AppleCare+ for iPhone

One bonus to remember is that when you use your Applecare+ you also are getting a new battery!

And if there are any niggling improvements in hardware during the production cycle, you're also getting those improvements.

So, if something "happens" to your iPhone 5 towards the end of your 2-year coverage, then you'll be very happy about having had the "+" coverage.

You make that sound like you're plan to destroy your phone to collect.

My wife has had her 4S for 10 months and in that time she's had to have it replaced twice due to it not making phone calls and then not connecting to wifi. My sense is that a device as compact and portable as these phones are just going to break regardless of how pretty a case you have on it. We don't have AppleCare for the 4S but have ordered it for the 5 and I see it more than worth it.

Question, if you have applcare+/Square Trade/etc, and end up getting a replacement, is it usually a refurb, or a brand new phone?

Apple will always use a refurb to replace unless there are no refurbs, then you will get a new phone. This sounds way worse than it actually is though since with a refurb the only potentially used components are the ones inside excluding the battery. Every single piece you come into contact with ( housing, home, power, volume buttons, screen, ) and battery are brand new components. Failure rate with a refurb I have to image is also slightly lower than a new one considered the internal refurb components are tested before usage guaranteeing they will work theoretically. Its also important to note that if a phone is sent in with water damage absolutely NO components will be used out of it and it's recycled.
