Personally, I'd rather have a PCI-e slot in the computer for a graphics chip that I can use to drive any monitor at much lower cost, especially as displays have a much longer useful life than graphics chips.

But, I've got to admit, this is a new way of looking at computers, Apple is definitely thinking different here.

Maybe it's a touch screen/computer running iOS/(Screen OS?). I don't see much benefit in a simple non-touch monitor having an A13 chip.

keeping away the heat from the laptop...since the A13 can handle smaller tasks...and also they can act like a bridge to provide even more power. M1 gpu+A13 gpu that can deliver some more power
And also for biometrics like faceID , you need an SoC with secure enclave
And since the display will have its own SoC there will be no heat on the laptop side...we know that laptops connected to monitors that can get hot

What if this is the Pro XDR replacement and apple is still working on cheaper displays.

I think apple is going all in on displays now and that building high and low end displays is their goal.
right, it said that — i'm all for it. apple has dropped the ball on their displays some time ago and the xdr, as great as it is, is hardly a consumer product. i mean i'm happy for those who can justify dropping 6k on a display for their personal enjoyment, but i just can't convince myself that to myself. and if anyone damaged it i would have to hurt them badly.

Sounds expensive! But definitely sign me up for that "more affordable external monitor that would be sold alongside the Pro Display XDR".

Then again, I'm actually pretty happy with my LG Ultrafine 4K, other than for it's lack of webcam/mic and the abysmal built-in speakers.

And the glossy shiny screen that looks like a mirror :p

It will be useless if it doesn't have a matte screen with anti-glare and anti-reflection.

A13 makes no sense for that. If it’s going to be an eGPU in the usual sense, you’d expect something faster than the Macs and iPad Pro’s that are likely to be connected (which will probably be sporting M1X/M2/whatever by the time this ships).

Or, it could be so it has the security features needed for Face ID or even Touch ID via an external keyboard...

Or maybe it’s so you can Airplay directly to it from a Mac or iDevice. (Which could kinda be filed under “eGPU” but maybe not in the way people might first think).

Could this finally be the fabled Apple TV? (as in the TV set, rather than the set top box, or the App, or the streaming video service... gonna need a new name) - now that the days of actually needing a TV tuner are fast approaching.

Or perhaps it’s just gonna have really lush on-screen menus...

(Now, if Apple want to sell me a TV they should make a proper *dumb* TV with a screen, a bunch of inputs to connect my various players and set top boxes, and no more “smart” features than are needed to select inputs and pass the sound to my choice of amp/av receiver/sound bar... It would be unique...)
Yup. There are things an A13 might do inside a display, but serving as an eGPU is not one of them. Literally everything that Apple make that could be plugged into this screen would already have a more powerful GPU, and the market for graphics decelerators is quite limited.
