In an internal memo shared with Apple Authorized Service Providers this week, Apple has acknowledged an issue with installing iPadOS 18 on iPad Pro models with the M4 chip. We first reported on this issue earlier this week.

The memo, obtained by MacRumors, states that a "small number" of these iPad Pro models are unable to power on after a customer attempted to install iPadOS 18 on the device. Apple is working to resolve the issue, and it has made iPadOS 18 unavailable on affected iPad Pro models in the meantime, according to the memo.

Apple has advised technicians to attempt a force restart of a customer's iPad Pro model, if the device has experienced this issue.

It is unclear how long it will take for Apple to identify and implement a fix.

I think beta updates, and iOS updates in general, need more vetting. I know they already have developer betas and public betas, but how about one more level that’s more selective? Before you send the beta to anyone with a free developer account, send it to a group of maybe 5,000 or so trusted developers to do testing on. Not an alpha release necessarily, but just an extra layer of testing to make sure there’s no issues before a bunch of people who don’t understand the risks of beta testing install it.

Wouldn't be surprised if Apple already does this. Like release it a few hours earlier for randomly selected 0.001% of devices (which would still be a lot!).

I wish people understood you can test all kinds of scenarios with all kinds of combinations using hundreds of testers and…you’ll still end up with issues once the public gets their hands on it. Testing isn’t as cut and dry as people think it is.

Software these days is ridiculously complex.

This happened to my M2 iPad Pro 11” during 18 private beta. Battery emptied in the night and I charged it in the morning. Came back and found it wouldn’t boot. No matter what I or anyone tried, it would never respond. Even plugging into a Mac didn’t help. Only thing I got was a feeling of warmth on the back at times. Apple replaced it with a new unit. Running the public beta now and hoping it doesn’t do that again.

I think I’ve seen similar reports during this beta period on Reddit and elsewhere.
