You gotta push technology that way. Otherwise you can be sure we would still have beige computers and floppys if it wasn't for Apple. Most companies (Blackberry for example) become pretty comfortable milking their old success.

Do you understand what the impact actually is? We are not advancing here.

You already have the option to use BT or wired from lighting port.

You are loosing the convienice of a "legacy" adapter.

I could give not one sht about "legacy" and I can't for the life of me understand why anyone unless they worked for the 3.5 jack industry give a fk about it either.
Insanity.

Just something else to charge
Let it go already. Lightning ear plugs will work fine and so will your precious 3.5 headphones.

It's like you people are a religion or something. Nothing changes, Apple is just offering sane people another/better solution. You can keep your old plugs. No one is coming to your house to take them from anyone.
People need to chill or sober up.

As long as bluetooth is an option and there is some wired alternative, this is fine. Keeping a radio transmitter next to your head, no matter how tiny, just seems like a bad idea long term.

(And I use wired ear pieces in order not to have the phone right next to my head either!)

Please point me towards the nearest scientifically-sound, reputable research that suggests radio wave transmission is harmful to the human brain.

Radio wave is not. But battery explosion will. Don't tell me you ignore those Phone/laptop battery explosion incident, even though it happens relatively rarely.

It's just like 3D Touch. A cockamamie scheme, but with no logic of reason behind it. Never took off.

Those are different.
Floppy drive is replaced due to explosion of data storage density. Beige computers are replaced simply because they are too costly. But 3.5 mm headphone jack? Replace it for what? Better sound quality?
No matter how good those wireless EarPods are, once they are out of battery or signal interference is too strong, they are useless. Just like wire has inherit problem of tangle or twisted cables and pianful cable management, as well as limited range (wait, wireless does also have this problem), problems menthioned beforehand are inherit problems of wireless technology.
They are not technologies can only be replaced, and there is no reason to drive consumer market to go all wireless.
Wifi is a good example of this whole wireless signal interference. The addition of countless wireless headphones would only worsen the situation.

Too much of any technology is never safe. But you'll lose your hearing from these long before you develop brain cancer from them.

Although the Apple Pencil's solution to charging is hardly elegant, I find it to be amazingly convenient.

Hopefully, Apple earbuds are similar to the Jaybird X2 but with the ability to plug into an iPhone or iPad for a quick charge (15 seconds for 30 min use). That would be great
Yeah but then everyone would complain that you cannot keep them plugged in while listening kind of like the new Magic Mouse.

Let them work til they split their barrels.

I hate Bluetooth and will only buy phones with headphone jacks.

I agree Bluetooth is not my first choice either, but this is where the industry is leading too. Eventually wires will be a thing of the past, Bluetooth surround sound systems, headphones, Smart Watches, Vehicles, Computers, Televisions, Gaming consoles are all examples of Bluetooth connectivity.

It's a matter of acceptance until we have no other options. Believe me, it won't be just Apple taking then plunge, others will and eventually Bluetooth 5 will be here. Hopefully it will be an easier adjustment over time. But I do understand your frustration.

It's cause headphones are ANALOGUE.....and right now today, you can block the 3.5mm jack with superglue and have your wonderful future where you can use BT or a headphone connected via lighting port TODAY! I use the lighting port to power a set of headphones .....TODAY!!

No No ....they are offering less choice! They are taking away choice , nothing new is added.

It amazes me that people yelling most about the removal of the 3.5mm jack cannot grasp the simple concept of digital to analogue . Wow.

This needed to be released this with the iphone 6s, or they should have delayed the removal of the 3.5MM, and released these buds one version before they proceeded with the removal of the 3.5MM.

BT will be the future eventually, so hopefully they will release something shortly.. Usually I'm ok with Apple dropping a tech for a superior one, because there products were far superior to their competitors. So any negatives were outweighed by so many other pros.

It really looks like the iphone 7 will be the lame duck of smart phones. And I bet you these headphones won't come out in Sept.... I bet you they will be out sometime next year.. Because they have a lame duck risk averse CEO.

I bought the Earin bud on closeout at Best Buy and I love them. If Apple makes their version, i'm all over it. The convenience in my office environment is phenomenal. These types of headphones are only going to get better. The Earin's have their flaws, but you learn how to deal and the pros by far outweigh the cons in my world of use. Can't wait to see what Apple comes up with.

thing is 3.5 and wired is not obsolete. you people do realize its alive and well, right?. The music you love, the movies you watch....this stuff is recorded over wires. good enough for the production side of the house...good enough for the user.
you will find a vast industry of recording devices that are driven off 3.5. And xlr, other industry standards...all this wired.

Its accurate and reliable. No delay if not wanted (board control for effect on input signal(s)), no drop off, no freq issues. BT in current state is not at this level of trust as it were really. getting better...yes. still has a very long way to go.

We aren't concerned because we are members of the society for anachronism. People like me are concerned because some bt/wireless or death types....are flat out clueless really. Apple looking to this ignorance for ways to steer their product development...is just scary. If one is speaking about the state of audio tech...at least know what the hell is going on in that realm. beyond I hate wires so they must suck and go away.

Your lack of understanding is funny. But instead of regurgitating what a fellow lacky has said, read up and not further make a fool of yourself. Of course it needs to be transformed back to a mechanical vibration before it hits your ear kid, but it can do decoded to do just that ANYWHERE along towards the end route. Not just at your simplon understanding of the 3.5 jack.

Simply said, an electric current is turned to sound via vibrations and air. Analog. But wtf makes you think a 3.5 jack is best suited for that?
Ask one of you acolytes to try and explain this religious event for you.

They'll be wired lightning earbuds, headphone jack will be removed. Can listen wired or wireless. They charge from the phone via lightning cable and the wire disconnects from each bud and they're wireless. Calling it now.

Anything is better than a 3.5 jack.
Get rid of those damn things already. The sooner we get away from wired old technology the sooner improvements will come.
The past belongs in the past.

We have been through several iterations of wireless network technology from 801.11a/b through g, n and now ac and yet wired ethernet connections are still:
a) faster
b) more reliable in terms of connections and throughput
c) more secure

Meanwhile, connectivity of the future like moribund Firewire and now Thunderbolt are languishing in the wake of legacy alternatives. Sometimes newer is just newer. Not better.

Are you joking? Never took off? 3D touch hasn't even been out a year.

I get what you're saying about losing functionality, but that's assuming they don't add anything. What if they pass analogue through the lightning port? I have a feeling they don't want to alienate their audiophile customers. Their job is to invent a new way that's better than the current. It's a high bill to pay, but I'm willing to see what they've got.

Current earbuds are crap and I'm sure these will be too. Not a very good selling point if they come bundled with the new iPhone.

Remember when touch screens used to suck? And then Apple came out blew everyone away? Call me optimistic, but I hope they do the same thing with wireless audio next month. If they're really getting rid of the 3.5, they better have something amazing to justify it.

"Lame duck?" You do realize that around 70 million people will have bought the iPhone 7 by the end of the Christmas season? Remember that the doomsayers on MR who troll everything that Apple does are an infinitesimally small percentage of phone buyers.

That would be the best of both worlds. I like it.

Oh then we should just give up then. Because nothing will ever ever be better that the 3.5 jack.

What a bunch of bs

reading this simpleton explanation, I deffo know a lot more than you on the subject.

It's called a DAC, it will still need to be present in the iPhone , and you will need another one in the chain to the heaphones.

lets do it this way genius, how is the removal of the 3.5mm benefiting the end user? By adding a second DAC I the chain? By adding price to headphones , by making lighting port heaphones not compatible with any other device ?? Do tell.

Or is it the ***** BT should quality compared to wired if you choose wireless.

Since this concept is way beyond you....remember when we moved from VGA to DVI and there was a benefit ....here we are moving from VGA to VGA via another adapter .... SOUND QUALItY will not improve.....so what's the benefit, you give Apple more money ?
