That is not multiple streams, and that is not editing with 4K footage to any extent at all. That’s not proof that the 12” MacBook can compete with the iPad Pro at all. Non of what you’re saying is.

All of my footage is stored on a remote server at the moment and I was only able to download a 6gb clip. I'll be glad to grab more clips once lockdown is over. Regardless:

1. iPad Pro doesn't even accept ProRes footage so how am I supposed to achieve the same grading results using HEVC footage than ProRes (considering HEVC is much more lossy than ProRes)? You can't compare the two. Even worse, how do I even get footage from my BlackMagic camera to Luma Fusion? You can't without some transcoding process on a MacBook in between. Immediately editing on the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard is at a disadvantage.

2. In the youtube link I posted, Jonathan already showed a properly edited video playing fine (and he was using FS7 footage which I've never used but I assume it's not as optimized for FCPX as ProRes is)

Going round in circles here. I can edit 6 streams of 4K in real-time plus effects on the iPad Pro extremely smoothly. That’s all I’m saying. That’s all I was ever saying, so don’t move the goal posts.
The MacBook doesn’t fair as well. The video you posted even said, “it’s definitely choppy”. It’s a provable fact also.

No one seriously editing video ever said, ‘let’s get a 12” MacBook to do it’.
You can seriously edit video on an iPad rather nicely.

I’m not sure why you’re so adamant to argue against this fact - but as I said it’s obviously not the machine for you. It’s fine if it doesn’t work for you.
It works very, very well for me as a professional photographer and filmmaker and my business practicing these things.

My point was "magic keyboard was a mistake". Your counter point is essentially: "the iPad Pro has a camera".
Do you not see how irrelevant your point is in response to mine?

I can already take notes on my iPad Pro Smart Keyboard cover which works great. You simply paid $120 extra to avoid touching your screen to point at stuff, which if it makes up <=50% of the overall iPad usage, doesn't justify the need. If it makes up >50% of your usage, you're better off with a MacBook since it has a far better pointing experience.

If the Magic Keyboard isn't better than a MacBook at some key tasks for which it is meant for, it has no reason to be.
You just don’t get it and it doesn’t work for you. No problem.

The Smart Keyboard does not have backlit keys, a built in trackpad, an extra USB-C port for charging, or as good of a typing experience. Those four things alone are worth the extra $150. I own a 2017 MacBook Pro as well, and guess what, I don’t touch it. Why? It’s not as useful or nearly as flexible. And the MacBook does not have a far better pointer/cursor experience.

No I get it. You just don't get where I'm coming from.

The Smart Keyboard does not have backlit keys,
Which have caused battery life issues. I type without looking at my keyboard, so I have no need for this feature.

a built in trackpad,

Doesn't justify extra $$$

an extra USB-C port for charging,

Which has problems, creating confusion. https://www.macrumors.com/2020/05/12/magic-keyboard-third-party-charging-issues/

or as good of a typing experience.

Apple smart keyboard cover types fine.

And the MacBook does not have a far better pointer/cursor experience.

Completely disagree. Purely using a trackpad, I can show desktop, grab a screenshot file, and drop it into an app (something I do many times a week). And the fact that the trackpad is much larger makes it much more comfortable to use.

And when using a mouse, I can actually turn off mouse acceleration on the Mac. Can't do that on the iPad.

Nope.

He was using FS7 clips which aren't optimized for FCPX. You're using HEVC which are optimized clips for video editing on the iPad since the A chip has HEVC hardware acceleration. If you continued listening, he even says if he transcoded it, scrubbing would be instantaneous with no background rendering. Sounds like you're the one moving goal posts here.

Jonathan has edited full length videos on both a 12" MacBook and on the iPad Pro. He has 2mil+ sub channel and runs a media production company called Sun Squared Media that has worked with Toyota and AT&T. His whole career surrounds video editing. He's very much a serious editor, perhaps more than you and I. If you watched until the end of the video, he challenged Linus to a video competition: Linus' crew with their weapon of choice against him and a MacBook 12" (which Linus declined). You're saying he's not a serious video editor simply because he made this video that goes against your argument? Sounds like you're not being objective here.

No. The machine is for me. iPad without accessories make it a better consumption device than the MacBook. Apple Pencil makes iPad infinitely better than a MacBook in terms of drawing. The magic keyboard doesn't make the iPad better than the MacBook at anything and the trackpad doesn't justify the extra $120 over Apple's smart keyboard cover. Therefore I think the magic keyboard should not exist.

i’m not gonna argue with you, but I do have two points to make.
First, that video is old, so a lot of his points have been negated over the years.
Second, which kind of goes hand-in-hand with first, nowadays he uses a Mac Pro, which no matter what you say, the 2019 Mac Pro smokes both the iPad Pro and the 12 inch MacBook. also, almost everything you said is a personal opinion. The backlit keyboard, the usefulness of the trackpad, those are all your opinions. Literally the only fact you said was that the keyboard has been known to cause battery drain, which I believe was a software problem that was fixed in 13.5.

His main point was that the video production workflow on a MacBook 12" beats Premiere. Still true today when comparing against 2015 Premiere so nothing was really "negated". Of course Premiere has been updated and 12" MacBooks have been discontinued so it's obvious comparing today's versions of the two would be impossible.

But that doesn't take away the fact that MacBook 12" is still very capable of editing videos.

Who said the Macbook 12" would smoke a Mac Pro? That's ridiculous to suggest that.

The 12" was never his primary editing machine. He simply showcased it's possible to beat a 2015 Premiere workstation.

The backlit keyboard, the usefulness of the trackpad, those are all your opinions.

Who said they weren't? GuruZac gave his opinions, I gave mine. You're pointing out something that's fairly obvious.
