The standard 1 year warranty does not cover a cracked screen if the phone is dropped, correct? When my friend dropped her iphone, she was able to get a free replacement after stopping in at the Apple store. Was she just lucky? My girlfriend then dropped hers and tried getting a replacement, but they said they couldn't do it because hers was purchased over a year from the time of the incident. The Manager said if it was still within a year, he would be able to replace it free of charge. She wound up having to pay $80 for a replacement (which wasn't too bad).

My question is this...the way I understand it .... if the phone is dropped and the screen cracks (my main concern) Apples warranty will not cover this. But these 2 situations contradict that. Did my friend and girlfriend just wind up getting lucky with getting a free phone and a (reasonably priced) replacement phone?

I have thought about getting the Apple Care but decided against it since I figured if I did happen to drop my phone in the first year, I would be able to get a replacement. If anything happens after a year, then I'd try to get a refurbished one.

Supposedly Apple is using the new Applecare + to end those instances from here on out.

So it says you can get it for preorders. What about if I buy my phone on Friday at a non Apple store?

what are you talking about?? If you drop your phone in the toilet and don't have Applecare+ your SOL and you will have to pay the UNSUBSIDIZED ($600-$800) price to get a replacement phone.

Applecare+ is a two year extended warranty.

That is false.
At least know some basic info before you respond like that.
You will only have to pay the out of warranty $200 fee.
All posts of this character "digitalfx" about what he thinks its covered under the out of warranty replacement fee on this thread are incorrect. Im surprised the Mods havent deleted his posts for posting false/bad information.

Wait, I thought you had up to a year to add it.......(assuming you didn't throw it into the sun before then).

My posts are based on Apples written policy. Not sure what you are talking about.

AppleCare+ to End Informal Free Replacement Policy for Damaged iPhones [Updated]: https://www.macrumors.com/2011/10/11/applecare-to-end-informal-free-replacement-policy-for-damaged-iphones/

Apple has been reaching out to customers who were unable to order AppleCare+ at the time of their iPhone 4S purchases, noting that customers will have 30 days to visit an Apple retail store to purchase AppleCare+ if they so desire. The company's online store will not support standalone ordering of AppleCare+.

Congrats Sandman, you lucked out.
Apple clearly denies claims with water damage in OOW service terms and refers you to the water damage pdf I linked. I think I'll stick with Apples document over your story.

Ok, I am going back on what I said, about walking away from the argument. However, your snide remark pulled me back in.

The quotes I stated are from an actual Apple webpage.
Or how about this one from the iPhone OOW Replacement Terms and Conditions. It doesn't say anywhere in there that water damage isn't covered. It still states
An Original iPhone that is inoperable due to unauthorized modifications or has failed due to catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, are examples of an iPhone that is ineligible for Out of Warranty Service.
http://images.apple.com/legal/terms/docs/iphone_ars_oow_na_en.pdf

Now if they don't want to cover water damage why in the hell don't they mention it?

They will replace your broken phone that you dropped, or with their discretion as Apple can deny any Out of Warranty, replace your water damaged iPhone with their OUT OF WARRANTY coverage.

What part of :
Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. However, an iPhone that has failed due to contact with liquid may be eligible for out-of-warranty service.

do you not grasp?

Maybe you have had bad luck if you use the same condescending attitude when you walk into an Apple Store. However, I had my iPhone replaced for the Out of Warranty charge. Plenty of people have had their cracked screened iPhones and water damaged phones replaced for OOW charge, and many have had the cracked screen phones replaced for free.

And Look this guy did as well

This digitalfx has no idea what he's talking about. You previously said you had experience but that's a damn lie.

I know someone right this very moment with water damage to their iPhone and she took it the Apple store... they're charging her $100 to replace it.

I had a friend with a broken screen go to the apple store and get it replaced for free.

In case you didn't know, Apple is very lenient on their warranty policy and replacements which is one of the reasons why people are very happy with iPhone.

Will this Applecare+ change things a little as far as free replacements? Maybe.

However, I'm willing to bet the $199 charge will cover most cases of needing to replace an iPhone including liquid damage.

Now shut up and get out your chair and try visiting an Apple store for once in your life... or make some friends who have.

Sandman, your reading the wrong page. That is for a phone still under warranty. Read the section labeled "YOUR PHONE IS OUT OF WARRANTY"
It specifically lists water damage as not covered.

Just wanted to share that anything goes at apple store(pre apple care+).

We had catastrophic ipad 2 w/ all the shattered glass and we got a replacement for free.

I am sure w/ app care+, they will check that you have it and they will replace any damage on most occasion. Just don't be an ass about it..

I also experienced this on 2 separate occasion at apple store. They are super great.. Just don't be an ass about it.. you will be fine.

YEAH but at apple store, their main theme is "we want you to walk out of here happy".. most of the time

My posts are based on Apples written policy. Not sure what you are talking about.

You're not even close with the nonsense you are posting about Apple's out of warranty iphone replacement policy.
So instead why dont you research a little more and educate yourself cause you are posting bad information and if you're doing it intentional you will get banned.

I also take my 2 year old mb which is completely out of warranty. Couple times, I was missing couple screws which they got me(they popped them out of floor model for me since they didn't have one handy)..

and they also service my cousin's 3gs free of charge(no warranty).

I think w/ apple store, they try to at least listen to the customer and 'try' to make things happen for customer no matter what.

I have verizon account w/ 3 lines for 10 years and got NOTHING for free. NOTHING.

No I am not reading the wrong page.

http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=iphone

Under Express Replacement Service -> My Phone is Not Under Warranty it states explicitly

Certain damage is ineligible for Out-of-Warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications.

Then it goes on to discuss water damage. It does NOT say liquid damage is ineligible for OOW service.

Then it links to this PDF http://images.apple.com/legal/terms/docs/iphone_ars_oow_na_en.pdf

Which is the ERS Terms and Conditions and once again it says NOTHING about water damage.

It does state this again
An Original iPhone that is inoperable due to unauthorized modifications or has failed due to catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, are examples of an iPhone that is ineligible for Out of Warranty Service.

Nope, no mention of water damage.

Please try again.

I have had mine replaced for the OOW fee, others have had it replaced as well. Maybe your Karma screws your chances of getting yours replaced.

apple will replace a phone for 199 out of warranty for any reason so applecare + is dumb imo

I deleted my response here. I didn't notice that so many others had already straightened this guy out when I posted it. My response was basically what others have said.

I'll just throw my 2 cents in. Wife washed her 3GS in the laundry machine. It was was past the 1 year warranty. Took it in, got a refurb unit for $199. I'm pretty sure apple will take any broken phone and replace it for $199.

That would be 100% accurate!

For what it's worth, I have also had my iPhone replaced for $199 once the original warranty was up.

$99 for AppleCare+, plus an additional $49 deductible = $148 if you accidentally damage your phone and you need it replaced. If you don't damage it however, you've wasted $99.

Without AppleCare+, you spend $51 more ($199) for out of warranty replacement service and you're out $0 if you don't need the service.

I agree that AppleCare+ does not seem to be a good value vs. the out of warranty replacement service for $199, which also includes replacement due to accidental damage (at least it always has in the past).

First....water damage is catastrophic damage.

Second, I have to believe that something will change or is being missed here.

You're getting 2 years of warranty coverage and 2 accident repairs.

2 accidents will cost $200 total under applecare+, $400 otherwise

After year one, uncovered iphones will cost you some service fee. Covered phone will be free for the second year.

By year three you wont own the phone anymore. So you only really loose on applecare+ if you have no accidents for 2 years although you have had piece of mind.

Also....what about the reports that apple will end its $199 practice....anyone confirm or talk to Apple about the efficacy of the applecare+ ?

These are the facts...

OOW replacement is when you break your phone, whether that be water damage or physical damage, you can this replaced for $199 at the apple store.

IF the phone is broken into multiple pieces, it is considered BER - Beyond Economical Repair and in this case you cannot get it replaced for $199.

If you specifically say you dropped it in the toilet they will not replace it as it becomes a OH&S issue so you will be refused OOW service, if you just drop it in water, it is covered as OOW service for $199.

The simplest way to think of Applecare+ is essentially an insurance that covers you for two accidents with a $50 excess fee for each accident but it also has the benefit of giving you an extra year of warranty to cover for normal warranty which wouldn't incur an excess fee obviously.

These are the facts...

Nice post. The one other fact is that whether to buy AppleCare+ or not is a value judgement each person must make based on their own situation. What "makes sense" for one person isn't necessarily true for another person.
