Everybody focuses on the rumour about a smaller phone in 2020 and totally ignores what's rumoured to be coming out this year. If the people want a smaller phone, then why not just make it now. I guess they need to get a little more life and $ from the current versions before moving on to new (old?) things.

I think Apple faces a significant challenge getting the necessary sized battery into a smaller form factor, and that's the biggest holdup to a smaller phone of an SE size.

No Thanks. My current plan now is to hold onto my current XR until it literally won't turn on anymore. I'm tired of paying insanely high prices for phones. Life is about more than replacing crazy expensive gadgets every year. Remember when you had to fork out $100 for the Motorola Razor? And that was before data plans too.

Goodbye to Apple from me if new iPhones are oled only
where will you go?

+1 though youre a better person than me if you can actually follow through. I say that then end up lusting after the next best thing

After the AirPower debacle and the unicorn MacPro being a no-show, anytime I read "reportedly" or "possible" or "predicted" in a MacRumors article, I just don't believe it.
There's only so much snake oil you can advertise.

Explain. Isn't it the superior technology for displays? I saw a rumor in Asia that the Mac Pro external monitor will be an OLED display.

Professional graphic displays are all LCD. The iPad Pro is LCD. The upcoming 31.6" 6K monitor is LCD.

LCD has less color shift, more accurate colors, and no PWM. If you want a thinner display, pick OLED.

I would have hoped that Apple would start steering toward the more affordable side with more LED models. I have switched from an iPhone X to an Xr (my son needed a new device so I gave him my X) and I have not missed the OLED at all. But I will admit that I miss the smaller factor of the X. Xr is just a bit too large for me I think but it is still a great device.

I'll be a little dissapointed if Apple does not ship smaller LED (hence more affordable) devices as that probably means they did not learn the pricing lesson (like Tim Apple seemed to mention last year). Price is (IMO) the reason why Android is where it is.

Added to that, though more anecdotal, I find LCD screens easier on my eyes than OLED.

I don’t really want anything even 1mm larger than an SE. I want a headphone jack. I want squared edges. I want a rectangular display, free of notch. I want TouchID.

I have very little confidence they will make what I want again. I am happier with my decision to buy a second SE with every day that passes.

On the positive-ish side, if they make something smaller than the current range of dongle-bound soap bars, then that would be better than them not doing so, and likely the option I’d have to take once the SE is not supported at all (which I hope is as long as possible).
The S10e seems to be closest to your ideal phone judging by your requirements.

OLED prices will be the same as LCD or less by 2020. A large swath of Chinese OLED fabs came online last year and more will come this year. This will completely change the supply picture by 2020.

Nope, at least not with the info in this rumour.

Yep. I’d rather have a ProMotion LCD than an OLED, for a phone. I suspect it will be OLED though.

OTOH, for a TV, I’d rather have an OLED any day of the week.

My guess is 3D Touch is gone. I personally don’t think it’s very well implemented and have it off on our iPhones. It seems Apple has pretty much given up on it too and is now including feature parity on iOS with long press. Furthermore, developers ignore it.

Basically, it’s a feature that most (but not all) people don’t want and it adds cost and complexity, so it makes a lot of sense to kill it.
Did you not read the article? 5.42” would be the smallest phone yet made with the new X-design. The info in this rumor obviously gives the idea that Apple is interested in making a new phone that would serve the same purpose as the SE.

Just because a phone is smaller than an X doesn’t make it an SE.

The rumoured Phone would be bigger than an SE but smaller than an 8. Remember, the X is both taller and wider than an 8.

Just throwing my own armchair analysis at the potential size of the smaller 2020 phone:

A device at 135mm x 64.5mm with a 4.5mm bezel (SE) would give a 126mm x 55.5mm screen. Diagonally that would achieve a 137.68mm screen - or 5.42” to the imperial folks out there.

That’s a couple of mm shy of the iPhone 8 at 138.4mm x 67.3mm - So I guess even if we’re privileged enough to get a smaller phone, it’s not going to be the SE myth, but I guess I might have to live with it.

The countdown begins :-/

This would suit me quite well, personally. I only just a few months ago went from an SE to an 8, and while the 8 is a beautiful piece of hardware I'm still finding it a bit awkward in the hand.

Just fired up my SE (which I'm now using as a glorified iPod Touch) and man, it is SO much better of a fit in the hand. A small device with a better screen-to-device ratio would be just the thing for me.

Nope, Tesla has done it already (not that it matters). But it would be funny to see Elon's response if Apple came out with a SE X. Lol.

So where are all the haters who for years now proclaimed that Apple will never again reduce the size of the iPhone?

Dear Apple, take a break this year. Work on improving software and iPhone hardware for next year. Most of us will be fine with that.

These rumour do in fact help Apple in that it prevents a proportion of buyers out there from throwing in the towel and doing something else. It gives them something to be patient and wait for. The only reason I'm using a Samsung phone today is that Apple didn't give me an iPhone SE2… the phone that's rumoured to appear in 2020 in this article. Difference is, I can buy a Galaxy S10e today rather than wait 18+ months. I'm just waiting for the price to drop some and the 256GB models to become available in my region.

Did exactly that and for the same reasons a couple of weeks back. S10e was £500 (UK) from a Hong Kong company for 128gb, dual sim and Qualcomm processor version. I'm still adjusting to Android after 12 years on iOS but the phone is pretty great really. It's a shame Apple have been so reluctant to make a new smaller phone, everyone in my office wants one, no-one has bought the X/XS.

Yes, it would be considerably larger than an SE.

I am a diehard SE fan and I believe that even a size somewhere between the SE and 8 would be perfect.
Yes, that's fine, but the original post that led to most of this SE discussion was misleading some people into believing the mythical 5.42" iPhone would be similarly sized to the SE, but it won't be... unless it's not actually 5.42 inches.

It's possible Apple might do some kind of a 6 SE?
It seems like the perfect display size to fit into a iPhone 6/7/8(non-Plus) sized chassis, assuming they adopt XR-style camera/speaker combo, and remove the fingerprint reader.
That might sell really well for those who want a smaller phone. Hopefully it doesn't cost more than $600 though...

I love the 6s form factor, but it's defiantly getting dated (i.e., performance). Larger phones are a pain.

I really wish Apple would release an iPhone in the 6s form factor with updated components.

So you're suggesting they create yet another size for the iPhone? Nah. I don't think they'll go there. Having three OLED sizes is enough as it is.

Dont trust Digitimes on Supply Chain info. Ming is a much better source.

Not to mention all the Display are either from Korea or China, Digitimes would flare better if Display were from Taiwan.
