I have been absolutely roasted on here numerous times for saying that it's best to give it a few days before upgrading. People get so hostile about that, thinking Apple is infallible. Meanwhile, while this hasn't happened a lot, it has happened a few times over the decades. It's just not worth the headache.

I’ve been on the 18 RC on my M4 11 inch Pro since last week no problem with installation, that and no graininess with the screen so thankfully I’ve not had any issues with this iPad so far.

What is striking is that this affects a brand new product that presumably was designed with iPadOS 18 in mind. If any product would have been tested I’d have thought the M4 pro would be top of the list.

I’m running iPadOS on two of my 4 iPads capable of upgrading…no issues so far. Waiting on my phone for now. Only 1 Mac updated to Sequoia, but it to is running just fine.

In an internal memo shared with Apple Authorized Service Providers this week, Apple has acknowledged an issue with installing iPadOS 18 on iPad Pro models with the M4 chip. We first reported on this issue earlier this week.

The memo, obtained by MacRumors, states that a "small number" of these iPad Pro models are unable to power on after a customer attempted to install iPadOS 18 on the device. Apple is working to resolve the issue, and it has made iPadOS 18 unavailable on affected iPad Pro models in the meantime, according to the memo.

Apple has advised technicians to attempt a force restart of a customer's iPad Pro model, if the device has experienced this issue.

It is unclear how long it will take for Apple to identify and implement a fix.

Running 18.1 on my m1 iPad Pro. Working great!

It’s a good job that not everyone follows that advice. Because then the Guinea pigs would just be delaying the inevitable, and everything would be back to square one, with a few wasted days.

Mine completely bricked Monday evening just a black screen and any combination of buttons did nothing. I took it to the Apple Store Tuesday who said they will send it to their service centre. I went to the Apple Store again on Friday to pick up a new phone for my wife and asked about the iPad at the Genius Bar, the service was the most unhelpful I've ever had in over 20 years of dealing with Apple. He gave me the number for the service department.

I called the service centre and spent over an hour on the phone trying to find a solution that didn't involve me waiting 2 weeks without an iPad. He said that the reason why I haven't heard anything about the status of my iPad is that the service centre are inundated with bricked iPads.

Obviously a small number when you sell millions of a product is too many for the service centre to handle.

The annoying thing is that they could just send me a new iPad as they have plenty in the store, but they will only send a returned or refurbished model and apparently they are all out of stock. When I asked about a refund he tried to push me back to the Apple Store who weren't answering their phones.

It's been the worst customer service I've had from apple and the worst customer service I've had from anyone in a long time.

Yeah, especially since M4 iPad was released prior to iOS 18 being in dev beta.

It's been obvious for quite some time now that the yearly update cycle is just too much for Apple. It's not the first time multiple issues get through the beta program and make it to the release version.

Can't we have a solid working update once in 2 or 3 years?
Stakeholders are going to be furious if Apple doesn’t release new stuff every year, and get frustrated again when their incremental updates don’t check out in terms of sales.

Funny.
But honestly, I want a simpler and closed OS, not all the legacy. I need it to work, not to tinker with it. And I use it specific as a separate device, when I’m out and about, sitting in meetings reading pdfs or scrolling forums etc. that is where it shines. Not as a tiny tiny 11” laptops that can do almost everything rather bad.
