMe until June of 2012...if there is no difference in what service levels I get with MM vs the iCloud (other than the cloud piece being added) what's the point? There seems to be something missing here.

I got the mobileme trial a while back and cancelled it before being charged. I am still able to logon to me.com with my @me.com account. There just aren't any services available except for find my ipone. I wonder if I can use that same account to register with iCloud or will I have to use my regular Apple ID that I have always used with iTunes.

Thanks for the info.

I bought extra codes at a discount when I purchased iphones last fall. But I already had some discounted codes that couldn't be entered until January and these were going to have to wait another year. You could only enter one code per year I guess. I was using every opportunity to get the discounted price.

After entering the information, it tells you that you will receive an email with instructions to send them a scan of the codes from the box.

Edit: just got the email for sending scans.

I received an e-mail from Apple that I could send in a request for a refund. My original subscription was to end in September 2011, but when I bought my new MBP in March, it came with a MobileMe box. I entered the code in April to extend the subscription.

Since the code was not "active" until September, Apple sent an e-mail showing how to request a refund. They acknowledged getting the request but states it take 4-6 weeks to process the refund. I assume it will be for $99 for that year subscription.

iCloud is a totally separate service, and it doesn't offer several of the bigger MobileMe features, like 20GB of online storage, iDisk, Photo Galleries, or web hosting.
