Samsung has been making cars for... 20 years!

Taking bets on how long before Samsung comes out with their own car?

Samsung CEO: I just heard Apple is working on a car, let's get it out before Apple does and we'll say Apple copied us!

BTW, Samsung is an asian-type conglomerate, and it has been making cars since 1995. Now owned at 80% by Renault-Nissan, it has been gearing up its production in 2013 and plans to become a major Korean player in the next few years.

So why wouldn't Apple make cars? In the early 2000's, it already made kind of an iPad, and it was a flop (innovating to early when the consumers are not ready is not a good thing); in 2007, even after a few months, the iPhone was denounced by lots of people (consumers and "professionals") as a heresy! Now, when the world thinks about Apple, iPhones come to mind first... And how about the iPod, which everyone seems to have forgotten!

IBM is an American example of such a great company: whatever one says about IBM "as we know it now" (Lenovo laptops, 3" floppy disks, PC, etc.), this company was created more than 100 years ago, and always managed to innovate and adapt to an ever-changing world, accordingly with up and downs.

Oh wait! Just like Apple and its pretty big "down" in the late 90's, before Jobs came back and turned Apple into a "walkman" (WalkMan, what's that? say the kids around!...) manufacturer! Then decided to go fight with the almighty Blackberry and Nokia (remember how big these were, we thought the world would never change!).

So Apple making a car, a watch, a TV set, why not? Apple's strength: when they do something, they try and make it work.

Hmm...

Car companies around the world operate like that all the time. Nothing new. Shared platforms, tech, and yes, vehicles too. Classic example was the Aston Martin Cygnet. Nothing more than a rebadged Toyota iQ to boost Aston's brand average mpg.

I don't think you understood my point. What I mean is even all that rebadging is done by Renault, not Samsung. It still requires a fair amount of design and engineering resources as well as management and marketing staff. Samsung doesn't get involved in any of that other than getting some percentage of profit. It's all Renault/Nissan who manages the company.

Samsung actually did have a more ambitious plan but they were too cash strapped to invest large sums into the new motor company amidst the Asian financial crisis and had to shut it down while selling all they had to Renault who now owns 80% of the company and does the actual work. The whole restructuring of the Korean motor industry during the late 90s is also the reason for Kia and Hyundai being one company.

Between Made in Fremont and Made in China I'd play it safe and go with the former.
