I'm trying to picture what the size of a phone would be with a 5.42" display with modern bezels of the Xs and I'm completely unable to visualize it.

Anyone capable of doing a mock up with size comparison? I know asking a lot, but I think would be very beneficial :) any of our photoshop gurus around?

the real thing here is, will Apple double the processor performance again?? (it doubles it each 2 years, maybe that would be 2020)
this would mean speeds over the latest i9 at least in some tasks at a fraction of power

it's a 7% smaller size, just remove the case in a iPhone XS to think in the size

Hmmm hopefully 5.42 could be the Goldilocks size for phones. Might still be a tad larger than I would like but hopefully a bit easier in the hand than my current X which I find a tad too large for easy one handed use. Well with my sized hands anyway.

Did you not read the article? 5.42” would be the smallest phone yet made with the new X-design. The info in this rumor obviously gives the idea that Apple is interested in making a new phone that would serve the same purpose as the SE.
People that like the SE seem to like the 4.0” screen. They think the X/XS are huge and their thumbs can’t reach the 5.8” diagonal. Is 5.4” really that different from 5.8?

I’m really not that sure that a slightly smaller version of the X/XS is going to satisfy someone who wants a 4.0” reach display, which they can easily operate one-handed.

iPhones are too tall, and that's absurd, hard to handle and not too much help for text, is like 16:9 for desktop screens, if you need taller screen the wide goes crazy. no sense
movies are deciding size in devices, no sense!!

Picture it as an iPhone 6 with 0.25" less height. The width is virtually the same.

It's basically an iPhone 6 display with thin bezels and certainly not an iPhone SE.

Apple has been sucking lately and I don't see that changing in the near future. The next round of iPhones this year and next will be nothing more than another iteration of a 12 year-old idea. Competitors have much more compelling designs than Apple. Apple will continue to treat the Mac like a bastard stepchild by charging double and providing half the compute power of competing systems. iOS will not be improved in ways that matter to the majority of people.

I'm just so disillusioned.

the iPhone 6 display size was 4.7".

so, If I understand correctly, the phone itself will be iPhone 6 in size, just edge to edge? a little on big side still for SE wishers

But imho, that's more about the size i can manage. i'd have liked a little smaller, but given everyone elses massive devices (Even the regular sized S9 that I have now feels like a giant phone in my tiny hands)

So where are all the haters who for years now proclaimed that Apple will never again reduce the size of the iPhone?
I think what people were saying is that Apple isn’t going to make an iPhone with a 3.5”/4.0” display, which some find is the perfect size for being able to reach the entire diagonal of the screen with their thumb.

Those people like the SE and want an SE2 because Apple discontinued the SE and the A9 is getting pretty old at this point. What they’re going to get instead is apparently a slightly smaller version of the current X/XS. I’m not sure they’re going to be happy with a 5.4” display compared to the 3.5/4.0 they prefer.

LOVE the 5.42” iPhone news, but OLED? I certainly don’t want to spend a premium price for a small iPhone. Give me an affordable Liquid Retina display at 5.42” back at the $650 price point and i’m sold!

It's a shorter iPhone 6. Same width. This assumes it has the same bezel width as iPhone X.
  • 5.26" tall
  • 2.61" wide

iPhone 6:
  • 5.44" tall
  • 2.64" wide

might be interesting device depends on the price and featureset.

Apple probably still hasn’t decided between the Prototypes for 2019. Let alone what’s to be in 2020
In any case sounds to bland

I think for most people the goldilocks size is still going to remain the X/XS.

you like the design or screen size of the iphone 5? I like the design it was great, i think its probably their best one.

A combination.

I love a bigger screen than the 5 and a phone that has more “edge” to it. When I use my Xs Max one handed, the edge/corner that rests in your palm area slips quite a bit. A more angled edge would be great to anchor it better.

Well if this rumour is correct that size will no longer exist by 2020. I know I definitely don't want to go bigger so hopefully the 5.4 version isn't laking features. Then again I still may just keep my X longer than that anyway.

the size difference is so small I dont think Apple would do a 5.8 and a 5.4, this is crazy!!
Well, they are not going to do a 5.8" and 5.4" at the same time. It's going to be a 5.4" and 6.1" at the same time. Note that they currently are doing a 5.8" and a 6.1" at the same time.

I know people are going to roast me for reading this and commenting on it - but man, as someone who was a fan of the smaller iPhone, I'm so done with the pre-announcement hype. It feels as if half of Apple's value is centered around this **maybe new product in the future, next year, maybe!** hype and god it's exhausting.

Buy a phone if you want one - use it if you want to. Tech is still better right now than it's ever been. Enjoy your life.

Can we still with this year for now, we haven't even got this years phones and your talking about 2020, rumours are the reason so many people get disappointed
Apple's lack of innovation is what is getting so many people disappointed. The pipeline is so empty Apple is forced to start talking up new products 6 mos to 1 yr before they're available for release. It also has been hyping the least incremental improvement as a huge new advance in technology. Pitiful!
