The only improvement I care about is a totally redesigned remote. The current remote is one of the worst-designed remotes I've ever owned. I'd rather use my cable company's remote than this piece of design excrement. It's so thin it constantly falls between the seat cushions, you can't tell which end is up in the dark, and that flat section is so sensitive it will start doing things if you even look at it. A total fail in my opinion.

Apple needs a FireTV Stick competitor. Even if its not 30 USD range. Then a Chromecast Google TV competitor for 50USD.
Just something cheap to bring apple TV to a wider audience .
I'm loving my Roku streaming stick. $50.

I admit I was (a little) mistaken. I wasn't aware the integer framerates were mainstream in broadcast, etc. My focus on the topic has been with NTSC. Anyway, circling back to your original gripe, the 29.97 is 30, 23.97 is 24, etc mentality could be part of the problem -- that is unless your research has turned up a document from Apple claiming the Apple TV doesn't support 24.00 fps. In other words, even those a part of distributing AV content are somewhat lacks on following the specifics. My point is, your problem still could be someone other than Apple not abiding by the standards.

Anywho... I digress as we shouldn't further stray from the article subject.
If you want to know what the standards / specifics are, you should probably seek out the actual specs rather than Wikipedia or other random articles, as I'm yet to see a standard that is at all confused (just some of the folk paraphrasing them!).

FWIW NTSC has zero to do with most direct-to-streaming these days, and because most content being created these days is never going to go near an NTSC broadcast system, there is no longer the requirement to comform the titles to the 1000/1001 rates that originated in.

Netflix are probably the biggest current outlet for recent 24.00p content, but Apple will even happily charge you for 24.00p content that is in their Itunes movie library and they can't then play it back properly... There is a big by no means exhaustive list being added to here for anyone who cares.

I really enjoy my Apple TV and have owned every iteration since it came out.

That said, I really have only 2 issues with it.

1. The remote control really isn't good.
2. Apple TV+ service wasn't as good as expected (still hoping it gets better)

I have no objection to Apple offering a more powerful model with a game controller for users who want to play games. They just shouldn't take the entire product line in that direction.

You raise a good point and maybe aTV and aGameConsole should be two different products. But as much as I do like my AppleTV, it is just horrible value as a streaming box; they need to cut the price in half at least on the streaming box product.

As far as the gaming console, look what MS and Sony are doing to build their products. Apple has the money to really get involved and do something great, but everything they've ever done shows they have zero interest in gaming. Just the fact that they can offer AppleArcade with a straight face says they don't want to be a gaming company.

They need a trade in program for Apple TVs like they do for their other products
It’s 150 bucks. What do you expect. This isn’t a trade in device. Sell it for 100$ and buy a new one. Simple.
you really want Apple to give you 20$ for your appletv you can sell for 100 bucks in a few days?

Yes! New siri remote that is not made of ****ing glass... I have a 5yr old and concrete floors on my tv room... my couch is 40cm high but clearly thats enough to smash and brake the remote, i'm on my 4th remote already. Feels like apple should have at least a replacement program for those stupid remotes... Or at least something better than $10 which is what they pay if i give my broken remote to them to get a new one.

As long as they have an AirTag like feature built into the remote - I'm keen.
I have a feeling everything has been held back until AirTags are ready. AirTags is just part of the story, Apple wants you to be able to locate everything; Apple Remote, your phone, your wallet...

I'm so done with the Siri remote. Way too small and slippery to hold. Maddeningly frustrating user experience from a utilitarian point of view. I do like the ability to call up Siri to search, but that's the only time I reach for it. I use my Harmony smart for everything else.

With that said, I'd buy it if they just improve the remote. Change the shape to make it usable.

Faster hardware is nice, but I'd much rather they fix the problems with Dolby Vision (raised blacks) and ship a better remote.

The current controller can't be the one they intend to use for games. I would suggest that they could make games compatible with Bluetooth Xbox or PS4/5 controller, why reinvent the wheel?

Plus, taking the expense current controller out of the box makes the package cheaper.
Have you not been paying attention? Apple gave third party support in 2015 and with iOS 13 added support for Xbox and PS controllers.

That was my point (perhaps could have been worded better) in that Apple allowed developers the chance to use controllers from Microsoft and Sony so why reinvent the wheel.

For me, the XBox/PS support was good enough. The third party offerings before that were a pathetic joke. I almost bought a nimbus out of desperation, but thankfully never bought that piece of crap. I'm happy with my XBone controller on Apple.

People do have a point though, that with no first party controller, the devs don't know exactly what device any user will be playing with. That severely limits what they're able to offer because they have to use more generic inputs.

That's not going to matter with frogger in toyland, but with a Halo game it's a huge handicap for the platform to not have a "standard" controller.

I wouldn't have thought it would be a major issue as you'd imagine that AAA titles that aren't platform exclusive would have to have developers support both kinds of controllers. It'd be hardly a stretch to do another but I'd say that was more fragmentation if they did, and Apple have an annoying habit of abandoning projects that don't make enough money.

If you think apple is “too pc and inoffensive” you obviously have not been watching apple tv+.

Wait. You REALLY think ATV+ isn't politically correct and inoffensive. Come on now :)
And yes, I haven't been watching it, because there is no content, that speaks to me. Only hook in mouth for me was Beastie Boys documentary, that I didn't even watch till the end, because it was just two guys speaking on stage- really disappointed. Cancelled it recently, just not to get charged for it by my own mistake.

Yes, I really think that. There is a masturbation scene in See. Morning Show is full of swearing. Ted Lasso has sexual talk including a 5 year old finding a vibrator. Etc.

Not sure what shows you’ve been watching, but it’s a ton of adult content that many people would find offensive.

I think we can put any thougts of Apple chasing Sony or Microsoft console markets to rest. Ray traced gore is not a product they are ever likely to produce or endorse.
The question is really if they want to extend and expand Apple Arcade, and if so, how.
An Apple Arcade focussed ATV model is one way of elevating Apple Arcade game play on TV sets, but never forget that their main market is iOS.

Really because my Switch with just 32 GBs was able to handle Breath of the Wild just fine. According to Nintendo's site, the game is 14.4 GBs.
Didn't realise Apple was allowing app sizes of 14.4GBs on AppleTV... Last I'd read, it was 4GB. So, unless Apple allows you to insert your Switch cartridge or increases the maximum app size for AppleTV apps, your 32GB is still essentially useless when it comes to full-featured games like Breath of the Wild. Also, I'm sorry to hear you haven't managed to get an SD card for your Switch yet.

There is much "worse" on Netflix, at least here in the UK.
Pretty much everything on show in this.
