This would suit me quite well, personally. I only just a few months ago went from an SE to an 8, and while the 8 is a beautiful piece of hardware I'm still finding it a bit awkward in the hand.

Just fired up my SE (which I'm now using as a glorified iPod Touch) and man, it is SO much better of a fit in the hand. A small device with a better screen-to-device ratio would be just the thing for me.

Lmao! Oh snap. I did this with my work calculator and burst out laughing in the office. Now, I'm showing everyone. Please forgive me, but I didn't know about that.

I bet the iphone 5.42” will be the size of the iPhone 8 but all display. Not that small. I would love to have an updated iPhone in SE sized instead.
I think a 5.42” iPhone could be close in size to the SE, only a little bit bigger. Now, 4.7” would definitely fit in a SE sized body, maybe even 5” so like I said, only a little bit bigger with a 5.42” display and smaller than the iPhone 6-8.

I think the only real "improvement" in this year's iPhones will be the 3 lens camera system then?

No man, your proposal with the iPhone 8 chassis would be absolutely awesome!
Agree on both items!
[doublepost=1554237528][/doublepost]
I was going to buy this years model, but now I think I will wait until next year! I miss the SE size phone.
Rule of thumb => If you can wait, then wait

Can we still with this year for now, we haven't even got this years phones and your talking about 2020, rumours are the reason so many people get disappointed

No, the reason most people get disappointed is because they are disappointing releases

I like the idea of a smaller phone, we'll see what comes of this. I am definitely going from 6.5 to 5.8 in 2019 though.
If the 2019 XR has 4GB RAM & dual-camera lens as rumored, that's the one I'm going for
[doublepost=1554238121][/doublepost]
No Thanks. My current plan now is to hold onto my current XR until it literally won't turn on anymore. I'm tired of paying insanely high prices for phones. Life is about more than replacing crazy expensive gadgets every year. Remember when you had to fork out $100 for the Motorola Razor? And that was before data plans too.
Smart man / woman!

Nope, at least not with the info in this rumour.

Yep. I’d rather have a ProMotion LCD than an OLED, for a phone. I suspect it will be OLED though.

OTOH, for a TV, I’d rather have an OLED any day of the week.

My guess is 3D Touch is gone. I personally don’t think it’s very well implemented and have it off on our iPhones. It seems Apple has pretty much given up on it too and is now including feature parity on iOS with long press. Furthermore, developers ignore it.

Basically, it’s a feature that most (but not all) people don’t want and it adds cost and complexity, so it makes a lot of sense to kill it.
"I’d rather have a ProMotion LCD than an OLED, for a phone." => 100% this!
[doublepost=1554238428][/doublepost]
I would have hoped that Apple would start steering toward the more affordable side with more LED models. I have switched from an iPhone X to an Xr (my son needed a new device so I gave him my X) and I have not missed the OLED at all. But I will admit that I miss the smaller factor of the X. Xr is just a bit too large for me I think but it is still a great device.

I'll be a little dissapointed if Apple does not ship smaller LED (hence more affordable) devices as that probably means they did not learn the pricing lesson (like Tim Apple seemed to mention last year). Price is (IMO) the reason why Android is where it is.
Personally, I think Apple should do two things:

1. Drop OLED displays in favor of ProMotion LCD displays
2. Drop stainless steel in favor of aluminum

These will help bring down the prices of premium iPhones without sacrificing quality or user experience

Most people want lower pricing. Current pricing is ridiculous.

I'm currently in a moratorium on new Apple purchases. I'm holding the line until either prices drop, quality of hardware increases, or both. I have no problem paying a premium price but I want a premium experience for it. Apple is not a fashion brand it is a tech company. I don't care what the logo on the box is as long as the stuff in the box is top notch and functions smoothly. In my opinion Apple has been faltering on that stance and just using their logo as a crutch.

I bet the iphone 5.42” will be the size of the iPhone 8 but all display. Not that small. I would love to have an updated iPhone in SE sized instead.
According to my very rough calculation, 5.42" OLED-based iPhone would be about 2.4" wide and 5.3" tall. It should be smaller as my calculation is very conservative.

iPhone 8 measures 2.6" wide and 5.5" tall and iPhone SE measures 2.3" wide and 4.9".

So 5.4" iPhone would be a lot closer to SE than 8.

So you're suggesting they create yet another size for the iPhone? Nah. I don't think they'll go there. Having three OLED sizes is enough as it is.

No, what I am suggesting is that the 5.42 inch display is the perfect display size to fit inside of the iPhone 6 chassis.
They will keep offering 3 different sizes, just like they do now, the only difference is, instead of the "mid-range" iPhone being 6.1", now it's 5.42", and the high-end XI and XI Max, will be 6.06" and 6.61" respectively....

Now, of course, even *IF* I was suggesting that Apple should add a 4th variant of the next-gen iPhone, would that be a bad thing? If you don't like it, then you don't have to buy one.
Another iPhone variant, would have it's advantages. As of right now, Android phones are the undisputed leaders in the budget phone category(these are generally phones with smaller/low resolution screens, slower CPU's, less RAM, and lower build quality).
If Apple were to add a 4th iPhone variant, it could compete in that space with budget Androids. It would really just need to be an iPhone 8, but labeled as something else

I think what people were saying is that Apple isn’t going to make an iPhone with a 3.5”/4.0” display, which some find is the perfect size for being able to reach the entire diagonal of the screen with their thumb.

Those people like the SE and want an SE2 because Apple discontinued the SE and the A9 is getting pretty old at this point. What they’re going to get instead is apparently a slightly smaller version of the current X/XS. I’m not sure they’re going to be happy with a 5.4” display compared to the 3.5/4.0 they prefer.

No. There are literally hundreds (maybe thousands) of posts made by those claiming that Apple would never go "backwards" and release a phone that is smaller than the X/XS. In fact, many went on to say that Apple will never again produce a phone as small as the iPhone 8, let alone anything smaller.

If Apple does release this phone, it will invalidate all such claims.

I’m really not that sure that a slightly smaller version of the X/XS is going to satisfy someone who wants a 4.0” reach display, which they can easily operate one-handed.

You’re right that even smaller would be better, but if there’s a high-end no-compromise flagship iPhone at 5.4” I’ll line up for it on launch day. I think this will be enough to let go of the SE, then hope for smaller next time around. Nice to have hope again that things are moving that direction.

The iPhone 8 only had a 4.7” screen; those that were complaining about that being too large and refusing to buy it will have less than zero interest in one that’s 5.4”.

What I’ve always said to people who wanted an SE was not enough people want what they want. Most people simply want larger screens—especially those whose primary (or only) computer and/or internet access is a smartphone.

The market has spoken, and Jobs with his “3–1/2” is the perfect screen size” belief has been overruled by customers. It’s not just Apple; try finding a non-phablet Android phone.

If there were sufficient demand, one of the dozens/hundreds of Android manufacturers would be only too happy to fill it. But there’s not. Sucks for people that want that, but it is what it is.

btw just for the record, a large percentage of what’s posted on MR forums about what Apple is going to do in the future is invalid—most of it as of the date of post.

That 5.24 model will be great for those who want a smaller iPhone.

I'm curious regarding those weird sizes such as 6.06... Are we going some flexible route or something?

One word, “Digitimes”. Enough said ;)

Just because a phone is smaller than an X doesn’t make it an SE.

The rumoured Phone would be bigger than an SE but smaller than an 8. Remember, the X is both taller and wider than an 8.
5.42 inches. The SE had a 5.39” screen. The fact that they’re not just leaving their smallest phone at 5.8” and instead dropping it to 5.42” makes this obvious.
[doublepost=1554259153][/doublepost]
People that like the SE seem to like the 4.0” screen. They think the X/XS are huge and their thumbs can’t reach the 5.8” diagonal. Is 5.4” really that different from 5.8?

I’m really not that sure that a slightly smaller version of the X/XS is going to satisfy someone who wants a 4.0” reach display, which they can easily operate one-handed.
It’s only gonna help. If there’s a 5.42” available then they’ll be much more likely to upgrade.

All the people that kept complaining that the iPhone is too thick will finally get a thinner iPhone! Hope these two people are happy now (or was it three people in total? Anyone?)

It’ll be interesting to see the feature set of the rumored 5.42”... will it be the XR-equivalent and sell for $749? Or will the slightly defeatured model be the middle one again, with the 5.42 and 6.67” being at feature parity (except maybe for the three lens camera??). Or maybe they’ll all be high-end models, just three different sizes?

Personally I think it will be the same as this year, i.e. smallest and largest being the same—or at least mostly; not sure about that triple camera on the smallest. The middle model would again be the least expensive. Without LCD vs. OLED it’ll be interesting to see how they differentiate them. Maybe reverse charging, rear TrueDepth, 120 Hz screen, real 3D Touch, certain video modes, who knows really lol. Gotta wait for Ming-Chi Kuo I guess, much more reliable than DigiTimes.

hahaha, that's basically the only porn we had access to when I was a kid

OK, I'm obsessed ...

Apologies for the crudity of this CAD, but I took the iPhone 8 and iPhone SE dimensions, then scaled an iPhone X screen proportionally to 5.42" diagonally. Then I added a 4mm bezel and the same size notch as the iPhone X. This CAD is obviously in mm, I'm just labelling the screen sizes in inches because peoples familiarity with those sizes.

I did a little rounding up on the mockup, so please forgive any inconsistencies.

5.42" is not really that small or feel compact which isn't a lot of difference in terms of vertical length (4%) and horizontal length (2%) compared to iPhone 8 and a whole lot bulkier than a SE form factor.

5.1" is an adequate increase to qualify as a smaller phone without looking like a giant phone.
