Apple Wipes iTunes Pages on Facebook and Instagram, Begins Moving Away From iTunes Links

Question is: what will they do about iTunes backups? I'm really surprised everyone who's worried about apple killing iTunes only talks about the media store, but nobody ever talks about what's going to happen with iTunes backups.

Good news for iMazing sales

iTunes was always one of the worst, slowest, and most bloated programs ever created. On par with the original Realplayer if anyone is old enough to know that program.
Oh I really miss the good old days of real player. When we could stream content from any tv network or streaming service in any country without today's stupid geolocation restrictions.

Won’t miss iTunes for one second. I loved it though - about 15 years ago.
I will miss the ability to back up to a PC or Mac if we lose it altogether when iTunes is killed. How come no one is worried about that? having iCloud as the only option to backup and therefore having to pay lots of money for iCloud storage seems more worrisome to me than whatever happens with the media store.

Legacy use of iTunes will still continue beyond 10.15. Too many users will delay migration to separate programs, and just like when "iBooks" became a thing, you could delete the App and reclaim your books under iTunes for organization.
Don't worry about what Apple tries to do to macOS, plenty of work arounds will be created.
For those that welcome whatever 10.15 does to your music library files, my advice is to make all your music "read only" after you set it up so that you will not loose your meta-data. Make a backup and then see what happens.
About 2 years ago I lost a whole bunch of data organization due to iTunes crapping out. I learned then that I could not have iTunes copy my media and just "link" to it for the library file it creates. So, once I organized my restored media I made the files "ready only" so that iTunes could not change them. Not only has this saved me problems in the future, when I moved from Apple hardware to Hackintosh I was able to keep all my meta-data safe and import each portion without loss of my tweaks. A pain in the butt and lots of work to import; the end result was well worth it.
There are many ways to use iTunes or any media organizer/player. Apple really can not re-invent the wheel on how we keep our media and separating each part like in iOS will not really change the library you have set up. Curation is the user's responsibility.
Don't forget the iTunes BACKUPS. A lot of people, including myself, still prefer to back up to a computer for a myriad of reasons ranging from a slow internet connection to other technical reasons. I'm still bewildered at how everyone posting in this and other tech forums about iTunes being killed is only worried about what will happen to the store and their purchased media, and no one seems to care at all about losing the ability to backup to a computer. To me, losing the ability to back up to a computer and being forced to use iCloud as the only way to back up while also having to pay apple for storage is more worrisome than whatever happens with the iTunes Store and media. If we must back up to iCloud only, switching devices or doing a device restore is going to become extremely painful since internet connection speeds are for the most part still too slow to make a restore from an iCloud backup a viable option (It can take up to a week to download a backup from iCloud onto a new device vs just a few minutes using iTunes). Not to mention the insane amounts of money we'd have to spend in additional storage as the storage capacity of the devices grows over the years.

How i will back up to my mac, or DFU mode without itunes?!
That's exactly the same question I've been asking myself. And I'm surprised no one seems to be worried about that at all.

The name iTunes carries immense and iconic recognition for Apple. Even if they want to put books, tv, and music into different apps - they shouldn’t do away with the naming of iTunes altogether. Calling it “music” sounds so plain and generic.

“Apple TV” is just a verbal skeuomorphism. Why not call it simply Videos, congruent with everything else, eg Music, Podcasts, etc.

Maybe there will be a "lite version" of Apple configurator 2? And there are apps like the 3rd party app iMazing that duplicate the back up of iTunes and also offer some app management on the iPhone / iPad

I can't believe they will not have some app that offers back up and data archiving / syncronization between iOS devices - maybe bring back iSync?

We will probably know tomorrow - WWDC19 ?

Jumping late into the game is not an excuse, Apple has done it several time, in recent history with iPod, iPhone, iPad, AW, MacBook Air, Wireless EarPods, Home Pod, etc.

Granted some of these products are not hits, however it is just to demonstrate that being late does not mean a product has to fail.

I believe some versions of Windows support ARM and the compatibility will only increase with future software catalogue.

Just got to wait and see how things play out.
I wonder when they’ll kill OS support for intel macs. I just bought a new

You really except Apple to get every single approval based on IP address from Facebook ? "someone" liked you.. there is no relationship from an individual.

If you seriously think Facebook doesn't keep records of who liked what you are naive. That dones't really address my point, anyway. The fact is those likes were given to one page, and Apple is being allowed to move them in bulk to another page, creating an illusion a bunch of people approve of something they do not. As a matter of truthful representation this should not be allowed. If Apple's second page is such a great idea they should be able to earn the likes from the public for it instead of fudging their own numbers.

I couldn’t imagine a better metaphor than iTunes, to showcase the dramatic rise and fall of a once great company.
iTunes changed the world.
Apple changed the world.

Now they are both sad memes of themselves. The Charlie Sheen and Johnny Depp of tech if you will.

Really? They're that terrible? Then why are you here?

Considering the iPad Pro is being aligned as a computer and has quite a bit to get there, intel support will start being phased out starting in 2025 onwards. Pretty safe for now. macOS has matured, time to cross populate features and function between iOS which has been happening for awhile.

Really? They're that terrible? Then why are you here?

To participate in a discussion about iTunes, one of the most important advancements in tech and the music business during the last twenty years.

Given that your post has nothing to with technology nor computers at all, the real question is in fact, Why are YOU here?

Shouldn’t you be tending to someone’s broken butterfly keyboard at the Genius Bar?

I seriously cannot understand all the complaints about iTunes. Unless I'm really under utilizing it, it works perfect for music, as a matter of fact, it's playing my music right at the moment. The album view is great, my music is sorted by genre and artist too, so I can quickly find the song I'm looking for. Lyrics work great as well. I also do use it to sync music to my iPod(s) and that also works flawlessly, so that's not it either. Maybe you guys are shopping through it and that doesn't work as it should?

If somebody could quickly summarize what they don't like about it, I'd greatly appreciate it. I hope the next app is, well largely the same... because I cannot find anything so wrong about it that it desperately needs a replacement and all the hate it gets. I just hope Apple doesn't dumb it down and messes up our neatly crafted music libraries.

(and yes, I'm running the latest version of iTunes, so it's not some old but great version of it which people can't let go)

It's so sluggish to do anything.

Updated FAQ incoming:
Where is my music? In Music. That's where you can play music from Apple Music, which you may subscribe to. But your music that isn't in Apple Music can be played in Music, so you can still access your music in Music without subscribing to Apple Music.

There are many reasons I think sunsetting iTunes is a bad idea, though I acknowledge I may be in the [largish] minority on that. One reason, however, will be the complete crapshoot of online search results for the inevitable problems that require troubleshooting.

Generic names like Music, Photos and TV (etc.) will make it that much harder to find support articles for upcoming software problems. At least with names such as iTunes, GarageBand, or iPhoto, you could clue in on pertinent material much easier.

It's attention to the little details like these that really separates the great from the merely okay.

Good point there iThink

I still don't understand the hate for iTunes. It does its job really well. People say it's bloated but it's among the fastest apps on my Mac.

I'm going to miss it terribly once the day comes that I can't run it anymore. (Which will be when I get an iOS device that needs a new version of Music or whatever, I bet)

I’m sure the new software will be sleeker and more refined, with less clutter.

Translation: Control iconography will be difficult to understand and needlessly moved to another location. Functionality will be obfuscated or removed entirely. Siri on Mac still won't know how to handle it all properly. Your Library will vanish.

“Apple TV” is just a verbal skeuomorphism. Why not call it simply Videos, congruent with everything else, eg Music, Podcasts, etc.
Actually, there used to be an app called Videos until iOS 10.1; Starting in iOS 10.2, apple revamped the app and decided to rename it TV and now Apple TV, so them returning to the previous app name is highly unlikely.

If you read the multiple articles that have been posted about this, that's been addressed. It's in the Music app.
Is the ability to backup there too? I haven't seen anything about it. Everyone's too worried about music and movies and don't seem to be worried about possibly being forced to use iCloud to back up, and thereby paying lots of money monthly to greedy Apple.

Of those you listed, only one came late into the market. The others were not even remotely as late as the Zune was

Just because they don’t pull it, doesn’t mean it’s not a failure. How long did it take for them to pull the Apple Airport?
