iCloud is a totally separate service, and it doesn't offer several of the bigger MobileMe features, like 20GB of online storage, iDisk, Photo Galleries, or web hosting.

Thank you for that. I don't use any of those features anymore so iCloud is good to go with me.

The bigger issue here (so it seems) is people like myself who have had an AppleID for quite some time, then signed up for MobileMe.

If iOS 5 has you sign in with your AppleID to keep track of music/app purchases, etc... but you have a different account for your email/contacts/calendars through MobileMe... there doesn't seem to be a decent way (at this point, at least) to merge the two accounts.

for reference, here's some people explaining the issue better:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/15351517

I'm in exactly the same fix. All my purchases are tied to one Apple ID and all my Mobile Me stuff is tied to another ID. Neither had anything to do with the other and could potentially be a big ole mess

me.com alias accounts

I am concerned with the alias that i have associated with my @me.com account. So far there is no word if they will still allow them, or if I will be able to keep it.

I know that an alias is not a "real" email account, but I use mine for freelance because i did not want to pay for a separate .me account. In fact that is what apple suggested that I do. Why didn't i name my main account that. Well I made my main account up about 4 years before I created my freelance company.

I really hope that apple will still allow alias on the iCloud or at least addresses the issue.

Whither iWeb?

So, great. No more hosting service. So what will become of iWeb?:(

Yes, iWeb can publish to any server now, but it's an extra step for most new users that wasn't necessary with MobileMe - it just worked.

I've published a few non-MobileMe iWeb sites, and they often do not behave properly - I guess they'll have to update the program to not rely on any of MobileMe's server dependencies - doable, but what will they do about all the people who are currently hosted at MobileMe?

Does this affect that many people? I know Galleries are a very popular feature, but iWeb is a great little website builder - for its intended audience.:p

iCloud sounds great, but MobileMe has worked well for me and my three devices for the last two years. Anyway - I do look forward to the iCloud - I just wish Apple would be a little more honest about these "transitions" - without real information, people will start making assumptions. As they say at Apple - "no WAGs" - Wild-Ass-Guesses - please.:D

I think the music-syncing and delta updates(finally) are fantastic features though, so I really am looking forward to this.;)

Cheers!

Worked out perfectly for me as I was up for renewal on June 21st. Got my renewal letter a couple weeks ago, then got my e-mail about the transition to iCloud and the "free" 1 year of MobileMe on the 6th. :D

I hope they keep pumping out more Knowledge Base articles about the transition, because I still have a lot of questions, and none of the MobileMe support agents know anything more than I do.

I really want to know what is going to happen with iDisk. Its slow, but it works for backing up some important files. I'm also interested in what will happen with Galleries. I don't use that as much, but I use it occasionally and would hate to see it go.

Edit: I just want to add that what jonessodarally said right above this post is a huge issue for me as well, and something I've been concerned about. Apple really needs to publish some sort of solution to this, or a way to merge accounts.

Their kb's are abysmal. In fact it's a joke.

Losing galleries however is going to be a major, major problem if that happens. They're one of the easiest and best ways to share and store super high quality images in a streamline and gorgeous interface. I've set up several for friends'/relatives' weddings so that everyone there can upload and download pics/videos in HQ in one place. If they get rid of them I'm going to ****ing kill somebody.

I'm in the same boat. This is becoming so crap now for their motto of it just works. So far everything is just feeling like I'm being abandoned. So many friends and family friends of friends rely on this as well as some of my galleries.

Plus I'm getting sick of the 2nd time changing this service. First it was dot mac, then the transition to mobile me, now this iCloud crap that feels nothing but a downgrade so far.

iCloud is a totally separate service, and it doesn't offer several of the bigger MobileMe features, like 20GB of online storage, iDisk, Photo Galleries, or web hosting.

So they've done a runner... feels like the days of PPC getting dropped now with online services.

Yeah, I love iWeb... sadly no updates on the PPC version so I guess I'm really left with defunct hardware and software now. With defunct controls in the system preferences with a defunct service when this time comes.

Is there confirmation of this? I naturally assumed that I'd get to keep my .mac/me email addresses when the switch happens.

Why would anyone cancel their MobileMe account now, so close to the iCloud switchover? Surely they'll be losing their email address as a result?

Yes Apple have said that .mac and .me will be kept and will not change. New subscribers will more then likely get .icloud as will existing customers I suspect. Same as the switch to mobile me really.

Ah, very nice. Thank you.

Am I correct to assume it's quite reliable?

I love Dropbox. I started using it a while back when I started getting frustrated with the slowness of iDisk. I think the free account only comes with 2GB, but its pretty easy to earn more space (I have 6GB and pay nothing). Truly, Dropbox is what iDisk always should have been. The syncing between computers, both Mac & PC is excellent and very reliable. Even Steve mentioned it Monday in the Keynote, even if only to say that it won't be needed anymore with iCloud.

The only thing I'll miss with iDisk is just the knowledge that I do have 25GB of online storage, if I need it. Plus my Dad uses it to store a few important files and I really don't want to set him up with another service since he's finally starting to understand how me.com works.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I'd really hate to see iDisk and iWeb/hosting go away as well. But this hasn't been mentioned specifically yet right? Here's hoping they don't throw these 'bonus' features out the window. Perhaps an extra charge for them? Anything less than $99 a year would be saving me money.

This might shed some light on the issue for some people...

I originally got a .mac username when I got a Mac. I didn't do anything to renew it.
I then subscribed to MobileMe and got a .me email address. However, this has always been associated with my .mac username.
Recently I started to dislike my main .me email and created an alias .me address.

I've just installed iOS 5 on my iPhone 3Gs and my iPad 2.

I first did the iPhone and set it up as a new user in the hope of it activating my .mac email again. It didn't. It automatically setup my usual email accounts on the phone so I then continued to restore from back-up to get my apps in place etc.

With the iPad I just restored from back-up straight away since I knew the .mac thing wasn't going to activate again.

However, although my .me alias and main email are still working fine I haven't yet cancelled my subscription to MobileMe because when I try to activate email with iCloud in the settings it tries to get me to setup a new .me account. When I try to do this I get a server error. I assume since its still beta and new registrations are locked they must be working on the back-end. I suppose I will have to wait for their migration instructions before I can turn off MobileMe.

this is all very confusing for me

what happens to all my idisk data?

also does the new iCloud manage my PDF documents for me?

Excellent question. I rely on iDisk like you wouldn't believe. It is syncing my iTunes libraries (just the library file) between all my computers at the moment.

I want iCloud to give me an iDisk.

I got the email about getting a refund for the code already in place in my account. The problem I face is I have about 6-7 boxes of renewal codes I've bought over the year. I've bought so many Macs, sometimes I just forget I already have a few boxes of renewal codes. It didn't really matter unless with the latest development that Apple is discontinuing MobileMe.

While I trust that Apple has a tidy solution in mind for rolling MobileMe members into iCloud, it's very disappointing that more details of that transition are not currently available.

-What happens to people with both @mac and @me Apple IDs?

-What happens to iDisk files?

-What happens to iWeb sites?

-What happens to Photo Gallery?

Obviously Documents in the Cloud will replace iDisk and Photo Stream will replace the gallery, but these are not the same things. Storing a few select docs from select apps is no where near the same thing as iDisk. Will I even have my file sharing abilities? Probably not. Will there even be a public URL for PhotoStream, that I can share will my family and friends for the web gallery?

Aside from automatic backup, upload, download, which is great, so far I like Mobile Me a lot more.

come on, :apple:

I mean its great that iCloud is free, by why the *$%# can't there just be an iCloud Plus that costs $25 a year and let's you keep your iDisk & Photo Gallery & iWeb as part of the new iCloud?

Reading around the web, I'm finding thousands of people who literally rely on these services even heavier than I do (which is a lot), and the reason they pay for them is for the insurance that they won't just up and disappear.

Apple needs to do something better for MobileMe users or atleast a decent itunes card? I've had mobileme since it came out.

Besides- I'm not too frustrated since icloud is the same thing as mobileme until it rolls out. The only thing I'm not too happy about mobileme since it costed $100/year and there wasn't many features for it. I only used it to sync my address book, calendar, etc.

Well- We all know why Steve screamed at his mobileme team. This is like eWorld that closed down. ;)

I'll be interesting to see how Apple is going to manage this transition. Especially for those of us who have separate MobileMe accounts and Apple IDs (for iTunes Store, App Store, Online Store and so on)...

Agreed. me.com sounds generic and boring, whereas mac.com is simple and clean, yet instantly self-explanatory.

'me' also, I hate using it, and much prefer the mac.com. Sounds too narcissistic.

So I'll be losing 15 gigs of storage, but have a free service for syncing other stuff.

OK, I'll add on to my Dropbox storage, and end up using that for storage and sharing instead of the cloud.

You should be able to get refunds for those unused codes.

I purchased a MobileMe box and have not used the activation code inside. Can I get refund for it?
Yes. If you have an unused activation code from a MobileMe box, you can submit a refund request.
