If they released the iPad Mini 4 with the same screen as it currently has but even with an A10 processor at $199/£199, I'd buy one just to have around or travelling. I'd buy them as gifts as well. But I'm not paying big bucks for it.

The current iPod touch with A8 is still selling at $199....

It will be interesting to see what if anything changes with the mini. I tried to get in on the Black Friday mini 4 for $249 but couldn’t find one in stock. A new mini is on my list if it has the right specs and price. A mini 5 with 2018 9.7 specs for $299 or less and I’m in. The way Apple is going these days it would be no surprise if it’s a mini Pro for $599.

Don’t worry it will either be crippled in some way or priced out of this world.

I really like the 6th generation iPad. Compared to the 3rd generation iPad, it is noticeably lighter. However, if Apple had released an updated iPad mini this year, I would have probably gone for the mini. It is inexcusable that Apple has let so many of their products languish for so long without proper updates, which brings up the question if certain products are going to be killed off or if Apple is just being very lax about upgrading certain products.

Fortunately, the Mac mini and MacBook Air finally received updates, and the Mac Pro is scheduled for something in the future. Sadly, the iPhone SE has been killed off, and the last of the iPods hasn't been updated for years and may be next on the chopping block.

I’d gladly take a Mini Pro, but I doubt it’s happening. An 8.5” to 9.0” screen in a housing the size of the Mini 4!? Um, yes please.

The first leaked images just came in people!

Can't see anything out of the ordinary here? Can you elaborate for me? :p

I think Apple under estimates the potential with the mini and those who don’t alway favor the larger iPads. Portability in a smaller form factor is still key for the mini when you have those times you want just want ease of use with one hand. Hopefully Apple Pencil support would be a consideration as well.
Seriously, I don’t want an iPad mini because I can’t pay more than $400, I just like the smaller size

Now, that doesn’t mean charge $600 for the iPad mini, but don’t give it old **** just to say “we updated it, happy now?”

I mind things like Display Quality, Battery Capacity and GPU cores.
If they try to save money on that - which they will - I'm out anyways.

The only reason I agree partially, is because the 2018 9.7 iPad lacks the laminated display, for my cases, that is a ‘must have’ feature.

While I am excited about the prospect of an iPad Mini 5, making a version with a cheap screen means my next tablet is guaranteed to be Android.

Just goes to show you that it’s Apple killing iPad mini and not a lack of demand. Now they want to boost sales with it? But but the iPad mini is dead they said. There’s no market for it they say. Regardless have you ever seen such a mixed message? Oh and let’s make sure we cheapen the display all we can. This will further boost sales and quality.

What happened to delighting consumers with the best products it can make?

This also furthers the evidence that Apple’s attempt to limit its lineup to products with the highest ASP is not working well.

Apple has had a penchant recently for screwing up solid designs, so I am cautiously optimistic.

This is good news for customers, if true. It shows that basic market forces are still effective...where you spend your money speaks loudest. Dollar-for-dollar, feature-for-feature, the 2018 iPad is the best value in the iPad lineup (IMO).

An updated Mini and a new, appropriately priced 10" iPad will definitely generate some interest.

I agree, the 2018 iPad is probably the best value in the entire Apple ecosystem.

Apple could get back into the mainstream mobile computing market (iOS devices) if they offered:
  • new iPhone SE - $499
  • new basic iPad - $329, Apple Pencil 2 compatible
  • new iPad Mini - $249
These devices might have the new "edge to edge" design with Face ID and current gen chip-1 year, so A11. I wonder if the edges to edge design is actually cheaper to produce over the long run, since Face ID sensors may be cheaper than the Touch ID finger print scanner + home button....don't know.

For MacOS, Apple could get back into the mainstream market with two $999 offerings:
  • 12 in rMB 128 GB SSD
  • iMac 128 GB SSD
For the rMB, they are actually pretty close. The current $1299 base price includes 256GB storage, and Apple charges $200 going from 12GB to 256GB on the MBA......so, it might be doable.

For iMac, they could take the existing $1099 base model with 1080p display and simply refresh the internal specs and offer a base 128 GB SSD.....again, it might be doable.

A quick search indicates the iPad mini is 8 inches tall and about 5.3 inches wide. If it were all screen and 5.5 inches wide, that would translate to a 9.7-inch screen.

So iPad mini, 11-inch non-Pro iPad (though I don't know what they would cut from the Pro to achieve that), 11-inch Pro, 12.9-inch Pro.

That would be one helluva line up.

So Apple needs a lower price point. That's not news, that's obvious.
But why would I want to buy a "cheaper" version of a flagship device, just because the pricing is ridiculous beyond belief?

This will not sell at all ... I really hope Tim Cook leaves with a golden handshake.
His obsession with supply chain optimisation and high margins is just horrible.

By the way, shareholders will notice that as well. Regardless of all the nice talk about innovation in materials and new technologies. I would not be surprised to see AAPL touch $100.

I don't buy any current products anymore. I know it's irrelevant.
But the share price has moved and investors see that at least.
or maybe...some people prefer the size? i haven’t bought a 9.7”-11” ipad since 2012. been wanting an update for a while now.

I’ll replace my 1st gen IPP with a new mini day one, can’t beat that form factor.

That's not Apples problem.

By the way, I believe the App Store is slowly dying.

I know literally no-one who bought a paid app, maybe a really small In-App purchase.
I cannot recall wether Apple has bragged about the payouts to devs recently.

wait, what? have you not heard of pokemon go and fortnite?

I agree. This may sound "out there" but I think that Apple's product decisions over the past 18-24 months were part of an experiment to identify the "pain ceiling" for pricing. They kept raising the prices to see at what point would there be enough pushback to affect revenue and profit.

I think that they found out what those ceilings are and will adjust accordingly. I think it would be a good topic for another video along the lines of the "Apple Engineer talks about the 2015 Macbook". :)

Apple will price the new iPads out of the business. Just watch. Even for $329 the 2018 models are a steal for what you get. They'll introduce a 10 inch and phase out the others for $399. Then sales will STOP on these.

I was worried the cheap iPad would go the same way as the SE. I’m glad they are keeping them. To my mind these “cheap” devices to have lying about the house for general use and children are really important to staying in the ecosystem.

Apple is preparing to launch a new fifth-generation iPad mini in the first half of 2019, according to sources in the Apple supply chain cited by the China Times, followed by a new entry-level iPad in two versions.

The report, first spotted by Japanese blog Mac Otakara, claims that Apple is preparing to launch a low-priced so-called iPad mini 5 in the first half of next year in an attempt to halt a general decline in iPad sales, with mass production expected to start by the end of December.

Apple hasn't updated its smallest iPad since September 2015, but the device did receive a price cut in March 2017, with a 128GB capacity model costing $399.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed in October that Apple is working on a new version of the iPad mini with an upgraded processor and a lower-cost display panel, with the device being launched in 2018 or early next year.

Notably, Kuo's prediction came two months after DigiTimes said it did not believe Apple plans to introduce an updated iPad mini, and in fact has "no further plan" for the smaller tablet.

As for Apple's entry-level iPad, today's report claims that next year Apple will replace its sixth-generation 9.7-inch iPad with a similarly priced model that features a 10-inch display within a narrower frame.

Following strong sales of the 2017 model, Apple is said to be launching two low-priced versions of the iPad in 2019 to boost sales growth. A more exact timeframe for launch was not given beyond the "second half" of 2019. Apple's 9.7-inch iPad was last updated in March 2018 and in the same month the year before that.

Apple's 9.7-inch iPad is thicker, heavier, and has fewer features than iPad Pro models, but it does support Apple Pencil and is also Apple's most affordable tablet, starting at $329.

Today's report goes on to say Apple plans to reduce production costs of the two iPads by reducing the amount to LED procurement in Japan and switching to Korean-made LED displays.

How about a new iPod touch?

My kid has been playing with an old iPhone 5C, and the current iPod touch is old and way too similar to that old phone.
