Umm I’m taking about 1 device that depending on how it folds it switches from macOS to iPad OS 🤷‍♂️. Why own 2 devices when 1 device can do both….
That would require a whole new OS. It’s not that realistic to dual boot two OS simultaneously and quickly switch between them since apps and files will have to sync, among a host of other issues.

I hope it differs design wise from standard MacBooks, otherwise…

Please, show me a foldable device that doesn't have a big, ugly, distorted line running down the middle of it. Every single "folding" device I've seen has looked terrible. Just scrolling through a web page is irritating, but trying to watch a movie or actually design something with a wavy line running down the middle of your screen is ridiculous.

Maybe there are some out there that don't have any distortion along the folding line, but I haven't seen any (and I've seen a lot). I'd need more hands to count how many of my friends with floppy Samsung devices have migrated to iPhone.

I think this is just a bogus rumor.

OK, where is the keyboard and trackpad that is REQUIRED for any kind of high quality macOS input on a device like that?
Well technically speaking the display can have touch capabilities with haptic feedback. So it’s the same keyboard as on iOS. I guess if you want a trackpad then you can have the trackpad section down just like on a regular MacBook. 🤷‍♂️ So it’s not physical, just represented on the touch display.

Did you even read the thread? Or any thread about any rumored foldable device? 90% of people are against Apple doing anything in this space.
In this space 90% of the people are against iPads in general for productivity. Only shows that people here are biased or not the target.

There is a new breed of users that do the majority of input on touch devices. Phones, iPads etc. They will be happy.

What should we call the cracked and broken fold before it happens? FoldGate? CrackGate? HingeGate? BendGate?

Really hope this happens - I've always wanted a MacBook with a giant touchscreen where the keyboard is (along with really good haptics so that when you need a keyboard, it feels great - just like the trackpad does). I guess this rumour is basically the same except the whole bottom surface is a touchscreen. If they pull it off, it'll be awesome.

Apple is planting these rumors in the supply chain to get users anxious and hold off on purchase of competitive devices like the following. Just like the Galaxy fold, Apple is feeling threatened because competitors are starting to create unique and interesting devices. They are no perfect, but they have come a far way. Just like when Samsung introduced the Phablet with the Note and Apple ended following with the 6 Plus.

I hate to be one of those people who just says "I don't understand this" but I really don't understand this.
If it works like what I have in my head, I would *love* a device like this. Imagine something that works like a MacBook, complete with virtual keyboard and trackpad on the bottom (Apple does haptic feedback really well, so they probably could make a very convincing virtual keyboard). When you get to your destination, you unfold it and suddenly have a screen nearly as big as an iMac screen that would work with the external keyboard of your choice. This could be the ultimate travel computer.

Too complicated. Why would one want to go from the much more open MacOS, to locked down iPadOS on the same device?
Unfortunately it doesn't practically make any sense, even though I bring the idea up all the time. In theory it would be nice if you basically had a 'skin' for macOS that made it look and act very similarly to iPadOS in its tablet mode, but in reality it would end up being disjointed, messy and likely confusing for many users who would have to essentially know how to use two different OSes on the same device and context-switch between them depending on the situation.
