Split screen, multitasking and snapping were unvieled in 2011 and developer preview were also released in 2011.

Article Date: June 1st, 2011.
If you want to get into the minutia over dates, then let's throw out the original Note with split screen multitasking (Feb 2011), which predates the reveal of the Surface prototypes.

I suppose you'll break out with the release dates of an ancient XP based tablet next right?

Great Apple! You are only 5 years late.

Apple is so behind in os tech its ridiculous, yet their fans claim it's the best is in the world.

Smh if this role were reversed, Apple fans would be screaming, up in arms about how everyone is copying them, how Samsung and windows is stealing their ideas.

How Apple revolutionized multitasking would be the topic on every tech site. But since Apple is late... Heck forget that, u will still see those titles even though they are 5 years late.

No one cares about copying of specific features because everyone does it. They all do multitasking to varying degrees, notifications, app launchers, etc.

What Samsung does is copy the way it looks, functions and launches and sell it to people that want Apple things but do not want to give their money to Apple.

"For iPad Air 2 or newer"

How about "For iPad Air 3 or newer" :p muahahahahahahahahahahaha...

Sounds like you need an actual computer!

Wouldnt that be the same as a pro tablet ? In a post pc era .

What i would really want is a convertable hybrid macbook with adaptive dual Os.
And the new slim macbook proves the technology is there to get it done and be practical.

I don't really see the point of multi-window multi-tasking... It's a tablet, not a computer. The screen on the iPad is tiny. I own a 15" rMBP and the screen is small enough that I run the majority of my applications full screen. Even on my 27" monitor, I tend to have applications like my browser full screen...

The trackpad on the MacBook is awesome with Spaces, I just switch from apps to apps with a flick of fingers. Same on the iPad with gestures. That's even faster than clicking on a application to bring it to the front.
Split-screen on the iPad will only work with the applications that are compatible. Moreover, a lot of applications will work, but the user experience will not be optimal when having only half the screen. I would just rather have plenty of RAM and optimized switching to be able to flick very quickly from app to app.

Split screens / full(proper) multitasking is not a feature. It's a fundamental aspect of the operating system and design of the device. Lack of this is indeed functionally crippling to iOS, especially on the iPad. This is not opinion. Apple is objectively behind in the area. You can successfully argue that missing it does not matter, both in sales and the general usefulness of the iPad, but you cannot argue that Apple is not behind when multitasking is still missing.

The only things standing in the way of "full fledged applications" are customers willing to pay for the value of those "full-fledged applications".

In an ecosystem overflowing with freemium and $0.99 apps it is difficult to swim against that tide with a "full-fledged application" that sells for $30-40.

Well yes ....that is a part of it... But with 2 megs of ram at best, full fledged applications will be inefficient/slow or downright impractical .
Plus file management .. So important .

If we are talking Pro.. Then i expect Pro level performance and functionality.
I like to have a full blown photoshop or a 3d modeling application run smoothly on a "PRO" tablet .
Or even better an adaptive dual os hybrid convetable macbook
New macbook proves it can be done and it will be sweet ! :)
Or it should not be called "PRO"

Apple knows what the public needs/wants but they will continue to add incremental small changes so they can string alone it's consumer base to upgrade to get features that are 3-5 years old.
This has always been their strategy but I think the next iPhone release will be a telling sign of people tired of Apple governing remedial features.
2015 will be the start of declining attraction to Apple products.

I can see what you are saying in some areas and i scratch my head wondering " why apple , why ?"
But for the most part i feel they bring great stuff to the market. Stuff that are revolutionary and implemented correctly. As opposed to specs on paper.

And i am nowhere near thinking 2015 is the inflection point for Apple products.
Lots of exciting things on the horizon . Ecosystem and synergy is getting better by the day .
They just should put a bit mor emphasis on software function and quality ...It,sometimes , can be stupid, other times esoteric and impractically idiosyncratic .

Yeah... Right...

USB Type-C is NOT going to come to iPhones or iPads. USB-C has all the features to replace Lightning connectors, but Apple won't use them because it will "confuse" their customers. In other words: they will stick with Lightning or some other proprietary port.

inefficient and impractical? Not exactly. Most full-featured software will be able to run fine with that RAM. But I get the nervousness regarding RAM... I've been in my share of 4GB vs 8GB RAM MBA discussions. :)

Yes, greater exposure of the file system is going to be needed. But it needs to be done intelligently. They can't just slap on a file selection dialog API and file manager and call it good.

Absolutely. I'd love to see a convertible Macbook that runs OSX when attached to the keyboard but iOS when separated. I believe that we'll see something close to that, but not with the iPad Pro.

It's important to note that "Pro" is just the word floating around the rumor mill. I think it'll be called the "iPad Plus" when it finally is unveiled.

This is a really interesting point about what people are willing to pay for.

One of my friends loves Pokemon on his 3DS. It's pretty much the sole reason he has a 3DS. He doesn't use the 3D feature at all.

I asked him, if he could get the exact same game on his Sony Phablet, would he? He said "maybe". I said, would you pay £30.00 for the app? He said "No way."

So, rather than adding the game to his phone for £30.00, he'd rather buy a £100+ console (an extra thing to carry) and a £30.00 game. We're just not used to paying a lot of money for mobile apps, even if it would make more sense to do so.

Compared with what exactly?

Apple started over when it built iOS. Apple wanted an OS that would do what is needed, without being more than what is needed. Microsoft by comparison shoehorned Windows into a tablet. Look where it got them.

Right between the two we find Android. I have an nVidia Shield Tablet with lollipop, and iPad Mini Retina with iOS 8, and an Asus Vevo Note Tab8 with Win8 on it. The Notetab is my least used tablet. I use the nVidia and iPad side by side all the time.

The two tablets that can not do side by side split screen, are the ones I use the most. The one that can is the one I use the least.

I suspect that my anecdote isn't worth anything (and it shouldn't be), so why don't we look at the numbers...

Yeah, that's what I thought.

split screen from apple...lol

There is no convenient way of splitting your windows on osX. Why would there be a nice way of doing it on ios? I have a mac but my workstation is windows...and it's way more convenient snapping/splitting the screens.

I say they need to fix it for os X as well. I find the windows to be messy in os X.

I really hope they will bring this functionality to Watch OS 2. I would love to show this off to my friends who own Samsung Galaxy watch :D

There are many factors there for you, but obviously multiwindow isn't one of them. Perhaps the greatest reason why don't use the NoteTab much is because touch-optimized Modern UI apps are fewer and of lower quality than what is available for Android and iOS.

I too have Android, iOS, and Windows tablets, and my Windows tablets see the least amount of use as tablets. (I DO use the Switch 11 as a notebook and sketchbook) I can trace that to the apps.

Multiwindow on my GTab 8.4 Pro is very handy. I can have a word processor open in one window and a reference app (or website) in another and be able to switch easily between the two. That's on an 8.4" screen. That capability on a larger iOS-based device? I drool with anticipation.

a little too late.

Surface Pro is where it's at.

Right?????!!!!!

I absolutely LOVE using handoff on my Surface & taking my calls, texts, and emails so seamlessly. And the ApplePay on my Surface is SO convenient! FaceTime rocks on that size screen... and sooooooooo many apps. Multitasking & user accounts?! Sweet!
Oh wait... I guess I'm describing an iPad Pro. Surface sucks.

So iPad Pro will have:
  • 12.9-inch screen
  • Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular versions
  • USB port
  • Split-screen multitasking
  • Multi-user login
  • Keyboard attachment option

So the question is, how much? 16GB iPad Air 2 starts at $500, but with "Pro" moniker, I am guessing the entry level iPad Pro will be equipped with 64GB. So minimum starting price will likely be $700 for Wi-Fi 64GB iPad Pro, going up to $1030 for 256GB Wi-Fi + Cellular configuration.

That is awfully close to 12-inch MacBook ($1300 with Wi-Fi and 256GB, in contrast to my estimate of $900 for 256GB Wi-Fi version), especially if one adds keyboard attachment smart cover/case (which will easily cost at least $100).

Yes but the iOS app (touch) experience is far different from the OS X (PC) experience. Even if icon's are similar.

Multi-user support should be based on TouchID. You use your specific fingerprint to access that user profile.

Or

Keep one profile, but your fingerprint only allows access to certain apps you've downloaded, and only the documents created with your profile - like a lockout system - on the one profile.
