Greedy? Lol. After paying full retail for all our Apple devices, it's the least they can do. C'mon Apple.... 5GB per device.... You can do it.
I know, I was just trying to be a bit witty

But you're absolutely right, it's not like they can't do it. We deserve some kind of upgrade, it's iCloud's 5-year anniversary, after all.

It's the go-to obnoxious and unhelpful response. :)
Yeah, it definitely is!

Apple, can you please raise the 5GB limit for iCloud to at least 10GB? Thanks!

5 GB serves the needs of many customers.

If you need more, you can purchase 50 GB for $0.99/ mo (3.3 cents/day), 200 GB for $2.99/mo (10 cents/day), or 1 TB for $9.99 (50 cents/day).

Simply pay for what you need.

I dunno which is more creepy, the fact Apple does this all themselves *on queue", or my own postings just happen to somehow co-inside with MR's own reporting.

Now i really have got chills.

But if Apple can pull this one off, I hope they fix allot of stuff up along the way.... No point in doing a cloud service, and not learning anything from previous experience is there.

I wish Apple would give us 1TB of iCloud storage for free.

We should not need to think about whether we have enough storage, any more than we worry about having enough electricity. If Apple were to truly follow their ethos originated by Steve Jobs, they would provide a superb free cloud service.

It's such a shame that something that would cost Apple relatively little would make such an improvement to the whole user experience, yet they are too blind to comprehend it.

I don't care how much storage they have just as long as the data centers are 0.5inches thinner than the last ones! ;)

This!

And I really hope they remove all the connectors, and just have it all running out of a single usb C port.
Can't innovate anymore, my ass! Go apple!

I would rather they give us PER device.

i totally agreed on this, they should give per active device. I have a mbp, iPhone and iPad. the backup for the iPad and iPhone is almost 1GB each. With 3GB left, for icloud photo and others, it really not enough and i ended up having to upgrade the plan.

That is driving development of a multi-billions dollar cloud system? There is more to this story.

There is .. Money. They said the ROI is a few years. And continuing to scale up means bigger and bigger AWS bills. Totally makes sense.

S3 is slow compared to what you can roll your own. Apple leveraged AWS to get iCloud off the ground. Now it's time to bring stuff in house.

Additionally. I am sure Apple has a lot of concerns about the governments involvement in AWS. Apple is rumored to be working on a major beefing up of iOS security. I am sure this is also a big part.

They want you to buy more ... It's *not* that expensive lol

Apple is unhappy with AWS's inability to quickly load photos and videos onto iOS devices, something its own cloud system could fix

Something about that statement doesn't jive. Many other companies use AWS to load content very speedily onto devices. Netflix runs their entire operation off of AWS I believe. More: https://aws.amazon.com/solutions/case-studies/ If Apple is having issues, they should probably look first at their implementation.

I'm not saying that its not worth it for Apple to build out their own cloud infrastructure capabilities - they more or less need to for their size to stay competitive in this day in age. But that reason just isn't sitting right.

They should include 1TB iCloud storage per IOS device purchased for 1 year. Get people hooked and then they will continue to pay. They should really be promoting this with the 16GB models especially since they still insist on making them.

I think they should just stick to current providers and charge us a ridiculous amount for using the iCloud. So that they will keep getting bigger and richer and they're awesome that way. Hey Apple "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY"!

I agree... although 1TB might be a little too much for every single Apple user.

But yes... give people a decent amount of free storage and get them used to it... then they'd be more willing to pay for it. If they like the service... I don't think they'd mind paying their "Apple bill" once a year.

And it would be even better if they made bundles. Combine Apple Music with iCloud storage. Apple really is a one-stop-shop for many things.

Maybe Apple should make a commercial with Cookie Monster saying "store every photo you've ever taken with your iPhone for $12 a year."

I don't think most people even know about iCloud storage and iCloud Photo Library... yet I see people all the time complaining about running out of room on their iPhones.

A small yearly payment could solve that. People already have their credit card in Apple's system!

Like others here, apparently I was thinking wrong in this. I was always under the impression Apple has their own in house solution. It would be nice to see them bring this into the fold. It may be why Apple has always struggled on the service end.

There are no permanent allies in business, only permanent interests. There is no guarantee that Google will not pull a "google maps" stunt and start screwing Apple over with regards to the cost or the performance of their cloud storage.

For a company of Apple's scale, it still makes more sense to be in full control of your own infrastructure so you get to dictate the end user experience and can rest secure in the knowledge that you are not hostage to the whims of 3rd-party vendors.

My guess is that the data center that was built in North Carolina was, in fact, for running iCloud. However, as the number of iPhone and iPad users exploded, they needed additional capacity faster than they could build themselves, which is why now the bulk of it is hosted by third parties. So, the upshot of this news item is that they are going to bring it all in-house again.
