How much longer you think this sticks around? Look for price increases on new entry iPad as well as the iPad mini as Apple also goes lower quality.
Considering the entry level iPad is their best seller and they made sure to refresh them this year even giving them their own event. There is absolutely no reason to expect the low end models which don’t use the latest technology to substantially increase in price

I keep seeing this idea of 'lower cost lcd' - and it makes me wonder about the state os screens today compared to what was available in September of 2015 (when I last bought an iPad mini).

I know Apple doesn't make OLED/LCDs but is that there way of foreshadowing that the new mini will have a worse screen than today's other mini tablets at a greater price? I might balk if Apple can't beat the resolution on a $40 Amazon tablet :)

The delay in the new mini has been Sir Jony working on his monolog about how only Apple could unapologetically redefine the "bent rectangle" to have a curvature that aesthetically follows a concentric flow across the iPad lineup.

We will probably get an iPad mini 5, 2 years too late with 3 year old hardware and low-cost display. Apple ask again why no one will buy it.
But we want an unbent iPad mini Pro with 6GB RAM/1TB SSD/USB-C and macOS App Icon to start macOS in iOS. Or better an iPhone XS Max with 4:3 Display, 6GB RAM/1TB SSD/USB-C and macOS App Icon to start macOS... Samsung DEX in a cool version

The first leaked images just came in people!

Even the original iPad don't think it had such a super thick bezels!! Can't be any more ugly!!

Yeah, but is it going to be extra bendy? My kids might come into contact with said iPad..

New low priced iPad Minis iPad 10 inch? Better get your orders in for the old ones while they are still available because the new "low" prices will probably be 20-30% more expensive.

Funny how Apple is always coming up with ways to reduce cost of components but you never hear about them reducing sale prices anymore. Margins, margins, margins...

Just goes to show you that it’s Apple killing iPad mini and not a lack of demand. Now they want to boost sales with it? But but the iPad mini is dead they said. There’s no market for it they say. Regardless have you ever seen such a mixed message? Oh and let’s make sure we cheapen the display all we can. This will further boost sales and quality.

What happened to delighting consumers with the best products it can make?

Your blood pressure might drop if you stopped believing every aspect of every rumor from unnamed sources is official Apple policy. You've convinced yourself that Tim Cook and Apple brass sat in a meeting and decided to produce a cheap, poor quality display, a silly thought that no one should take seriously. As one of the Apple execs said in response to the suggestion that Apple was building cell phones that wouldn't last so folks would have to buy them more often--"what moron would decide to attract and keep customers by building a product that angered customers by falling apart?" Ditto here. Do you really think Apple's strategy is to increase iPaD sales by making the centerpiece, the display, a cheap, poor quality one? See, you can relax.

People have been waiting for years for Apple to update the mini4. And now they are likely to release a mini5 with a crap display...

Apple really needs to evolve from non-laminated displays. I understand that Apple wants reduce costs (and increase profits). But in 2019, non-laminated displays are inexcusable. They were even inexcusable in 2018.

It is even a downgrade from the ipad air 2 which introduced the laminated display to ipad in 2014 (!), and even iphones which are laminated since 8 years ago with the iphone 4.
But of course tim figured out that they have some leftover screens and can charge customers for them in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Apple is preparing to launch a new fifth-generation iPad mini in the first half of 2019, according to sources in the Apple supply chain cited by the China Times, followed by a new entry-level iPad in two versions.

The report, first spotted by Japanese blog Mac Otakara, claims that Apple is preparing to launch a low-priced so-called iPad mini 5 in the first half of next year in an attempt to halt a general decline in iPad sales, with mass production expected to start by the end of December.

Apple hasn't updated its smallest iPad since September 2015, but the device did receive a price cut in March 2017, with a 128GB capacity model costing $399.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed in October that Apple is working on a new version of the iPad mini with an upgraded processor and a lower-cost display panel, with the device being launched in 2018 or early next year.

Notably, Kuo's prediction came two months after DigiTimes said it did not believe Apple plans to introduce an updated iPad mini, and in fact has "no further plan" for the smaller tablet.

As for Apple's entry-level iPad, today's report claims that next year Apple will replace its sixth-generation 9.7-inch iPad with a similarly priced model that features a 10-inch display within a narrower frame.

Following strong sales of the 2017 model, Apple is said to be launching two low-priced versions of the iPad in 2019 to boost sales growth. A more exact timeframe for launch was not given beyond the "second half" of 2019. Apple's 9.7-inch iPad was last updated in March 2018 and in the same month the year before that.

Apple's 9.7-inch iPad is thicker, heavier, and has fewer features than iPad Pro models, but it does support Apple Pencil and is also Apple's most affordable tablet, starting at $329.

Today's report goes on to say Apple plans to reduce production costs of the two iPads by reducing the amount to LED procurement in Japan and switching to Korean-made LED displays.

By the way, I believe the App Store is slowly dying.

I 100% agree with this.

Apple is completely dropping the ball on the App Store.

It should be actively working with devs of popular games and apps on other platforms to port them to iOS instead of working against them. Big developers have left the store in droves. Instead, Apple is promoting crapware containing in-app purchases that are aimed at fleecing customers.

Apps and games are being abandoned by developers and are not working on newer iOS devices, which is completely unacceptable.

Sure, there are still lots and lots of positive exceptions but they are being drowned out.

Apple is choosing short term gain over long term sustainability.

Sounds like a possible March event. iPad mini, iPad, iMac, possibly an early glimpse of Mac Pro. ( And iPhone Mini Too )

I think there is a few thing in common between iPad mini, iPad and iMac update, thinner Bezel. The design will be largely be the same, but just thinner bezel to keep the design from looking outdated.

How about $199 iPad mini and $299 iPad?
But knowing Apple you are likely getting +$100 on top of those pricing. Which I wouldn't mind if they have at least an A12 into it. ( I know I am asking a little too much :p but that is assumgin Xr and Xs not selling too well, and they have overflow of A12 orders sitting on.)

If you ask why aren't these scheduled for WWDC? Well I am expecting 2019 WWDC to be very packed. There should be a lot of redesign in features and function on iOS and macOS. Along with lots of internal changes and rewrite using Swift 5.
If they released the iPad Mini 4 with the same screen as it currently has but even with an A10 processor at $199/£199, I'd buy one just to have around or travelling. I'd buy them as gifts as well. But I'm not paying big bucks for it.

I believe that the holiday flood of 2018 iPads is 1) to get consumers to trade up from older models and 2) to expand the user base to sell services to. In this way, it is not dissimilar from an Amazon Kindle. In my case, I'm trading up 4 months early as my 'one off' Kindle HDX has no replacement of equivalent screen resolution, and is 'long in the tooth'. I couldn't say 'no' to $249 and being able to use a (clone) pencil. My two sisters have fairly old iPads, and research shows that the upgrade cycle on iPads is several years. I repeat my conclusion that this is all about growing the services sales markets, not units.

Heh, I still keep an ipad mini 1 around just so the kiddo can play all the 32bit apps that apple busted. That was pretty uncool of apple and absolutely their fault btw. Said it then, still say it. At least many of these older apps didn't have constant popup ads and prompts to buy 99 dollar bags of coins. Most apps are garbage now.

I think the new 10 inch will keep the same screen res as the 9.7. I just hope they add top speakers like the pros. I also think it will have thinner bezel like the 10.5. It will probably have the a11 or a12 processor and 4gb of ram.

What do you want Apple to do? Most apps are garbage because 80% of what people do is garbage,
and dressed up web apps are fine for that. There are some counter events in the pro realm: Adobe
is bringing a somewhat complete version of Photoshop to the app store. Ti's cas inspire is a
work of art, but I never use because it so much easier to use desktop version with a mouse.
Many productivity apps are limited by lack of a mouse/pointer and the kludgey file support.
