You're missing the point. Apple set these appointments up simply as a courtesy because they know it will be a big crowd of customers swarming the stores to buy one. They appointments are only 15 minutes. Have you ever worked in retail? Customers take much longer than necessary. Allowing them to switch bands will slow everything down and other customers will get pissed. Some control has to take place.

So what happens when a customer inevitably can't decide between three different bands? According to the post on 9to5Mac a few hours ago, you get to choose two watch models to try on. If someone goes into the store wanting to see how the link bracelet, milanese loop, and leather loop look on them to determine which one they want to buy, they're forced to forget about one of them. This is acceptable marketing for a company like Apple?

----------

What combination is Apple not offering that you need to try on to know if you want it?

Personally, I'd like to see how the Space Black Stainless Steel watch looks with black and white sport bands.

People are making such a big deal over all the "problems" with the selling process based on things that they will only do for the launch.

All of this stuff they are doing makes sense, you are going to have millions of people flooding in to stores that are already over crowded so they can all spend 2 hours trying on every different combination? No, that would be a complete cluster.

I have no doubt in my mind in a few months once things settle down you can go in and try on everything to your hearts content, but for a person like me who knows what I want, I just want to know how it fits, I don't really like the idea of somebody in front of me trying on their 20th combination just "cause"

The trying on starting on the 10th are for people that have an idea of what they want and just want to try it on for size.

How many people will actually want a mismatched watch and band? Who's going to spend $450 on a stainless steel bracelet and pair it with an aluminum watch? I think there's going to be A LOT fewer customers wanting a model that Apple isn't offering. And I think these mismatched combinations are going to look a lot worse than people think. There's a reason Apple chose the models they did.

And yet Apple sells the gold watch with a plastic band.

As if people needed more reasons to wait for the Apple Watch 2....
I will be waiting in the hopes V.2 or V.3 will be waterproof. I want this watch for swimming and surfing. So for now this is a no go for me but I am curious to see what is this whole thing all about it.

Right, because you are the sales expert number one.

Because Apple Store employees not having enough time for all costumers that marked an appointment wouldn't be a problem.

Now people more than 15 minutes deciding between two watches that look identical... that will kill Apple!

Yeah, because it takes, what, 10 seconds to swap bands? I never claimed to be a sales expert; I just said that it hurts the customer experience.

This seems like a royal cluster**** waiting to happen.

lol, one man's avoiding a cluster**** is another man's cluster**** I guess.

While there may end up a couple people doubled over in agony because they can't pull the watches apart, I'm guessing the vast majority will go about happily trying on some watches.

Then THAT customer should wait until after the initial launch craze has ended because after all that customer needs more personalized time right? So they are obviously not in a rush. That's exactly what I would do. If I'm interested in something new that I consider a special purchase I would wait until the initial crowds die down so I can go into the store without needing an appointment so I can take my time.

dumb move.... if apple wants me to buy their over-priced bands i'm going to want see if it looks good. mixyourwatch.com only works so well :p

Do you honestly think a sales associate is going to say 'no' if someone asks to see a third combination? And isn't it possible that Apple will be adjusting these guidelines as they go based on employee and customer feedback? They have to start somewhere. But I doubt these guidelines are going to be as rigid as some here are making them out to be.

Personally, I'd like to see how the Space Black Stainless Steel watch looks with black and white sport bands.
Ok. Well at least you provided an example. But I honestly think Apple created models in each collection to try and have a manageable number of SKU's and I think allowing customers to try on those models is more about managing the process as smoothly as they can. I'm sure once the initial rush has died down these rules will be relaxed.

"...unless you're Kanye or Kim."

Kanye: I'd like to buy a half-dozen of these Edition watches for me and my friends, but I'd like to try them first with a sport band.

Tim Cook: Sorry, Kanye. I don't care how famous you are or how much money you want to spend. Rules are rules. Here at Apple, we strive to treat every customer the same. :D

Wait so you think the bands are overpriced but think it's a dumb move for Apple not to offer something that could result in selling more overpriced bands?

----------

If you think the bands are overpriced it doesn't sound like you would buying one anyway.

Apple may not be offering this is because they're not selling the watch and bands separately. They're selling pre-determined models in each collection. If they let people try on any combination they want people will think they can buy that combination and will be confused when they're told the band they just tried on has to be purchased seperately.

I'm sorry, but if I'm going to drop $549+ on a watch, I will do what I want within the 15 minutes time. And that 15 min does not include checkout either.

Heck, when the iPhone gets released, I never was "rushed". Be it the first iPhone or current.

Apple has a 15 day money back return policy, I don't see the issue with buying a few of the bands, trying them out, and returning them if you don't like it.

I'm 6ft 9in and 420lbs on a good day, I measured a piece of paper that went around my wrist, it was just over 200cm, so I will definitely need to try them on.

Looking at getting one with the leather magnet loop, a sport band, and maybe a link bracelet if it fits well.

So you have a right to do whatever you want on somebody else's property? Since when?

It's taken humanity hundreds of years to come out with a magnetic watch band. If this product fails, at least we will have watch bands that actually fit our wrists instead of having a watchband that's in-between a link or buckle hole.

What time on April 10 will I be able to preorder apple watch I want blue sport edition 42 mm with apple care and I live in east coast they will ship my apple watch to my dads own office he has

What do you want that Apple is not offering? It seems to me most of these comments are just a knee-jerk reaction to the rumor that Apple won't allow something. And if you're so concerned about price gouging get the cheapest Sport or SS watch and wait for third party bands.

Not at all. If I buy something, especially if it’s overpriced, I want to be able to specify it as I like even if that’s in a way that the manufacturer doesn’t intend.

For example, what’s increasingly annoyed me over the years is that I cannot ever seem to specify a car as I like. I have to order a new one every 3-4 years depending on mileage.
So you pick your colour, then your engine, start your interior choices and suddenly it’s ‘You can’t pick that colour combination with those seats’.
I don’t care if the manufacturer thinks it won’t look good. I’m spending the money.

This is what it sounds like Apple are doing?

.
It's not dumb on principle, it's just that most people won't know about this 'policy' and ask to try another color. Then the 'genius' or 'stylist' or whatever they are called will say no. And then the customer will be upset, especially if there is 10min left in their appt period.

So, poor minimum wage Apple employee slaves that have to touch people's disgusting arms and then get yelled at.

lol

I had this same idea a couple years back when the iPhone 4 came out so apple made there own watch that connect to smartphone

Marketing the watch as their most personal thing ever and then not allowing people to try on different colours seems weird.

What exactly does one talk about during the 15 minutes "experience"?

I guess Apple finalize realize customer service is pointless. A company as great as Apple, not only should Apple be telling people what to do, how to use it and what position to hold your phone, it should also not let you try it out before you buy (at least not if you want to try different bands you are potentially want to buy).

I mean, who try on stuff before they buy? I never use change rooms when i buy clothes.

Last thing, I'm very happy to see that it will take minimal 15 minutes to swap out a band according to the issue with not enough time to swap that during appointment. I was fully expect to spend 3-4 hours doing that. This shows Apple is moving to the right direction. Can you swap your Macbook's battery within 15 minutes? NO. then STOP COMPLAINING
