Apple was never going to bid on the NFL streaming rights. Apple has already made it clear it will not pay ridiculous amounts of money for sports programming. This is why the Apple streaming service still hasn't launched. Disney won't give Apple the ABC and Disney channels unless Apple puts ESPN in its lowest plan, making everyone pay for it. This is why you can't buy a Sling TV streaming plan without ESPN.

TNF is the worst out of all the primetime games. It's been like that for a few seasons. Just because the games have been divisional or really close divisional games doesn't mean anything. Idk why TNF is just horrendous?

Good. Thursday Night Football sucks anyways. The players are still recovering from playing on Sunday and not at their peak.
Exactly what I was gonna comment . Nfl is putting all this effort into a horrible product. Tnf is so bad

Why is the NFL selling the rights at all?
Why don't they just sell the TNF games stream, ala carte or in a package, in the NFL app?

So beating up women repeatedly and bragging about it is merely politically incorrect. But condemning the man for beating up women and bragging about it is racism which is even worse. Got you.

No, songs like "F" the Police are politically incorrect. And that was part of the other poster's critique (if you can even call it that). I don't condone domestic violence, I don't condone racism, and I've never called anyone a racist in my life. I can though acknowledge that art can be produced by people who make mistakes, bad people, even monsters, and still be art. I'll Godwin the thread right here, Hitler was a painter, he wasn't very good (as a painter, I shouldn't have to add commentary about what sort of person he was) but his paintings are still art.

Regardless of what Dre did or didn't do as a person he has had a major impact on an industry and an art form and has produced some stand out examples within his genre. You can condemn the man all you like for his actions, I won't stop you and don't even know enough about his history to confirm or deny, but the other poster was blanket dismissing all of his creations as not being art, that's just untrue.

NFL doesn't have the infrastructure to stream their content on their own. It's in everyone's best interest to have a partner deliver the NFL's content. That being said, streaming is the way to go with this - it enables the product to be sold on multiple platforms, possibly even by multiple providers. No longer needing a cable or satellite subscription to watch NFL would be a great change.

I'm a sports fan and a cord cutter. I absolutely want to see live sports streaming become commonplace. I also see the shift to streaming as a rare opportunity to break up this entrenched business model of bundling though. I don't want to see it cross over and need to subscribe to ESPN classic, Teen Disney, and ESPN "the ocho" 8 just to get access to Monday Night football on my Apple TV. I won't get my way, there will be multiple parties bidding on this and the old model will prevail but they don't need an exclusive streaming deal in order to provide streaming services in a B2C model. MLB is actually really on top of the streaming process and provides streaming services to other leagues. All the NFL needs is something akin to cloud services for streaming (well not "akin to" literally). They could do that on a consumption model and then sell the heck out of it direct to consumers across all platforms. That's what I'd like to see (but won't).

Nothing by Dre.

At least you didn't "Forgot about Dre" [sic]

With a response like that I don't expect you to open your mind or be in any way influenced by anything I'll say but factually you are incorrect. By definition (go look it up) music written/produced/performed-by Dr. Dre is art. Sorry.

Happily, I have a mind of my own, and that mind concludes that Dre has not made any art.

I value my opinion much more than yours.

The post you replied to was "So condemning the actions of a man who severely beat up several of his girlfriends and who also wrote plentiful lyrics glorifying the murder of prostitutes and the murder of police is racist?"

You dismissed his as being politically incorrect like so many other artists. He is not politically incorrect, he is the worst form of scum on the planet. And Apple glorifying him, his past, and making him a billionaire buts Apple in the same category as he is.

And it is not just domestic violence. That's bad enough, but he also beat up a female reporter for disagreeing with him. It was a severe beating. And he was bragging about it minutes later. You say you don't even know enough about his history to confirm or deny. Yet you post here in his defence. Why don't you take a few minutes to read about the piece of human garbage you are defending? It will leave you stunned that Apple wants to get into bed with the man.

Since you Godwin'd the thread, Hitler was a brilliant leader as well, he had the charisma to unite a severely fragmented Germany after Versailles, and his financial policies brought Germany out of the depression when the Ally countries were too afraid to spend on defence because their economies were so bad. But nobody acknowledges any of that, and they shouldn't. The man was such evil that all the good he may have done, should rightfully be ignored, he doesn't deserve to be remembered as a anything but the monster he was.

And Dre is an evil person who should be blackballed by the entertainment industry. He deserves to be dismissed as an evil and hateful little man and not be acknowledged for any good he may have done.

The fact that people say it's racist to have that opinion is just offensive. It has nothing to do with his skin color and everything to do with the evil inside him.

But Eddy Cue is a master negotiator and deal maker!

Hard to explain it for sure. Maybe Cue became bitter towards the NFL having to endure so many tease or absolutely embarrasing Dolphin teams growing up in 80's Miami. And, of course, TC grew up in Alabama where "real" football is SEC not NFL. :D

No. It's not that Apple won't pay for sports program as a genre, it's that ESPN charges cable companies $8-10 per viewer and Disney will not unbundle that channel. If ESPN was the .61 per viewer that CNN gets it would be a different story. The reason why Disney insists ESPN be bundled is because that is it's cable money maker by far.

None of that has anything to do with a stand-alone Thursday Night Football deal. You also go too far in suggesting Apple would charge for it. When Verizon had the rights it was "free" for every VWZ and Verizon FIOS customer, not an a la carte charge. It was a loss leader.

It will prove to have been a waste of time. Football every night of the week is going to kill interest.

Kill interest? Last season TNF averaged 17m viewers and won the ratings for the night. What exactly are you referring to? BTW football is the only major league sport in the U.S. that doesn't have a daily schedule during the season. Fans get far less opportunity to watch it than any other pro sport.

They (the NFL) loose so much money if you really think about it because if they streamed apps on all devices (Apple TV 4, FireTV, Nvidia, etc.) being just the team they want to follow and the NFL or NFL Teams would make Millions upon millions of US Dollars! Now with the NFL playing in the UK maybe offering a goof Streaming sites app and they would be in Heaven!

Awful lot of money for a game where the ball isn't even in play most of the time.

As someone born and raised in England on football [soccer] - which is by far my favourite sport. The fact that you don't have to be glued non-stop to the TV with NFL is one of it's strengths as a TV sport for me. Friends, beer, food & NFL makes for a nice evening. You can talk to people between plays.

Apparently the NFL wouldn't accept Tim's generous offer of iTunes cards as adequate compensation for the rights.

I wonder if it was because they didn't want to deal with selling advertising. Not that they couldn't outsource that part.
My thoughts entirely, to bid on NFL is to bid on hours of advertising. The streaming audience is all about not wanting to waste our lives on advertising. It's the model that brought success to Netflix, and Amazon, Then Hulu, and now even YouTube are following suit. For the cost of NFL and its limited gllobal appeal it would be a huge risk.

Strange, isn't it? For some reason, Apple acts like a publicly traded company instead of a charity. Can't figure out why, for the life of me.

Welcome to Macrumors. The large billion-dollar company out to make money: bad. A small mom and pop shop wanting to make money: good.

People expect large corporations to turn into charities when they get rich, even though wanting to make money is how they got rich in the first place.
