I wonder why they don't use this a marketing strategy? Instead they use this 'Touch ID'. WOW...

Because Touch ID is existing tech and this is 'under development‘. Apple doesn't market on what they hope to do or plan to do, that's Samsung etc. Apple markets on what they are doing and have done

This is great but you know what would be better? If my iPhone detects that I'm driving and it automatically launches my favorite music app, goes into power saver mode, and audibly reads back my text messages (or at least sends an auto-reply).

And disables the keyboard. That alone would save untold lives.

For me this M7 chip is the innovation within the 5S, not the chip itself but the idea of how you can use it. Seriously, WTF Apple!?

did you expect anything else from the company that thought siri was something to brag about?

Sounds like they're fiddling while Rome burns. Unless of course this 'M7 motion chip' has legs and goes out and about seeing what roads/shops/services exist and noting exactly where they are. That's the only way to enhance mapping.

Not true. There are many ways to find out more info. Getting it directly from city and state sources like they were able to do in China. Getting it from the various companies that can tell them where stores are located and if one closes is another.

Yes! I agree. And it's probably a good test as well to see how well the iPhone 5S's M7 chip is used in the real world once it is released into the wild. I believe it is definitely something (the M7 chip) that Apple has learned from developing the iWatch that they figured would be useful in the iPhone 5S.

As you intimated, get developers onboard with apps to make use of it which will then work with the watch when it's released ("Look at all these great apps already available for it!").

The M7 will be critical to the iWatch. Just wait.
yup.

Also imagine the extra capabilities that come with two M7 chips on the same person coordinating their data with each other over blue tooth.

The one application I want to write with such setup is along the lines of tracking the limb movements of dancers ( say classical, ballet etc. ) in their practice. The possibilities are limited only by our creativity.

There will be more use for this at first glance... as well as that thumb scanner thingyyyy!!!

(Now you will be getting speeding tickets via your iPhone... )

More like creating tech that knows when you are driving and doesn't allow you to use your phone, say teens texting or drivers holding phone up to ear to talk rather than having both hands on the wheel.

These are cool ideas and all, but if Apple was gong to implement them, why wait until now? None of these "new" functions are specific to the M7 chip, the M7 chip only relieves battery life (or strain on the processor).

You answered your own question. They didn't do it before because of the battery life and instability it could cause by straining the processor. Dying batteries and constantly crashing apps are two things even the biggest noob can see and freak out about. Apple wasn't about to do something they knew would likely cause such things. So they wanted until they had the tech to do the tricks without the issues, or as least as much of one.

Like the part about not joining wi-fi networks when you drive by. That happens on my iphone a lot when driving home. I'll stop at a light and try to do something real quick and my phone has joined a really weak network (optimum usually, they cover most of my ride home but poorly...) and it takes longer to do then if I just used my cell data.

I think its a great feature. But in the cases you describe, you should still be focusing on driving, and your surroundings, not your phone and its screen.

Why don't you just turn off, "Ask to Join Networks" in the Wi-Fi settings?

Sources say that Apple is testing a tool for its Maps app that, with the M7 chip, could analyze when your car is parked. When you park your car, the iPhone will register the car's location. Now when you return to the parking lot, your iPhone will be able to help you assist with finding your car since it knows the vehicle's location.

I hope http://www.automatic.com/ patented that, because it already does this.

Only do it at stop lights. Sometimes, even pull over completely. Never while car is in motion.

I have. These are known networks. The optimum network is through the cable company in my area, and they have public hot spots.

For the record, this hardly ever happens and is hardly a huge deal, its just nice to see a new feature that I've thought about. Sometimes the ipad does that when the kids are on a long trip and netflixing a movie. It then stops the movie until a better connection is remade. I always have to explain to them whats happening and explain why the ipad is not broken. Ah kids!

A feature that I have been hoping for a long time: your phone being able to sense when you leave home, and turning wifi off for your. Or sensing when you arrive at work, and turning your phone on silent automatically. These things have been technically possible for a while (ever since gps geofencing) but would have killed your battery in no time. Now, they're certainly possible. Excited to see what Apple can do with the M7 chip. Unfortunately, I get the feeling all this stuff is going to come in iOS 8 once they've had time to stop focussing just on the look, and more on features they can add

Additionally. I wonder if they will market a car charger. They never have and left it to third parties. Doesn't mean the couldn't though.

Imagine a car charger with a usb port, from Apple, with an integrated iBeacon. The iBeacon could use BT4.0BLE to mark you cars location when it connects/disconnects.

Obvious reference to iWatch. Apple having M7 in the wild will be great for feedback on accuracy and more importantly battery life.

Apple probably would have preferred to keep M7 quiet, but with them needing developers to put it to use they were stuck between a rock and a hard place.

And here was me thinking my fitBit Flex had at least another year of use. FitBit/Jawbone etc - time to start panicking!

The future will be interesting.

The M7 chip, fingerprint scanner, and 64 bit processor don't exactly blow my mind right now. But two or three years from now when they provide a lot more functionality, we will see apple start to pull away from the competition.

This is the first major fork in the road. Apple knows what path they are on. They are going to leave everyone else behind

Cool. Yet another category of apps rendered irrelevant.
First, the "flashlight" app category with the built-in flashlight feature in Control Center.
Now the "find my car" app category.
Keep it going, Apple!

You can't patent a concept like find my parked car. It's how the device remembers where your car is parked and how to help you subsequently find it that can be patented. It's the details. I'm sure Apple is not planning to willfully infringe on automatic's or anyone else's patents.

Good point. Because up until now, and moving forward for the time period you specify, no other company has done/will do these things.

I'd say that Apple's custom 64-bit A7 is the first fork in the road.
(And, as an aside, a future quad-core 64-bit AX chip could power a MacBook Air.
Don't forget that OS X started life on PowerPC RISC-based processors.)
But yes, Apple more than ever controls their own destiny in terms of hardware + software integration.

You missed the core of Apples event.
"iPhone 5S, the most forward thinking phone we have ever made."

This isn´t just some useless tech to save a couple of % battery in 5S, it´s part of a much broader strategy Apple is yet to unveil in new products. It´s part of building the ecosystem.

I´ll bet you my two cents that they will announce this new product category within the fall. And it will use the M7.

You realize that every phone with a GPS could already track your location right?
But that happened before everybody was overly cautious about privacy, so it's okay. Apple should have waited with this until everybody forgot about that privacy thing again, in like two months, maybe three.

People are kind of stupid sometimes.
