I hope these things are ready + ship with iPhone 7.

Yes, I think shipping with wireless AirPods is MUCH more likely than lightning connected EarPods..

Despite all our reservations..

In fact, I wonder if Apple have done some research into how many iPhone users only ever use the white EarPods that ship with the phone, and never any other headphones?
If that figure is 90+%, then perhaps they just don't care about our little minority that care about sound quality!

;)

I hope it comes with a clip on microphone/controller so I can still make and recover calls as well as pausing/playing music.

Does this also mean the iPhone will only work with Apple earbuds or third-party earbuds that have licenced the chip from Apple (like the lightning cable and docks)?

That's my main concern over bluetooth earphones.
How can I adjust volume during a phone call? And how can I answer to a call or activate Siri? And where is the mic?
EearPods are convenient because the mic is quite close to my mouth and I can control the volume leaving my iPhone alone.
I guess some of those problems may be solved using Apple Watch, but what if you don't have one and the iPhone is in your purse/bag while you're on the go?
The clip you're talking about would be bluetooth as well, so a third gadget to charge and to bring with you, easy to get lost.

Is this for the benefit of the consumer or Apple? I'm thinking the latter.

Apple is trying to compensate a little for the removal of a critical component to their phones.

However I'm sure proponents will be devoted to the Apple marketing machine and believe everything they say....

Funny how some people think Apple will include these "for free" with the iPhone 7. Clearly they will include a wired Lightning version and sell the wireless version for $150. And release a dongle for the old analogue jack for $29,99.

How else do you expect Apple will earn billions next year?

I´m scared of blue-tooth. Doesn´t that stuff fry your brain? A mobile phone, sure, but you don´t keep it to your head all the time. But a headset? Forget about it, it stays there for hours.. :S

We just re-invented the motor car, so lets's ban bicycles and walking, 'cos no-one needs those anymore. Old technology belongs in the past...;)
No one is banning bicycles and walking. The Apple Car will not have pedals for propulsion, nor will it have a hole in the floorboard so you can make it go "flintstone-style".

I think you are more likely to suffer brain rot from the stuff you listen through your headphones than from BT signals.

Do you understand what the impact actually is? We are not advancing here.

You already have the option to use BT or wired from lighting port.

You are loosing the convienice of a "legacy" adapter.
Just as before, when Apple removed the built-in CD-ROM from its computers. It was convenient to have that SuperDrive with you all the time. Apple took away that convenience.

Or permanent hearing loss.

Give me these with 9 hours or more of battery life and I'm in.
Another convert.

I would say most people do, given how many people you see using them.

People who want higher quality audio buy more expensive headphones can continue to do so: Either by buying wireless headphones or by buying a lightning adaptor.

I think you've got it the other way around, they'll most likely ship next iPhone with the lightning wired earphones, and sell Airpods for extra $150+. (This maintains the highest profits for Timmy)
it's not "for Timmy" whatever that's supposed to mean. it's how all business and in fact all of our economy works -- you want something nicer with more features, you pay extra. Apple is a publicly traded, for-profit corporation. not your buddy.

I hope Apple's also prepared to sell each channel separately. These will get lost.
so do earrings -- can you replace those one at a time?

Just as before, when Apple removed the built-in CD-ROM from its computers. It was convenient to have that SuperDrive with you all the time. Apple took away that convenience.

When I bought my current Mac, I also got the super drive. I knew I wouldn't miss the built in drive (I prefer having a lighter computer, because I so often have it in my backpack, combined with the space being used for other things like batteries) but even I'm surprised at how little I use it.

Quite frankly, I wish it plugged into my Apple TV so I could just use the one device with one remote plugged into my TV. I'd use it way more then than I do with my laptop.

If they want to improve the earbuds, how about making them more comfortable in your ear. The hard plastic they use is fine for about five minutes, and then my ears start to hurt. Use the flexible rubber nibs (maybe include a few sizes too) and they'll fit in everyone's ears a lot better than the current ones.

So they can either include them with iPhone 7, making the phone an easier sell, or include them separately, making them and the phone a harder sell?

My hope is for a basic set of Bluetooth earbuds out of the box and for a pair of premium headphones (receiving the Apple Pencil treatment) sold separately.

Anything is better than a 3.5 jack.
Get rid of those damn things already. The sooner we get away from wired old technology the sooner improvements will come.
The past belongs in the past.
Maybe for Apple. The 3.5mm jack will remain integral in other devices for years after they've exited the mobile phone market. It's almost like expecting the basic design of your standard in wall receptacles to radically change overnight. It's simply not going to happen.

Radio wave is not. But battery explosion will. Don't tell me you ignore those Phone/laptop battery explosion incident, even though it happens relatively rarely.

Ah yes, that is different. The battery explosions are not exactly a comforting reality, but I rarely give it any thought.

We already have Bluetooth headphones but sometimes you need a wired jack because I find my BT headsets are always not charged at the worst possible times.

Bluetooth rarely drops... sound quality is pretty good with AptX codec.

Which Apple does not support (unless changes in 6s models)

I think the argument to remove the headphone jack is flawed when compared to Apple removing the floppy drive. The successor to the floppy was the CD, but the successor to the 3.5mm jacks is not BT audio.

I actually have not used a pair of wired earphones for the last 8 months or so. But what I have had to do is plug in my Beats Studio Wireless because of wanting long sessions of audio. Sound quality is generally not better than wired, but of course the added benefit of not having pesky wires is always a plus

Right now, I do not think there is a dire need for Apple to do this. More drive needs to be placed on screen and battery technology IMO before the removal of the 3.5mm jack

But even though Apple does this move, CD is still being sold in many places around the world. It does NOT disappear even after so many years. Means what? Apple is NOT the game changer, and CD is not entirely obsolete like floppy disks and cassettes.
Sure, it is inconvenient but the impact is smaller than taking away headphone jack.
Nonetheless, Apple is not god.
