hmmz

Useless until itunes supports 4K streaming. It already costs more for 1080p.

... and in other news Samsung president says that they are also working on their Galaxy "S-TV", a total redesign of their current smart TV offering, which will be introduced shortly after Apple releases their smart TV... Google, not to be out done, claims that they too are working on a 4K smart TV ....

If this launches and actually finds a market (by way of fair pricing), then I suppose we can all guess all the other manufacturers next move.

All "other manufacturers" already made this move. Now, if Apple decides to release a TV set (4K or a regular HD) it will be following Sony, Samsung etc.

More importantly, there is absolutely no content for such screens yet and there is no plans for delivering it. Sure, some (like in case of JVC projectors) claim that the regular HD picture still looks better on 4K screen because they use special algorithms to "enhance" it. That's a questionable claim. It might be true for super large screens where pixel size becomes noticeable but I doubt Apple is going to release anything larger than 55" (even those won't fit in most Apple stores)

This bottles the mind

No "4K" is a standard motion picture format. There are already a lot of movies distributed in this format. But how to move that much data? Blue Ray discs are not big enough and the INternet is not fast enough. So I think all we get are up-scaled discs and picture in a picture type things

I would buy a "dumb" ultra-res. Because I'd want to be able to upgrade the electronics without havingto trash a good 4K screen.

Same with the iMac. I hate throwing out a good LCD screen when I need to upgrade the computer. I'd hate it even worse if the screen cost $25K

Yep, exactly what Apple needs to do right now is put out a 4K TV where we have very little content for 4K, where broadcasters won't realistically be using 4K for many years (HD broadcasts are still 1080i here, let alone 1080p)... Even being Internet enabled how long did it take them to offer 1080p iTunes content over 720p and even then many of us don't have the bandwidth / Internet connection speeds to even dream of 4K streams....

Apple what we do dream of is NEW SOFTWARE!!

iLife. (With new software to replace everything you've taken away from us in recent years like iDVD, iWeb)

Aperture

Logic Pro (really in need of an upgrade)

Final Cut Studio X.5 / XI - about time they added more features many of which still missing since they went from FCP7 to 10.

iWork with a new application to the suite. We're still on iWork 09 for pity's sake Apple, come on and give us a real update and not just incremental updates which arguably have made the software worse over the course of 4 years....

OS 10.9 with some innovation and new features that aren't trying to imitate my iPad

IOS 7 which is more than just 'flattening' iOS 6 and offers iOS users significant change in general usability (such as menus nt being buried miles away in the OS from the actual app such as EQ for music)

These are real tangible things we need from Apple this year.....

More so than a 4K TV....

 3840x2160

Thats high, but my wallpapers are 2400 :)

By 2014, Apple will probably strike a deal with networks.

Of course, by then you'd also expect 4K content to be available too..

* subject to change.

All of this will hit, just when Blue-ray will become the 'norm' for most households :), in which case, these will be useless anyway for playing 4K content (unless people bought these selected players).

Samsung has already shown a 4K tv.

Sony is releasing a 5000$ 50-55" 4k TV

But its quite pointless if you can believe this graph :

resolution_chart.png

At a normal distance of 10+ feet you need a 80+" screen to be able to notice the extra resolution.

The only realy added effect would be for passive 3d, as this would allow for much higher resolution 3d images. Of course those dont excist and people dont care about 3d for the moment .

Ultra Hd Prices?
The situation:
My Wallet 300-2,5K--><-Apple U-HD TV (+/-2,5K ?)-><--UltraHd "today prices" :a lot of K to more than 20K

The resolution of my Wallet is by far below Apple's Retina new Hobby.
I'll stick with an old Panasonic Wt60 when its out this Summer,
with a very very low input lag..and later or in the 2014 with an Oculus Rift.

So many rumors. No verification from Apple. It's just another Rumor as far as I'm concerned
Remember this is Apple we're talking about and there is no pattern to what they do

Pricing is a major issue on the first Ultra HD televisions announced so far, with price tags generally starting around $20,000, although Westinghouse is planning to launch a line of "budget" Ultra UD televisions this year starting at $2500 for a 50-inch model.

In a few months Sony will release a 55-inch Ultra HD, starting at $5000 USD. So prices on Ultra HD panels seem to be coming down quickly.
Sony's 4K TVs to debut in May, starting at $5000

Well if you Buy Sony 84" 4K Ultra 3D HD TV you get 10 movies in 4K with the Tv now and smaller version are coming soon...

What really matters is the mix of input lag, response time, white and black levels
etc etc all in a good target price of 1500 dollars or euros just to start and i don't think the company will be able to match this target point and these specs very soon ...maybe in the late 2014..

Besides, MS just showed a 120" screen. I think in the end we'll all fit screens like Barney's TV wall in our appartments.

80", 3-3,5metres sounds pretty good. But I think for a movie-like experience even 100" and 2 or 3 metres would be nice.

it's the experience, not the resolution.

it's about time.. goodbye Samsung. Again.
