Apple keeps going back to this "social" thing, Ping, Ping connect or any social-like behavior... Have u forgotten what your main goal for users are

I'd be surprised if this is accurate. Seems like such a dumb idea to try to re-invent the wheel. If Apple could put a unique spin on this app then *maybe* but they haven't been known for being innovative in the last few years. Maybe the integration with iMessage and iCloud might give them an advantage over other social media platforms?

Apple being apple they will limit it to the apple platform. If they do not go multi platform it is a waste of time and effort. How often do I use iMessage nowadays? It is all whatapp for 75% of people are not on Apple. And of the 25% a large portion just uses whatapp for it can reach the other 75%.
Now that I have a Note 7 I would happily pay to be able to use iMessage on it. I'd even be willing to pay a modest subscription fee...unless Google's Allo comes out and totally kicks butt. Their Duo is great so far. iMessage is what everyone in the USA wants to go cross platform because Whatapp isn't as widely used here. If they price it right for people outside of iOS it could go well for them. But timing is everything. They've been running late to the party for awhile now.

They are starting to remind me of Microsoft. There was a topic on this forum about the Surface phone and Microsoft phones in general and how they were allowed to die a slow death because Microsoft decided to focus on its services. Well Microsoft was never a huge leader in its smartphones so the loss to the consumer was mitigated.

But if Apple slips on their hardware...well the hardware is the heart of their ecosystem and which in turn is what keeps customers hooked. They can't afford to get lax with their hardware. They can offer services like Google and Microsoft do, but leverage these services with the best engineered hardware on the market with the best customer support in the industry and the best privacy policies.

I only went to the Note 7 because Apple apparently hasn't thought to innovate in the area of a pencil enabled phablet...with water resistance and a large high res OLED screen in a small form factor.

if I could have a facebook without all the negatives ads being one of them. as simple as imessage...then I would be in

As if the market isn't already crowded enough. I think Apple may be a little too late to this party.

And it's another sign that Apple senses the party may coming to an end with the iPhone (or at least the wild, intense party they've had the past few years).

Of course Apple's hardware revenue is slowing down they stopped updating it... What new hardware they do bring out they have made boneheaded decisions like only including a single port.

Hey Timmy....Know what I'd really like to have in a "video sharing social network app"???

A decent MAC to run it on!!!!!!!!

Until then, take your social media services and cram them in your pipeline.

The hardware business is shrinking because Apple's innovations have been slowing.

My MacBook Pro is almost 6 years old, but there's little compelling reason to upgrade now. Better screen, USB 3 and a little better speed (although the rumored refresh might add many.)

The iPhone 7 isn't looking like much of an upgrade from the 6. Yet Samsung is actually making inroads by doing things like waterproofing, including better screens and wireless charging. Why is Apple now the one playing catchup when they had such a huge lead.

The iPad Pro gives little reason for Air or Air 2 owners to upgrade. They're lucky that other companies have not made compelling tablets, although Microsoft seems to be on that path.

Apple dedicating resources to a social networking software platform is just plain stupid.

Get back to the stuff that made Apple the greatest tech company of the last decade.

Dear Apple,

No. Just no. Stop it. Stop it right now.

Apple Fanatic

With hardware now saturating the market, I think its a great idea for Apple (or a division of Apple) to start focusing on mobile software and services.
iMessage is a great service that I use every day, so why not continue this model with other ideas.
Apple will always release new phones, it's not like this new service is impacting hardware in any way.

Oh boy; stick to your core business, Apple.

I agree. In 2007, they should have stuck to their core business. They had no idea how to make a phone. And making their own custom ARM chip? Not in their wheelhouse. Not in their core business... until they made it part of it. But, hey, they should have stuck to what they were good at...

Oh boy; stick to your core business, Apple.

Why? Apple has the money, and the resources to technically be in multiple fields at the same time. They should be using all that revenue and profits to help grow business by expanding into new fields

The problem Apple is facing right now is they can't seem to "multitask". they only seem to be able to focus on one set of products at the same time. Apple needs to realize they're not the company they were in 2006. its 2016 and they're one of the largest and most revenue possitive companies in the world. They need to adapt, and grow their business, by also allowing there to be multiple teams on multiple products that don't need to pass everything through 1 or 2 people.

They SHOULD be perfectly capable of updating all their linups regularly. Seriously, they've got a giant building being made. Are they honestly such a disorganized mess internally that they'll have thousands of employees, but can only work on one set of initiatives at the same time? Doubt it.

It's comments like these that confuse me. I think it is great that you have a MacBook that has lasted 6 years. You are getting the bang for your buck. Windows laptops on the other hand are cheaply made plastic systems that may last 2 years. Are you wanting to have to buy a new laptop every couple of years? Consumerism at its finest.

Samsung innovating? They had waterproofing and wrote it off as a gimmick feature back on the Galaxy 5. They then added it back on the Galaxy 7 due to rumors of Apple going to it.

Let's analyze the waterproofing feature. Do we need to have protection from water? I guess for swimming it would be cool but again, that is 3 months out of the year. Is there really a need? I say no.

You guys keep bashing Apple for innovation but fail to understand that not many companies release haymaker products in their lifetime. Apple has done it a few times in a short period. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. In fact, I challenge you to come up with an innovation for Apple to work on. I'm pretty sure you will just look at a feature someone else has and say add this. That isn't innovation.

Why can't Apple just accept that Social Media is not really their business? I know they want a monopoly on everything, but this is one of the things they can't get right. Ping has proven that. But if they want to take the risk, be my guest Apple. Will be interesting to see what they'll do. :p

Besides the proposed video app, Apple has also been working on "multiple social-related features" for iOS over the past year, none of which have launched. One proposed update includes consolidating every communication between a user and a specific contact on one screen, so "two friends could be able to see all text messages, e-mails, and social network interactions between each other in a single window."
So basically windows phone 7 from 2010

My windows laptop has lasted so far for 4. Try again

Almost. You just needed to say Awesome 4 times and mention the magic pipeline twice. And you forgot the plug for watch bands.

Because that's Tim Cook's Apple: copy instead of innovate and inspire others to copy you.

Yeah, because cheap plastic builds are mandatory for windows laptops

You can buy a Windows laptop for $300, and you can buy a windows laptop for $2000 that has a superior build to any mac, better parts, and a more stable OS.

If you want have a tiny little closed mind, it's your loss. You miss out on all the good stuff in the world. But when you spout it like that, you only look like a fool.

This move is so bad it's embarrassing. I was literally covering my face with both hands, peeking through my fingers with one eye to read it. I couldn't even bear to read it all - I don't want to see how this one ends!
