This is generally how taxation works. If there is no tax, people consume more. If there is a tax and an increase, people pay attention and purchase/consume what is necessary.

Welcome to the higher Apple Tax :p:D

Yup, price increases seem more frequent than they used to be. Maybe Apple has saturated their potential market and so instead of organic growth, they have to rely on price increases to maintain their share price growth.

LOL, My budget McIntosh Apple.

If you think Apple stuff is expensive, you should check out the price of McIntosh gear haha.

Remember when the iPad was a nice to have secondary device around the house for entertainment purposes. This is one expensive Netflix machine of a Pro device that does not support multi-user accounts... Lol, Apple has lost touch with reality, this is some RDF pricing.

LOL, this is the iPad PRO, not the Netflix Safari and gaming regular iPad they still offer.

For $US649 I can buy a brand new iPad 2018 6th-gen 128GB with cellular and have change for a great many things!

Yes, but the iPad Pro is more MacBook Air/base MBP than iPad. They are now extremely powerful given their size. The GPU performance I just saw today is extraordinary. I'm a gamer and this matches or is at least super close to the vanilla PS4 from 2013 with an octa-core AMD Jaguar APU with 8 GB GDDR5 RAM putting out 1.84 TFLOPS and 176 GB/s bandwidth.

We have to wait for benchmarks and actual numbers but if what Apple has said about it being close to the Xbox One S, this means this GPU meets or destroys the Radeon Pro 460, 560 and possibly even the 560X. If they really accomplished this then Apple will soon dump Intel and AMD GPUs on their MBPs period. If they can get this sort of performance out of such a low power part, just imagine what they can do with a 45W part.

I knew one day these Apple SoCs would come close to current gen console performance but I just didn't think it would be so soon!

Let’s just be honest , these things are not meant to be repaired - that is not good for the environment though :(

I do find the environmental element of these keynotes to be hypocritical, given any damage results in a new device . The energy / resources wasted to refurb these / transport , is not what I would call a green solution .

excellent news! i've always felt applecare+ was way too cheap for the quality it provides.

You are happy to pay more for insurance? With a good chance you will never actually utilise any of its features ?

...and soon to follow with their own price increase....all the other computer manufacturers.
This is NUTS!!!

It doesn't work like that. Same thing when people say imagine what A12 could do if it wasn't constricted by housing. Again it doesn't work like that.

When it comes to console gaming you really have to forget about the benchmarks and trust your eyes to see that mobile GPUs are no where near consoles when it comes to real life application.

Lol, a PRO tablet, really. I have the 2017 iPad Pro 12.9” and guess what I do both professional and consumer related tasks on it. Since it is a tablet I do not compromise on the display and the 2018 iPad does unfortunately.

What do you call a PRO tablet? Pencil/Stylus support, well the 2018 iPad has that. KB, well either Smart Connector or BlueTooth. No mouse support, you can call a tablet PRO all you want considering the OS at present is limited. Yep same iOS runs on both the PRO and 2018 iPad model. FaceID will make its way to the other iPad lines in the coming year, it is not a PRO feature, consider iPhone XS and XR. 2019 iPad will support Apple Pencil 2 new method of charging, attaching and features. E2E screen will also make it way down the iPad line. I prefer the 120Hz refresh rate, laminated screen and quad speakers.

Seems all work and no play has made someone grumpy :p:D

I know it will not exactly match a stock PS4/Xbox One S but it will look close on the iPad display. The level of detail I just saw in NBA 2K was extremely similar to late PS3/early PS4. The definition of the crowd, higher res textures everywhere, more fluid animations and smooth gameplay.

I'm not saying that we'll see games like Uncharted 4, Bloodborne or GTA V on iPad Pro anytime soon. It's not that simple to port 50-80GB x86-64 DX11,12 and OpenGL games to ARM and Metal. It would take a whole team, lots of time and they would have to charge at least $30-40 and most people are not willing to pay that much for a mobile port.

Remember what Epic managed to do with the A4 with Infinity Blade 1? That was the Unreal 3 engine and the quality of the graphics wasn't very far off from what you would see in Gears of War 1. Of course there is no free movement nor running but even with those compromises, it is still a gorgeous game and will always be considered a breakthrough for mobile gaming. After playing that I expected future mobile games to be more AAA than Zynga but I was wrong. The freemium model really killed hardcore games on iOS. Hopefully this changes in the future as these SoC GPUs get stronger and stronger.

It’s just got to the point where lots of customers might pony up the cash, but massively elongate their ownership time. I plan to keep my current crop of Apple products until they’re no longer usable.

Funny thing is that most of them were using pre-2016 MBP.

Because they are still good enough for ordinary people's needs. Only professional and enthusiast video editors, photographers, 3d artists, architects, programmers and the like need or benefit from top of the line machines.
Consumers will keep those MBPs and MBAs until they start struggling with the daily tasks they use them for. Once web browsing and new versions of productivity software becomes sluggish on those machines they will definitely upgrade.

Contrary to popular belief, many rich and professional people don't just buy new stuff every single year for the hell of it. You would be surprised at the amount of journalists who still use an older iPhone 6 or 7. Many using older MBAs and Pros as well. It's only now in 2018 that I'm starting to see more and more newer MBPs around both IRL and on TV.

This is what I tend to do as well. I get about 5-6 years of use out of every iPhone and iPad. After 2-3 years I just give them to my mom when I buy a new one. She doesn't need the latest features nor performance. Even though these products are expensive they are extremely reliable, well built and are supported for a very long time.

If there is one thing I have learned, it is get AC+ with their current pricing. The OOW repair cost are out of control. Macs it is an absolute must.
Funny enough, i've never bought one for any of my apple products. Not even my macs. Its completely unnecessary to me.

Never needed AppleCare for any of my devices, if one does there are more affordable options.

I agree, i look at the pro's and love the laminated screen, the tru tone the promotion, but for what i use an iPad for as a consumption device there is no way to justify the price tag, so i'll stick with my 2017 iPad for now, hell fixing it out of warrantee is almost twice the cost of what you can buy the 207 iPad for, simply madness.

apple is about to price out a generation of users. between this, the new iPhones...an extra $50 here, $100 there...

yeah well i went with the xs max 256gb, at least i can pay monthly so its almost a lease and i can justify it because it really gets used a lot daily, an iPad i just don't use enough to justify more than the basic ones

Why does Tim Cook hate working class people?

Yeah average-income people are being priced out of latest generation stuff.

2016:

iPhone 7: $649
MacBook Air: $999
Apple Watch Series 2: $369
iPad Pro 12.9: $799
Total: $ 2,816

2018:

iPhone XR $769
MacBook Air: $1,199
Apple Watch Series 4: $399
iPad Pro 12.9: $999
Total: $ 3,366

20% more for comparatively the same stuff. No explanation really other than Apple hating poor people.

Nah, buying Apple products frequently will make the “average” consumer poor faster. Seriously beautiful products released today, however not indicted to purchase any of them.

Apple does not want people to upgrade annually, by increasing the price people will use their devices longer and Apple can claim its Environmentally Green prize. Is this not evident to people.

Not when they do everything they can to ensure the products have a limited lifespan. Whether it's locking down all the hardware, ending support while making it difficult to repair, soldering components, underspec'ing some parts so the device ages prematurely, software updates that mysteriously bog down your device, etc etc... :p

Apple says the device you purchase today will last you for X years, if anything goes wrong with it only we can fix it to manufacturers spec and after its lifespan is near its end that we decide, we will recycle it for you.

Basically you are leasing your iOS devices more than your macOS devices. Apple thinks users are dunderheads when it comes to doing basic repairs and upgrades, plus all your data belongs to Apple Servers :p:D

Apple has become the very things it was against, 1984

You don’t think that the fact that nobody else offers comparable insurance at a lower price to be indicative of the fact that they aren’t overcharging?

This is a red herring. Apple wants to be the sole provider for insurance. They can command whatever they want because they can. It certainly does not mean they are not overcharging.

What do you mean? Just because they “want to” doesn’t mean they can. They do have competitors. None of them cover accidental damage for anywhere near the AppleCare plus price, because they would all lose money.

Do you not believe in economics?

I have never bought Apple Care and also never needed it so technically I am quids in, probably to the tune of enough money to buy the latest Air....without AppleCare Also :)

Nonsense. There is no evidence to support your claim.

However Apple's upgrade program is just one piece of damning evidence to support the otherwise widely accepted reality, that they do want you to upgrade as often a financially possible.

https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program

That is why they feel the need to make incremental and largely insignificant improvements to the iPhone every year. If they wanted to improve the environment, they would surely go to a bi-annual basis? Especially when we are at a point in hand held technology when those devices are generally faster these days, than the content it was originally designed to consume and that all products sold in the EU should be warranted to work for 2 years minimum.
