Burn in and change over time. It's still a thing. It's still a problem no one has solved.

I haven't seen burn-in in a longggg time on OLED displays. Maybe if you leave the home screen on for months like a store model but even then the new panels are much better than the old ones. Not sure about "change over time", I haven't noticed it. OLED blacks are so much better than LCD, so much so that if you put them side-by-side that LED looks completely washed out. If Apple is looking into it now they must believe in it more than LCD too.

They should make a display fused with battery - two main components in iPhone that occupy lot of space. :D

Sounds like they're working on more energy efficient displays that don't require a backlight. Wouldn't that improve battery life?

Yes but what if you can do that plus put in a thicker battery.

You would have a battery lasting days or even a week on heavy usage.

Seriously. The thunderbolt display is ancient. Apple needed a 4K display in 2013 when they updated the Mac Pro. At this point it's sort of ridiculous.

I went with the 4K Dell P24 went it dropped below $400. Works perfect. Got tired of waiting.

This is exactly why this research lab exists. To accelerate the technological development of OLED stability to meet a 2018 deadline when consumers will only replace their machines with "better" ones.

Im in the market for two 4k-5k Thunderbolt esque displays. Come on Apple . . . . . . I dare you to take my money.

Why wait to spend $500 more?

I'd suggest the same - you might discover that battery life is highly variable to conditions and use. You might also learn that making such blanket statements makes you look as silly as the people you're ridiculing.

first of all why would you suggest the same? that makes no sense. i'm obviously not one of the people who stares at their screen 8 hours a day. that makes you just as silly as the people you're ridiculing.

So you discovered that battery life is variable because your glued to your phone all the time. i get it.

LOL thinner. So funny story. My friend got her son a new iPad Air 2 for his birthday (October), but he was "misbehaving," so he is to get it for Christmas. He's 12. So he knows he's getting it. However, he likes the iPad 3 he still has because of it's bulk and size (thickness), just it's slow to play the games he likes. So tonight he was complaining about how thin the Air was, and how "he could throw his grandmother's across the room" it's so light and thin. He want's his mother's original iPad Air because it's thicker than the new iPad Air 2 he's getting.

So I guess not everyone thinks thin is in!

I guess if you could get everything else super thin, but keep the phone thicker with larger battery that would be ok. But going thin at battery expense is dumb in my opinion, especially for a phone.

I like the idea of having a thicker battery as part of a removable case. That way I have the option. I can have it thin and sexy, or thick and extra-long battery life.

I don't think I need the battery case for myself (I have a couple of external battery packs that I can pack when I need them). Including the thicker battery in the phone would not give me any choice. I'd have to pack that extra weight all the time.

Just because you don't know about it doesn't make it a secret.

If it was a secret nobody would be wearing badges and there wouldn't be a big apple logo in the lobby.

Exactly. Rather than bulk up the phone by adding battery, Apple is trying to use materials that can extend the life of current sized batteries.

Sorry, but creating more energy efficient components does count as innovation. True innovation is actually making the iPhone thicker just for the sake of a bigger battery. Pack in the biggest battery you can because there are no trade offs to having a bigger battery. And thinness has no direct correlation to usability. It doesn't make one-handed use any easier. The MacRumors groupthink is strong on this.

I already see the day when they announce the thinnest iPhone ever. Only 1.5mm thick, and it comes without internal battery, screen and storage. But fortunately you can connect all that through the Lightning port.

Oh, but not all at the same time, since it only has one port…

ha ha ha.

errr. no.

People still complaining about a thinner device over a slight battery boost ay?

Sure, add those few extra hours to the 14ish hours of battery life I already get. Maybe if I stay up and didn't charge my phone, for what ever reason, I'll still be able to use it! :)

Good. The technology progresses through the ranks, it doesn't just get exclusively used on iPhone.

The thinner the display is, the lighter it is and the rest of Apple's products, especially iPad and iPad Pro need to lose some weight.

I get it, you all hate on the thin obsession but the truth of the matter is some products like iPad Pro and Apple Wach wouldn't have even been possible to manufacture had Ive not taken this path, I for one am grateful.

Efficiency and weight is key, but y'all have zero vision and so bleat "It doesn't need to be thinner" at every given opportunity.

Battery life depends on several conditions, true, but I never saw it below 6 hours, and it's a long time...
He has a point

Legit question, when is the last time any of you whipped an iphone out of your pocket and thought "my what a beautiful thing you are, if only you were thinner!".

Slimming down components is one thing, let's make room for more battery! But when the discussion veers off into design and experience compromises for the sake of thinness... something seems wrong.

Can't you think of anything new to compliant about? There is a legitimate reason to make components smaller and thinner. It creates room for additional technology or larger batteries. In addition it developes technological understanding and innovation capability that benefits other technology.

Like I said above, no vision.

They're waiting for technology to catch up to where they can release a 5K Thunderbolt display. My understanding is that that's about to happen with Thunderbolt 3.

Not to say that excuses them not updating the design, but at this point, I assume they just want to kill two birds with one stone.
The rate things are going, I think 8K would be better. At least the movie industry would like them. The sweet spot would be 30 inches for the small size.

I hate OLED so much.

......until iPhone adopts it. Then you love it too much. Typical!

I really don't understand this obsession of people with batteries. For weeks? Seriously, where you heading to? Amazon forest? What good would a weeks battery be? It only takes me a fraction of second to put my phone on charge before I go to sleep. My iPhone 6S battery goes to 10% just before I go to bed, perfect timing to get charged.

Pack in the biggest battery you can because there are no trade offs to having a bigger battery.

Great idea. Something like this one below (Thanks god you don't work for Apple)

People that hate OLED have spent no appreciable time with OLED. I can't even look at the iPhone screen anymore.
