Apple is developing 11.1-inch and 13-inch OLED iPad Pro models that will come out in the first quarter of 2024, display analyst Ross Young today confirmed to MacRumors.

Young has previously mentioned new OLED iPad Pro models planned for 2024, but this is the first time that we've heard about updated 11.1 and 13-inch display sizes. With larger 11.1 and 13-inch screen sizes planned for the OLED iPad Pro models, we could see slimmed down bezels rather than an overall change in the size of the device.

At the current time, Apple sells a 12.9-inch mini-LED iPad Pro and an 11-inch iPad Pro with a traditional LCD display, as mini-LED has continued to be reserved for the higher-end iPad Pro model. With the 2024 update, Apple could return to feature parity between the two iPad Pro models.

Apple refreshed the 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models in October 2022, adding the M2 chip, so it would not be a surprise not to see another update until 2024. It is not yet clear if there is an intermediate update coming ahead of the transition to OLED, but Apple does not have plans to release a mini-LED 11-inch iPad Pro, and will instead move directly to OLED for the smaller tablet.

Other sources like The Elec and DigiTimes have confirmed that Apple is developing OLED panels for larger devices like iPads and MacBook models, and the technology is expected to be ready in 2024.

Young previously said that Apple would introduce a 14.1-inch iPad Pro in 2023, but he walked that back today and said that such a device is no longer in the works. That said, larger iPads are still a future possibility, as The Information believes Apple is designing a 16-inch iPad and Bloomberg has confirmed Apple's interest in bigger iPads.

The current iPad Pro/Macbook Pro 14/16 display:
SDR brightness: 600 nits max (typical)
XDR brightness: 1,000 nits max full screen, 1,600 nits peak (HDR content only)

Macbook Air M2 display:
500 nits brightness

Oled is a absolutely upgrade for current Macbook Air, is easy to have 500 mites brightness and better display quality. But the question is would Oled be a upgrade for Mini-led display?

I will definitly buy a new Oled Macbook Air but doubt about having a new iPad Pro or Macbook Pro. It seems unlikely to have 1,000 nits or 1600 nites peak brightness.

I think the Apple's sales strategy is applying the OLED on low-end product and keep the Mini-LED for high-end product.

I’d love this but also a little worried about burn in here. Phones are fine as you rarely have the same app open for long periods. There is a lot of switching.
But iPads, especially for power users will have the same few apps open for long periods of time. Should be interesting to see how Apple have dealt with this.

It is for text contrast, for example reading in the dark, and similar fine-grained structures. It’s why I’m not interested in Mini-LED and am currently using a Samsung OLED tablet for reading instead.

An OLED iPad will likely be an instant buy for me (if only new hardware releases wouldn’t come with a buggy x.0 OS).

That's one way to get a prediction right. Make a rumor and be sure to cover every size: 11.x", 12.x", 13.x", 14.x"

I haven’t had burn-in issues with Samsung OLED tablets so far.

After Dark for iPadOS? 😅

Too many iPad models and sizes. Just pick one size for all devices across different models. Then let us use our cases, etc. for any of them.

Think this is more about when apple will release than developing. The ‘developing’ is apple working on getting margins as much as possible for themselves.

It will not get as bright, but you will also not have any of the backlight blooming we see now since OLED is self-emissive (so no backlights).

And depending on the OLED tech, they could hit higher nit levels even if not as high as Mini-LED.
