I hate it when I go into a shop for an iPad, and come out with a Samsung Galaxy Tab instead. Apple are so thoughtful by making sure I don't get the two mixed up anymore. Now I can return all five of my mistakingly bought Galaxy Tabs and get an iPad without fear of buying the wrong thing again.

You can have the same form factor (maybe because is the only valid) but different looks, see laptops for instance, all of the, have the same form factor but most of them looks different, right? So why Samsung can only make a tablet that is almost identically to the iPad?

And yes, the tab look a lot like an iPad, the first time I saw one in a mall I thought it was an IPad until I saw it more close and noticed the Samsung logo and the 16:9 screen, but I'm tech savvy, any regular Joe would think "look, the iPad thing everyone is talking about, let's buy one!"

Be honest, there are many people in the world (note that I don't say women as that would be sexist) who if you took the badge off a car would have no idea who made their car.
It's blue, and looks nice and cute and was affordable being the criteria that was used to buy it.

Patents are given, or rather should be given, for new and innovative creations. If you're not the first, and its not new, why should you be protected by patent laws?

Please point out who filed the patent before Apple did.

I'm an Aussie, and I'll say this: Our patenting system is screwed. In australia it doesn't matter who had the idea first. This IS the country where a guy managed to Patent the wheel. No kidding! Actually Patented the wheel!

Apple got a patent for a minimalistic tablet design, just a rectangle with screen in the middle, without the home button. It was deemed different enough for a patent. So they do hold a patent. But they should not, because its just minimal and not innovative. Again, let me repeat that patent laws are there to protect innovation and creativity. Nothing innovative, and creative, about a rectangle.

A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. That's the apple philosophy... But they didn't come up with that philosophy.

No, I'm pointing out something that isn't true. alex2792 said that Samsung "pretty much told the world that they're going to copy the iPad 2 after it was unveiled" and I see no evidence of that in the article posted. I'm not blindly defending anything.

But your defends is laughable. There have been cases where their products look 99% like Apple's, including their power adaptors, cables and product packaging + colors. Furthermore Samsung was one of Apples main sources for developing products and hence had insight in their technical aspects and how to manufacture them.

The facts are out there and in both cases the products, presentation and packaging looks very much like Apple does. People just hate Apple and what they do. They want cheaper products and knock offs.

I'm sorry... but the "slavish" copying doesn't seem so apparent in terms of 'look and feel.' I don't know what the patents were that caused the ban, but I think that 'look and feel' shouldn't be amoung them.

Implementing the post ranking system must be one of the worst decisions the mods have made. I can't imagine how many well rounded individuals making great contributions to the forums have been driven away by seeing the rampant fanboyism on this forum so clearly visualised.

I honestly have a vision of middle aged nerds hunched over their macs, just waiting for a sniff of anything vaguely anti-Apple. As soon as they find it, they must just go through a thread wholesale negging anything without regard for reason or logic.

Unfortunately, they aren't required to explain their viewpoint in words. A blessing, perhaps, as I'd imagine they can't articulate particularly well.

That is extreme. Like I said, I am on Apple's side when it comes to the iPhone/ iPad vs Galaxy (something), but there are other areas were Samsung are pioneers.

No one does LCDs like Samsung, everyone else replicated their technologies in that area. Also, their 4 door fridge is pure genuis, it is cheaper and has more function than my overpriced KitchenAid fridge. Samsung has several patents also in the washer / dryer area.

You have to understand that samsung is a group of mini companies, so yea, I don't support their phone business, but that does not make me boycott the whole brand, it's a bit extreme.
