I use apps full-screen on my 27" Mac monitor, so split-screening is kind of lost on me.

But multi-user accounts would be phenomenal. Please bring it to the phone, too. I'd love to be able to log in and out of my "work phone" each day.

My wife uses Citrix to work from home sometimes, and she prefers my iMac for that over the 27" monitor I got for her because the higher resolution lets her work split screen with ease.

Depending on what I am working on, I go back and forth between full screen and splitting it with different apps. It is simply a personal preference, but I can't see it being very useful on anything smaller than the full iPad. I have a iPhone 6+ and find the landscape mode of some of the Apple apps to be a bit cramped.

I'm with you on multi-user login. Just make it fully featured and add parental controls!

This is a step in the right direction. It'll take many more before iPad becomes useful enough to replace a laptop.

IMO there needs to be a much more robust OS for iPad, something in between OS X and iOS. Needs to be much closer to OS X, otherwise like many have stated before iPad will continue to be nothing more than iPhone with a slightly larger screen.

I don't think Apple ever wants iPad to become a laptop replacement, just a laptop helper. And I think a lot of that has to do with the app ecosystems that are in place. That said, I do think iOS can add some features to become a better "helper." This split screen functionality is a huge step.

Just adding a stylus won't work for the ipad pro; imo thats a weak idea and will be telling of Apples post jobs ingenuity. i'd like to see some sort of os x, ios hybrid.

My surface pro 3 is where its at right now for work. For media consumption, still cant beat my ipad air 2. I carry both when i travel, they still weigh less then my old MBP which was a back ache to lug around the airport.

I think this is Apple's vision as well--for their consumers to carry around a light MacBook and an iPad with them. Not a hybrid. Which isn't too bad, just expensive.

I assume none of this would be practical or included on an iPad mini.

Why not? The Samsung Tab A does it and it's pretty much the same size as the Mini and less powerful.

I doubt split screen will come to the Mini and I think it has to do with the size of the touch targets. I read somewhere that the Mini was the smallest size they could shrink an iPad while still being able to use regular iPad apps with touch targets that were reasonably big enough to hit. Split screen those apps into smaller screens and the touch targets on the Mini will become smaller than what Apple finds reasonable.

Because you know that's exactly what Apple is gonna do, to help "distinguish" it from the other two iPad models. *ugh*

Because they'll want it to be a selling point of the larger screen, of course ;)

It might also have something to do with hardware requirements (RAM).

Apple doesn't break trails, they just pave them so the hipsters won't trip over the stones.

As a professional (absolutely not a hipster) who uses my Apple devices for work, I actually appreciate being able to concentrate on my work and not have to constantly google how to fix and tweak things like I used to have to do on my PC/Android all those years before I switched to Apple. I couldn't care less who does it "first."

Just get a real computer: MacBook Air. The iOS is a toy.

Sounds like you need an actual computer!

Personally I need that slate form factor for pen input (assuming Apple makes a pen for the iPad Pro), because I need to write and draw. Other than that I don’t care if it's an iPad or Mac as long as it’s reasonably functional and fits in smoothly with my work flow. But you're right, I'm sure a computer that rivals the portability of an iPad, like the rMB, would more than satisfy many of those people who want to use the iPad for work on the go--at least those that don't realize that iPad apps are largely redundant if they have superior Mac applications.

I don't really see the point of multi-window multi-tasking... It's a tablet, not a computer. The screen on the iPad is tiny. I own a 15" rMBP and the screen is small enough that I run the majority of my applications full screen. Even on my 27" monitor, I tend to have applications like my browser full screen...

The trackpad on the MacBook is awesome with Spaces, I just switch from apps to apps with a flick of fingers. Same on the iPad with gestures. That's even faster than clicking on a application to bring it to the front.
Split-screen on the iPad will only work with the applications that are compatible. Moreover, a lot of applications will work, but the user experience will not be optimal when having only half the screen. I would just rather have plenty of RAM and optimized switching to be able to flick very quickly from app to app.

Split screen will be more valuable/usable on the bigger screen of the rumored iPad Pro. Also it's not just about quickly getting from app to app. It's about seeing both simultaneously. Eg. taking notes on a video, copying a complex formula, sketching from an image.

I can see what you are saying in some areas and i scratch my head wondering " why apple , why ?"
But for the most part i feel they bring great stuff to the market. Stuff that are revolutionary and implemented correctly. As opposed to specs on paper.

And i am nowhere near thinking 2015 is the inflection point for Apple products.
Lots of exciting things on the horizon . Ecosystem and synergy is getting better by the day .
They just should put a bit mor emphasis on software function and quality ...It,sometimes , can be stupid, other times esoteric and impractically idiosyncratic .
EXACTLY !
Apple has become a large corporation and are more worried about the bottom line instead of providing a product with the BEST FULL FEATURED APPS and OPTIONS.
They will continue to offer great products with LIMITED abilities and features, only to provide them later at an incremental product update.

5 years? Siri was just upgraded last year. It includes a bunch of new commands in iOS 8. . . And it added new languages in iOS 8.3.
Plus I and everyone I know don't have issues with Siri. I hear her voice around my college campus dorms sometimes.

Today: Where is the nearest Olive Garden?

Siri: Here is what I found for All Live Garden...

Maybe you need to start knowing more people.

Anyway the story get better. After saying WTF!? I repeat the question to Siri while my wife seeing me frustrated with Siri pressed the Cortana button on her Windows Phone. Next thing I know Siri gives me the same answer while I hear Cortana say: "The nearest Olive Garden is 1.1 mile away"

Or maybe this is not considered "an issue with Siri"

Great. Now how about they give me a stock calculator app.
They'll release that in ios 10 and it will probably require a ipad air 3 or newer. :D

----------

There are many Pro's who don't need large storage for photos, videos, audio etc. and will be quite happy with 16 GB.
Nobody is happy with 16gigs.

Even if you don't store lots of photos or videos, apps are huge nowadays and they continue to grow. Heck, my facebook app takes up almost 5 gigs, dropbox is over 1 gig as well. And if you happen to play games, well, most of the good ones are 1+GB as well.

First try dude and I can't even pronounce Olive that well with my Speech impediment. It took about 3 seconds
Tried it on Windows 10 with Cortana, it took two tries and 3-4 seconds for results (not bad). My roommate's girlfriend tried it with Cortana on her Windows Phone and it failed 4 times already.

I'm texting my Gamers group and fellow Percussionists right now for more results.

I want an iPad Pro but I might wait for the second version just because there won't be enough pro software available at launch to warrant it. Hopefully it starts with at least 4GB of RAM so that developers can have a decent starting point for their "Pro" level apps so we can do some full-resolution RAW editing and have larger canvases with more layers for drawing with this so-called pressure sensitive stylus.

Split screen multitasking is a bit late. Back when I would have needed it most was in college when writing papers and such. It could be occasionally useful now but not as much.

Multi-user support is a bit late too. Would have been great having that back in college when my wife and I were poor. Now we just each have our own iPad, lol. Could work well for the kids, however. Especially if it works like I predicted years ago (before Touch ID even existed) and uses Touch ID to automatically "log" them in to their iCloud, home screens with their apps arranged and other settings.

I guess better late than never. They're starting to run out of features they could add. I just hope they don't add too many as iOS really needs a good optimization/bug fix update.

Whats the point of split screens on iOS since u cannot drag info between apps. ?

This looks like more of just a side by side view only. Maybe easier to copy and paste split screen, but if your going to be doing that anyway, u may as well use the task switcher as we currently do.

a little too late.
Surface Pro is where it's at.

agreed, generally. But Windows 8.x lack of true background multitasking creates its own issues. If you want to listen to music or podcast--be prepared to lose 1/4 of your screen

Right?????!!!!!

I absolutely LOVE using handoff on my Surface & taking my calls, texts, and emails so seamlessly. And the ApplePay on my Surface is SO convenient! FaceTime rocks on that size screen... and sooooooooo many apps. Multitasking & user accounts?! Sweet!
Oh wait... I guess I'm describing an iPad Pro. Surface sucks.

Yes the surface is garbage. The inking and typing experience on the ipad are awesome. I guess you know now Surface has multitasking & user accounts?

----------

YES, 2015 will be "The return of the iPad"!!!

many will be returned

Pro's. And Games. Why would a profession user care about (a) the size of the Facebook app, (b) the size of games. Unless you have a very strange view of what a professional user is.

Split screen will be more valuable/usable on the bigger screen of the rumored iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro, if there is such a thing, will only be 13", that's still pretty small. But that's also big enough that touch interaction will become uneasy. Just like using a large (A4 or more) graphic tablet is annoying.

"Also it's not just about quickly getting from app to app. It's about seeing both simultaneously. Eg. taking notes on a video, copying a complex formula, sketching from an image."

I still feel that putting side by side is lazy design since it just recycles interactions models from the desktop without trying to find something better suited for a small touch device. For instance, for some of your use cases, transparency would work better.

Why do you have to be a "professional" user to own and use an iPad pro? A casual user and an iPad pro have to be mutually exclusive? I can think of a lot of casual users, myself included, who can find value in a stylus, larger display, multitasking, etc. Point being, there will be games and social media apps installed on iPad pro's.

I tried it as well and it worked perfectly.
Perhaps the guy who says it didn't work has it set on the wrong country or even has an odd accent etc. Not sure.
That's not to say Siri is perfect, far from it.
It still gets some really basic words wrong and also has some trouble with an Aussie accent, even in the Aussie version! So, there is definitely room for improvement, even though the last update was a huge step forward.

Apple knows what the public needs/wants but they will continue to add incremental small changes so they can string alone it's consumer base to upgrade to get features that are 3-5 years old.
This has always been their strategy but I think the next iPhone release will be a telling sign of people tired of Apple governing remedial features.
2015 will be the start of declining attraction to Apple products.

they're more like 2-3 viable years old, as in: 5 year old features are usually half-baked and barely usable in life situations. you're not entirely wrong there, but there's a reason people prefer apple to roll out these features (into the apple ecosystem specifically(!) in a manner that works better. i know this just sounds like 'it just works' bs, but for most people it's true. we're tech geeks who hone in on this stuff, and the complaints flood in, but i seriously don't know anyone in real life who has the problems that MR commenters do. i think many are expecting the world on a platter or are incompetent with their machines and devices, tbh.

and as far as your speculations about the iPhone, that came out of nowhere, and with nothing short of record breaking sales on an still upward climb with the last phone. and the rumors of the 6s sound like it may literally be the best iPhone yet. so, no... highly disagree lol

it'd be useful at 9.7" for tons of people - why would 13 inches be 'small'? you hold iPads closer to you than laptops - usually by a good 8"-10"

I couldn't resist asking Siri the question about Olive Garden. Her response was that she couldn't find any lawn and garden services. Same response twice.

----------

Had my wife try it and it worked fine. Must be a pronunciation problem.

Great Apple! You are only 5 years late.

Apple is so behind in os tech its ridiculous, yet their fans claim it's the best is in the world.

Smh if this role were reversed, Apple fans would be screaming, up in arms about how everyone is copying them, how Samsung and windows is stealing their ideas.

How Apple revolutionized multitasking would be the topic on every tech site. But since Apple is late... Heck forget that, u will still see those titles even though they are 5 years late.

More like 20 years lol. More than one window open at a time on a screen? Stylus? Multitasking? At this rate you guys might get.... gasp... mouse support!! Hehe that one would only be 45 years late.
