Someone has to tell me why Applecare+ is worth it. It costs $99. You damage your phone and have to pay $49 to replace it.

Without Applecare+, a new phone to replace your damaged one is $199. Plus you get the one year basic warranty.

Someone please give me a reason to buy it. Am I missing something?

Because a replacement phone wouldn't cost $199. That's the subsidized price for a two year contract.

Maybe someone can shed a light on how the wireless companies handle this. If you damage your phone in the first month, do you need to buy a new phone at full price, or do they let you extend your contract for another two years?

what are you talking about?? If you drop your phone in the toilet and don't have Applecare+ your SOL and you will have to pay the UNSUBSIDIZED ($600-$800) price to get a replacement phone.

Applecare+ is a two year extended warranty.

Haha, my fiancé actually did that not long after he got his 3GS. We had to take it to UbreakIfix, and they did an okay job repairing for about $150 but some parts just never worked right again. I will be buying him the Applecare+.

Your SOL...you have to pay full price or get a cheaper phone.

I think andyx3x is talking about out of warranty replacements from apple. The iPhone 4 is $149, the 4s is $199. Check out the support page on apple's site.

Yep! And you don't need to go into the store. They told me as long as I called AppleCare before Nov. 14 I could add it. I usually only get Squaretrade warranties but this was just as good plus I can take it to the apple store and not be without a phone.

Incorrect, replacement of a damaged phone is $199.

I think I am going without it again. After seeing how cheap the replacement screens have gotten I will just fix it myself if I drop mine, again.

Thanks to bytethese for telling me about that. Gonna order a screen to replace my cracked 4 so my wife can use that one until she is eligible for upgrade. :D

Best of luck with that.
I can assure you that you will not get a replacement if the water indicator is triggered or there is obvious damage.

This isn't for damaged phones, there is a water sensor in the phone. If the phone was dropped or got wet it is not covered.

Actually it is for damaged phones. From Apple's warranty site:

Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. However, an iPhone that has failed due to contact with liquid may be eligible for out-of-warranty service.

It is pretty vague though so I guess it's up to some random apple employee's interpretation. Still, if the past is any indicator I'm sure a phone in the toilet can be replaced for $199.

That is not true. The $199 is out of warranty coverage for accidental damage. I had my 3GS replaced after a swim in the lake for the out of warranty cost.

I can tell you from personal experience the will not give you a replacement in either case. Think about it, you drop your phone in water and get a new 64GB phone for $199. They would have a line out the door.

FROM THE FAQ:
Will I have to pay any other charges?
If Apple does not receive your original iPhone within 10 days of shipping the replacement to you, or if Apple receives it and determines that it is ineligible for Out-of-Warranty service, you will be charged a Cover Charge that is the difference between the Replacement Value of a new iPhone and the Out-of-Warranty Service Fee. This is in addition to the ERS Fee and the Out-of-Warranty Service Fee that you paid when requesting service.

Certain damage is ineligible for Out-of-Warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. Please see Apple's Repair Terms And Conditions for further details. Refer to this article to check if the Liquid Contact indicator on your product has been triggered.

Then what's the point of AppleCare+ at $100 over regular AppleCare for $70?

My understanding was that + covers damage you yourself do, like if you drop the phone and break the screen, or yes, drop it in water, while regular AppleCare just covered problems with the phone that aren't due to you, like software malfunctions, endless reboots, headphone issues, etc.

You left out the first part of that section in the FAQ:

An iPhone that is ineligible for warranty service may be eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service. For example, an iPhone that has failed due to damage or liquid damage is ineligible for warranty service but eligible for OOW service. I'm pretty sure the OOW covers liquid contact, even from the toilet.

Applecare+ specifically covers water or other damage. I am talking about the Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service discussed earlier

I have never been able to get a replacement at the Apple store for water damage.

That Knowledge Base Article is titled "iPhone and iPod: Liquid damage is not covered by warranty" Of course it's not, that is why they put the sensors in there, so folks don't go in and say my phone stopped working, I dunno what happened.

We are not talking about Warranty coverage. We are talking about Out Of Warranty Coverage. Of which they clearly state that liquid damage may be covered by out of warranty. Not to mention the fact that I had mine replaced after being submersed in about 12 foot of lake water.

Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications.

If they didn't cover liquid damage, why wouldn't they list it as "catastrophic" damage.

Instead they put this sentence in there...

Applecare is a giant waste of money. Save those dineros for something much better

I have never been able to get a replacement at the Apple store for water damage. I have tried on several occasions. I have 10 iPhones in my plan and have seen pretty much everything. Apple will not replace the phone with water damage.

Not going to argue with you. I've never had an iPhone replaced so I can't speak from experience. Just going off what I've read from Apple's Warranty page and stories I've heard for iPhone owners who have gotten replacements for $199.

wrong FAQ- that is the AppleCare FAQ. Look at out of warranty FAQ- that line is omitted.

only when under warranty. My point is if the phone is out of warranty, this does not apply. Look at the next section. "MY PHONE IS OUT OF WARRANTY"
this language is omitted.

Applecare+ extends your warranty 2 years. The same replacement cost $150 instead of $200 with Applecare+.

You are like talking to a brick wall.
My Phone was Out Of Warranty as in no longer covered by a warranty. My damage was not covered by the warranty even it was still within the warranty period.

My phone took a swim, I took it to a Apple Store, I paid the out of warranty replacement price, I got a new or refurbed phone, I walked away happy.

Just like I am walking away from this argument.

Congrats Sandman, you lucked out.
Apple clearly denies claims with water damage in OOW service terms and refers you to the water damage pdf I linked. I think I'll stick with Apples document over your story.
