Qualcom is going to lose untold billions of Apple dollars in future lost business simply because a few short sighted and greedy executives at Qualcomm wanted more and more and more.

Well unfortunately for them, they're going to find out the hard way that unreasonable royalty demands won't be tolerated forever when none of the future billions of iPhones sold in the.future use Qualcomm modems. Greedy idiots.
 
I laugh every time I hear the term “5G” used. There is no such thing as “5G”. There is no “5G” standard. You’ve got different companies testing what they refer to “5G” in different localities based on different technologies which is cute from a marketing standpoint but in reality it’s nothing more than that.

The major carriers would help their existing customers more if they didn’t spend a cent on “5G” until an industry standard is approved and instead focused more on shoring up their existing LTE networks. I get a better LTE signal at home near an expressway than I do downtown in the city closest to me when I’m at work. Let’s start by fixing that before we worry about implementing a standard that only exists for the marketing department.
 
There is a reason Qualcomm has the best comm chipsets and Intel has very large shoes to fill here.
 
Nope. 5G is vastly more complex.

Firstly it requires RF black magic, testing, working with telcos, testing, compliance to wireless standards, testing, chip design, more testing.

Their other innovations were closed-loop and they didn't need to spend years getting through red-tape as well as years of internal testing. It's a massive undertaking but I'm sure Apple are speculating what the next tech after 5G will be.

I'm sure they'll bring it in-house one day. Probably when they have it neatly packaged up in their SOC and can therefore just buy the IP or division from Intel.

Edit. IOS is software and in a different realm. It has been worked on for over 10 years in a never ending development.
There have consistently been rumors that Apple is doing a baseband chip in house. Not sure they have any desire to take on the RF lol
 
People who chose their phones based on minor peak wireless bandwidth are not apple’s kind of customers.
It isn't minor, and that's a very dumb blanket statement - plenty of people are concerned about this and compromising 4G or 5G quality over a legal dispute is a negative for people who buy Apple products, especially in the most expensive phone available right now. If the differences in the upcoming 5G hardware is even more drastic, that's a serious problem.

Personally, I hope Intel beats the pants off Qualcomm - or Apple designs its own chip that's better than both of them.
 
Meanwhile, back at the NO Spin Zone, the reality is, it will take Intel many years to catch up (to where Qualcomm is today) ! ... and Qualcomm isn't sitting still' they have their own Army of Engineers working on their stuff as well.

I see it as posturing by Apple, to (try to) cut a better deal with Qualcomm ... nothing more, nothing less.

Intel is just a Pawn in all this.
Intel is an insanely good manufacturing company with some of the smartest people in the world.

I think the primary purpose of 5g would be to relieve congestion bottlenecks. Networks get over saturated. I think 5G would help alleviate that. Although the option to get even faster interwebz per user might be another result of 5G, from a provider perspective, they are looking to provide a better user experience in places that become too consumed by network traffic.
 
The bombshell in this article has nothing to do with 5G.

Apple dropping TSMC and using Intel to fab their SOC would be a major strategic win for Apple. I’m sure others will offer more interesting analysis, but Intel’s fab process is second to none, and I’m sure Apple could cut power consumption if they gain access to Intel’s foundries. I’d hate to guess more than a 10% reduction but honestly I’ve no idea.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out!

5G is necessary for tech beyond the smartphone era. These developments aren’t for today’s tech.

Think connected, autonomous cars with large high resolution screens inside. Bandwidth hungry communications for AI. High resolution, streamed VR content. The list is long.

Low latency, high bandwidth is going to enable flow of data and tech that’ll be indistinguishable from magic.
 
Can't wait for 4G/5G to be internet-commodity, and Wifi just just for close-proximity data sharing / transfer.

No more internal routers, DHCP & DNS servers and firewalls.

It all boils down to what the carriers will bill us.
 
Better question is how much faster are you getting with Verizon for the amount you pay, Half a second, 1/4 of a second? I'll enjoy my $35 a month with 5 GB after all taxes and fees thank you ... my extended family has four lines and pays nearly $400 for Verizon and they complain about it all the time, hope you're happy though

Just curious: They complain about price or coverage? I'm thinking of switching, so that is why I am asking.
 
Why doesn’t Apple put in the research to build a cellular chip in-house? Same with displays. They pay out billions of dollars to competitors (Qualcomm and Samsung) for very expensive components.

They already make the A11, M11, Secure Enclave, Face ID, and all of iOS, which are are an order of magnitude more complex than a modem.
A11,M11,Secure Enclave, Face ID etc...controlled and dictated by Apple terms. Modems require versatile compatibility across the globe.

Perhaps it's that people are referring to the successor to 4G, and not necessarily a specific "5G".

Edit: being serious, has 4g finishing rolling cause I often lose my 4g signal while out and I want 4g firmly established before going all in on 5g. not saying apple can't start, just giving my 2 cents

Nope, these companies would much rather push forward with pointless speed gains and leave lots of black spots or dead signal areas..
It’s now 2017, mobile phones have existed since the 70’s 80’s? Almost everyone has one, yet we still have dead signal areas..

I’d much rather have a strong 4G signal, no point blabbing on about super fast speeds I will never get or need.

Apple could do this but there is a Patent minefield standing right in their path. There are literally thousands of patents waiting there for Apple to infringe. I read a report not long after the LTE came out stating that it was next to impossible for a new entrant to come into the market because of the patents standing in their way. Existing players hate each other but know that if one sued another, MAD would be the result.
Just my opinion BTW.
 
Another bad news for Qualcomm. I wonder if they really became greedy or being bullied by Apple and all other giants.

Samsung has announced that the next version of its LTE modem for its Exynos chipsets now supports up to six carrier aggregation (6CA), allowing it to hypothetically reach download speeds of up to 1.2Gbps.

For a brief recap, carrier aggregation is a method where LTE speeds are increased by using multiple LTE bands across the spectrum at the same time, resulting in increased bandwidth speeds. The more bands supported — in Samsung’s case, that’s up from the modem built into the S8’s Exynos 9 processor, which offers 5CA — the higher the theoretical data rate. In other words: while the Galaxy S8 might have been the first gigabit smartphone, its successor could offer up to 20 percent faster data speeds due to the new tech.

It's strange when you read one day about Apple saying it always wishes to create the very best that's technically possible.

Then the following day, just for money/agreement reasons, NOT using the best product but to use something that's ONLY "Sufficient"

If you wish to lead, or wow or be at the top of the game. Just being "Sufficient" is not the place you wish to be.

That's just another term for it's just about good enough to do.
 
Soon 5G to 7G will replace cable or ADSL for home and business users - this will be damn too fast.

Im currently with 4G EE (84Mbps down/17Mbps) and I'm getting faster much faster then cable modem (50Mbps)
