The bigger issue here (so it seems) is people like myself who have had an AppleID for quite some time, then signed up for MobileMe.

If iOS 5 has you sign in with your AppleID to keep track of music/app purchases, etc... but you have a different account for your email/contacts/calendars through MobileMe... there doesn't seem to be a decent way (at this point, at least) to merge the two accounts.

for reference, here's some people explaining the issue better:

One of the posts in that thread contains a link to this useful document:

In a nutshell, you switch off MobileMe syncing for Calendars, Mail and Contacts, but when promoted choose 'Keep on my iPhone'.

This process kills MobileMe syncing, but keeps a local copy of all this data on the device.

Then you switch on iCloud, and the data is migrated.

I won't belabor anyone with how I spent an hour trying to deactivate my MobileMe account, without asking for a rebate. I finally hung up during a Chat session with an Apple employee around noon on Sunday (6/12).
Best result: I just signed off the account and to hell with it.
I won't be using iCloud either, just as I have never bought any more Apple computers or screens because I will not, cannot, use glossy screens.
Yes, I use Minis and non-Apple screens.
Problem solved.

You know, I think I've scored big time on this. I mean, talk about perfect timing. See, I bought my mac last year... the rep raved about mobileme, but I never wanted to spend the cash.

Well, in May... I decided to give it a go. So I started a trial subscription.

This just hit.

Which means I get a year and 2 months of mobileme... with all the shiny features, for NOTHING. That's right, I never paid a dime. All through the magic of timing and procrastination.

And now that i've figured out how to find my iPod from mobile me (I'm always losing it in the house, or my purse, or whatever) I just can't rave enough.

Thanks, iCloud.
