well the iPod touch / iPhone will be useless at most unis until it supports 802.1X authentication!!

OMG seconded. I would love to get one but the lack of 802.1X is horrible. Hope those kids know they are an unsecured network. Or edge...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

Sounds really gimmicky to me. Baiting students?

Yes! Apple must add this to be able to log on at most colleges! I bet you this college doesn't even know that hahaha. Maybe someone using the SDK can help us out here?

Its a good idea, it just has drawbacks with iPhone needing a contract, iPod Touch not having data as readily available to it compared with the iPhone.

I use my iPhone everyday at university and its by far one of my best purchases ever. The core functionality of the phone being so brilliant complimented by a decent university network and services as well as the obvious access to the main internet resources you use makes it pretty unstoppable when working at university.

Mostly everyday somebody will ask me if they can use it to check something, look something up, check their email for notices, check exam results, look up datasheets etc etc the list literally goes on and on and on and on.

Have had it for 4 months now and people are still commenting on it. Something thats bog standard that cant do much doesnt get that sort of positive attention.

It also tried to eat my lunch today in a watery lettuce and mayonnaise fueled accident....

It's gotta be a marketing ploy to boost enrollment.

Same went with the iPod, when it was given to the incoming classes so they could "listen to lectures". My butt!

Yeah, Duke really needs to resort to "marketing ploys" to attract students.

Do you even think before you post?

I personally think this is a brilliant move. As a student I use my iPod touch to organise nearly everything, so that I always stay ontop of my work, and can keep appointments with different societies. It also allows me to check my student email, check lecturers office hours and refer to the course guide .pdfs all while I'm on the go, and don't need to carry around my work with me, which is a huge bonus, since theres plenty of times when I'm just out and about like that. I know this is seen as a bit of a gimmick, but if this is used in the right way, this could really make students much more efficient. I know that some may use it to view Facebook and the like, but surely the iPhone/touch should not be used to replace textbooks, just merely to help the student (esp freshers) to get information when they need it most.

I hope this is more of an Apple related project, as it does seem very interesting, and would definitely help the brand name among students, as it should provide a very fluent interaction for students. (PDAs and Mobiles are usually VERY fussy with Uni wifi networks, from my experience)

Mistake

Wow! It would be great to use an iPod Touch or iPhone on the campus network!

...oh, what do you mean no 802.1X support?

Really, if Apple is going to deploy technology to Universities with wireless networks, they will need to add WPA Enterprise support with TKIP or AES encryption (basically, 802.1X support) to their devices. Most IT departments are not going to compromise campus network security by setting up shared WPA-PSK access.

Apple needs to take this seriously and just add the damn 802.1X support.

WPA Enterprise?

Does this mean they will support WPA Enterprise. I know my college all wi-fi connections use WPA Enterprise authenication which requires a username and password which matches the universities Unverival Login Names....

Oh come on, this is bait. People should be able to discuss why they're doing it else why post the article at all?

Talk about the article, talk about the iPhones at univerisities.

Agreed! Come on, Apple! How hard could it be?

Well said!

Keeping this post more on topic, although my uni uses a open wifi w/ VPN authentication, I certainly can understand why Apple really should add 802.1x. Seeing as it is really frustrating when your device that could do SO much won't work. Least they saw sense with the VPN. Keep that in mind and keep hope guys :D

I'll be interested to see how it works out. The iPod distribution is still going strong at Duke. Now if only Apple would spit out the SDK so Lotus Notes could make it onto the iPhone and maybe Duke Medicine would start distributing them to 1st year med students! :)

wow, lucky students!

Amen, but what happens when a student drops or somehow kills their iPhone?

I sense new grounds for expulsion.

Yes, it sounds cool because it's free. However, like with the iPods at Duke and other universities, this won't work either. It's just free stuff.

Of course "free" for students always means "paid for by tuition increases of equal or greater cost". But still, if they're buying a bunch, presumably students will get them at a below-retail cost and will have access to support and service on-campus easier than supporting an array of devices.

Anyone have a mirror of the video? I can't even access their web page. Are they getting MR'd? :)

ding ding ding

Seriously, before Apple can push these two products in the the higher ed market, 802.1X is a MUST. Everyone (in college) I know that has one complains about not being able to connect to the network. We use WPA2 Enterprise TLS with a couple of certificates. Kind of important!@#!@#

Fair enough. In fairness ACU is an accredited school so my comment was unfounded anyway. Not my intention to insult religion, just seen too many unaccredited institutions - whether religious or not - urinating all over the name of education.

Still seems like a gimmick though.

I wonder how much more these students will be paying in 'fees'. I imagine it will be a lot more than what the device is actually worth.

I'm all for the ipod, but forcing it upon students is not a good thing.
