I know 2.0 and 3.0 are chipsets that’s why I used the word “traditional”. I wasn’t sure if the current USB Apple uses is USB-A or what.

I want them to go to USB-C as well, but don’t really mind Lightning to USB-C for now as long as they include those cables and adapters with products going forward. I assume next year’s iPhones will utilize USB-C... Maybe?

USB-A and USB-C are physical connectors. What everyone describes as simply USB is USB-A. The big barn shaped connector that printers use/used is USB-B.

USB 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc. can all be transported over any of the above.

Because USB C has no quality issues, am I right?!

Except that Lightning is a superior connector over USB-C, while also being smaller to boot.

Apparently, Apple saw fit to make their new laptops with USB-C as the only connector. Are you questioning Apple''s judgement? If USB-C is so inferior and has so many problems, why would Apple use it in laptops which cost much more than an iPhone? If USB-C is so inferior and has so many problems, why would Mac users even want it on their computers?

And yet when people complain about new Mac laptops having only USB-C connectors and nothing else, who comes to Apple's defense? The same people who trash USB-C on iPhones/iPads because USB-C is so inferior and has so many problems. Why is that?

I’m assuming you’re aware that the iPhone and Macs are different devices, right? Also, I’ll say that USB C has failed us everywhere. But making the move to C on phones, when it has proven to be a mistake on the Macs, is a mistake.

Edit: Oh look, I’m not the only ones negative about C.

Not really. I want USB-C on iPhones/iPads right now. It would make things so much easier. :(

It's been Years you can buy them on eBay for 3 bucks. I’m not sure I understand what the issue is...I’ve been using them without any problems, don’t care if they’re not certified.

Apple shouldn't have to "let" them do anything.
Apple isn't stopping anyone from making USBC to Lightning cables. All they are doing is allowing them to make their device with an Apple-owned technology and providing certification.

The technology isn't there yet.

Yeah. Guess what? It never is. Until "someone" does it and tech companies are pushed to innovate and improve wireless charging.

Well… Have you taken any physics classes? It could work, however, it is incredibly inefficient method of charging with current technology, not mentioning the effects it would have on the RF environment. Not having any connector on a device would make it much harder for developers as well, too.

Physic classes? Pretty basic, but guess you have not taken anything major either.
I have heard all that drama before, when a major change was due to take place (3.5mm jack removal, dvd drive removal, home button removal and many more) . Blah blah blah. Disaster! No one will buy it. It is doomed! Until is done and dusted. And then all the sudden is the best thing Apple have done. Life goes on.

Gee. We all know people are uncomfortable with changes. Nothing new here.

Except it’s not. There are more peripherals, and better ones, for lightning than for USB C. Unless you’re saying Apple would magically fix that?
Apple has massive inertia. Contactless
Payments were a thing for over a year before Apple Pay came to be. Now that we have Apple Pay you see both Apple and android logos as "accepted methods of payment" on kiosks.

I do believe if Apple put usb c on their iPhone and iPad lineup it would boost peripheral production and innovation almost magically.

I think the bigger impact is if people are averaging 60% efficiency with their wireless charging (not always a perfect alignment of the two coils and its lossy to begin with) and then you add in the fact that this type of charging puts more strain on the battery... Apple would seriously need to consider the environmental impact that millions of user would have if they all: wear out their phone batteries quicker, and charger their phones daily but have to use more power to do so.

that's just scratching the surface.. what about when you want to throw your phone in your car's cupholder and plug in a charging cable because sitting it on a mat would have it sliding around? Or god forbid you want to pick up your phone and use it while it's charging, try doing that with a qi coil. NEXT

I do agree that Lightning is superior, but only marginally. The number of USB-C devices I own is growing (MacBook, Switch, Pro Controllers etc). Being able to plug any device into the same cable is just beautiful. Lightning is not superior when I need to carry multiple cables with me and go under the desk and unplug the USB-C cable so I can plug in the USB-C to Lightning cable.
I've also yet to see any of the touted superiorities of the standard in practice. What are people doing in a day to day basis with their lightning cables that usb c can't handle?

You know what you're talking about. and that is a good point. at the end of the day USB C is superior and more capable. Also, being "universal" it would really help a lot of accessory makers (who have to make a special version of all of there products for apple)

I think one reason that Apple keeps it is because of their enigma. They've always had it; They were the company that would give you a microfibre cloth and white apple stickers. They were the company that had their own 30-pin connector. They were the company that wrote their own OSes only for their hardware and then got their own apps and appstore. They are trying their hardest to keep it that way, special, enigmatic.

Without that, what distinguishes them from all the other phone makers slapping USB C at the end of their phones? yeah the os, but they're grasping at straws when it comes to hardware, all smartphones are starting to blur, this is probably why face id is going across the board, the 8 is too much like a samsung with iOS and a lightning connector.

At the end of the day that's why they're keeping it that way, it's not about which connector is better.

There's nothing (aside from charging their iphone, ipad, and pencil LMAO)

You are talking about habits here. They do change. People are usually good at adopting to changes. With the iPhone X i never found myself in a situation where I had to use it while charging. Never! And I am moderate to heavy user. By the end of the day I will still have around 20% battery. Place my phone on a wireless charger before bed time and pick it in the morning. The only time I have ever plugged this phone to charge via wire was when I was on vacation. Just didn't want to take the charging mat with me.

Point is, battery can be further improved. Wireless charging can be further improved for this to work. And let's just be real for a second. This is the way it is going, like it or not. Wires are NOT the future and life could be better without them. And it will happen sooner then you think.

And while we wait for that to happen, Apple sorting out USB C Audio as a standard for example, iPhone users can have a worse experience. Great. Sign me up.

Woohoo! Many years after both have been released! Don't you just love proprietary stuff, letting the company decide when and who can make the cables. And this isn't about quality is it, because they didn't let *anyone* build these, regardless of quality.

So if you bough the "new" MacBook how did you even sync your iPhone? You needed a USB-C to normal USB adapter?

Better than the alternative, when you could buy the wrong USB C cable and screw up your phone and laptop.

I get that, however I'm on the other end of that spectrum. Everything I have except for my Apple Watch charges over Lightning. I have an Anker charger with 4 USB-A Power IQ ports and 1 USB-C PD port, and that literally covers anything I'd need to charge at home. Travel, I bring the two Apple wallwarts.

USB-C is fine for things as thick as a MacBook. On devices that are handled constantly, where you charge while still using the device, where space is a commodity and every milliamp hour counts, I want the smallest, most durable connector there is. USB-C (once all the non-standard trash is cleared out) is great for personal computers. Otherwise, your argument isn't valid.

I haven't plugged my iPhone to my Mac in ages. Everything is synced wirelessly these days.

That said, isn't it ironic that over the last decade, Apple has only had 2 charging ports? 30-pin and lightning, while the rest of the industry flitted from one standard to the next like a butterfly with ADHD.

We get good things in life because companies are able to innovate outside of the constraints of standards. We got lightning in the age of micro USB, which was a very good thing for consumers given how poor micro USB is as a connector. Apple users got to enjoy lightning for a whole 3 years before there was ever a device with a USB-C connector. If anything, it’s the standards that are stopping things being ‘great’ as USB-C has taken so long to get to market and has has compatibility problems along the way. Both of which have been worse for customers in comparison to what Apple has been doing.

I personally don't mind sticking with lightning until Apple is ready to remove the charging port from their iPhone altogether.

I like the Lightning connector too, that's not the problem. What bothers me is that until now only Apple was allowed to make these specific cables, which are super expensive, but aren't durable by any means. And for a long time after the release of their first USB-C MacBook, they didn't even make a USB-C to Lightning cable, but they banned others from making it. They sometimes behave like patent trolls, who sit on an idea, refuse to do anything with it, but sue people who try to do something with it. With their tight ecosystem, they have the power to force people to use any standard they like. They have a moral obligation to make that standard affordable and available to everyone, and to let 3rd parties use those to allow for some consumer choice. To force people to use a standard, then prevent people from using it through patents and legal tricks is the definition of corporate evilness.

I don't actually care about USB-C cables, I've never seen a USB-C port in my life. What I care about is how Apple is behaving more and more like an evil corporation rather than an open, modern, innovative one that lets people do things the way they want, rather than the way Apple wants them to.
