And right there is Google announcing that they are working on Backstage that will do the exact same thing. I get the need to expand beyond the phone because it makes no sense to be a trick pony. But Apple has not done too well in the services. Eddy, maybe its time to hang up your spurs and let someone else teach the pony a new trick or three.

at least no-one can't say they don't get back on in their feet and try again after previous failures - but you could say thatthey don't seem to learn from their past mistakes.
hardly anybody is going to use a social app on iOS if it dosn't work with android as well - because that goes against the definition of "social", if you exclude half of the population. expect another ping or connect.

I would rather have them woking more on the hardware part and try to keep up with the rest of the world at desktop and phone line. Very curious what September 9 will bring but for some reason the direction apple is going does not represent me at all. Social media... what a BS... guess Apple wants to benefit also on people's nativity. Like it was not enough info about ourselves out there, we can now all forget about voice biometrics cause someone out there will now know how your voice sounds like.. god knows maybe someone will ask your parents to send them money via WesternUnion in your own voice...

Rather than another app, just add these features to iMessage. People are more likely to use iMessage seeing as it's something they use every day. If they're wanting to be more like Snapchat or whatever, just turn iMessage into a real Snapchat/Instagram Stories competitor.

We just want upgraded hardware! Remember, what was it called, Ping? Apple doesn't do social stuff very well.

Social networks are very much zeitgeist. They each have a gimmick which allows kids to express themselves in a particular ways, they're fun, fast and simple and new. I am no expert on the rise of social sites such as Snapchat and Instagram but I would imagine they start in small and influential areas, capture imagination and then sky rocket.

Apple's downfall in this area is, perhaps, down to its size and lack of ability to capture the imagination. Previous attempts such as Ping have been thrown out to everyone as one big empty space that needs filling, where is the fun in that. There is no excitement in that, there's no discovery of the latest thing, no sharing of the must haves.

A massive user base is simply not enough to get a social site to take off. If apple wanted to create a social site they would be more successful by setting up a secret start up with no obvious ties to the Apple brand. If and when it grew they could tie it in to their own ecosystem.

I don't see this being profitable long-term. Kids are fickle these days, and what's popular today is not going to be popular tomorrow. Facebook was all the rage until parents figured out how to use it, and now it's importance among the teen demographic has plummeted. It's only a matter of time before the same thing happens to Snapchat, Instagram, etc., and those social media platforms are replaced by something else.

The market is too crowded, and with Android's marketshare, I frankly have no idea what Apple is thinking. If anything, it looks like they're grasping at straws -- it's an implicit acknowledgement that they've let the ball drop on their core products, and now they need to find ways to offset that lost revenue.

Apple seems to have lost their focus, at least that's how I view it.

Its all they got. Making new MacBook Pros is just so last year. They gotta be hip, man.

I'm referring to tech in general. It seems like everyone is trying to find the next way to share pictures or swap faces. I'm looking for something that actually changes the way I do things that pay for the mortgage, plan for my future, or go about my day rather than distract from it.

Also, have you noticed the sudden surge in development around sharing self videos now? It's kind of sad that people can't find any enjoyment from just being around each other anymore. Instead they all seem to be obsessed with avoiding them unless it's online using a staged expression or acting like their lives are different than they are.

Ping was social, and I never used it a single time. I do use iMessage and FaceTime, which are also social. So if Apple wants to make this work, they need to learn not only the negative lessons form Ping, but the positive lessons from iMessage and FaceTime.

If social media were just one particular thing, it would be called "social medium".

It's called Ping-eo! (Ping + Video)
Seriously, Apple could make a good go at it, it would be successful. No ads, no selling user data, it will be just fine.

**** sake Apple stick to your core business, have you not seen how popular the new 2in1 market has become why not make a proper OSX based 2in1 or something, its not as if people have been asking for one for ages or anything. iPad Pro isn't cutting it compared to the Microsoft Surface and for once I agree with a Microsoft ad.

I love Apple products but they seem really stale nowadays based on the competition and its a shame.

Look at how well the iPhone SE is selling and learn from it, make a 2in1 and make it cheap enough for the masses to buy it and you'll find it to be a case of "build it and they will come"

Thing is once you have the customers on your hardware they will then be more likely to invest in Apple services such as the App Store, Apple Music etc.

I mean if you want to enter an already established market why not create Apple Movies as a Netflix competitor and maybe do a discount if you have both Apple Music & Apple Movies.

There are too many social networks, and lets face it if Google are struggling with Google+ I don't think even apple can win over the masses.

As someone who used Windows Phone for a bit (because I have to try new things, it's a problem) it's one big selling point was the social media integration directly into the platform. It was really nice and blew iOS and Android out of the water. The business model behind Windows Phone still failed, but the technology was well thought out and Apple might do well to do something similar.
