You have to pay to play folks. It's as simple as that. If another $500 is going to break you, you shouldn't be buying the VP to begin with.

Bowing out of this copium distribution center. “…are soon parted”.
I’ll be over here getting…let’s be generous about how much better the screens are…60-70% of the experience for 1/10th the price.

And by "express" apple means 4 days, speaking from experience!
And dont forget, BEFORE they send you a replacement you have to draw your creditcard again.
And once MORE pay the total amount, before they send you a 'free' replacement.
But they do promise you get you second payment back when they recieved your old set, within 5 days.
In my case that was 24 days.

Still happy to self-fund any repair or replacement costs down the track. The money I've saved by not buying AppleCare with any of my Apple devices over the past 20+ years easily pays for a full replacement of an AVP.

Doesn't cover loss or theft from the looks of things. How are people planning to deal with that? Take the risk, or buy some other insurance for it?

Well I plan on using this sitting on the sofa or in bed, that’s it. So I skipped getting Apple care.

This is definitely not the same Apple from decades ago when Steve Jobs was at the helm.

Not saying that's a bad thing; in fact overall Apple is great... but $500 for something you'll statistically never use, WOW.

It's great as a shareholder, I'm buying a lot this week as Apple has been down, although they are up yesterday and today. Not so much as consumer, that's why I don't buy Apple anymore.

After the warranty expired? So unlucky
The first one broke 1 week after the warranty expired. The second one broke and was fixed 4 times within the first year since its purchase and finally Apple replaced it on the 5th repair. What I want to say is that, to me, it feels like the quality of products is not that great, so AppleCare becomes more like a need rather than a luxury.

THat's why it is insurance - a hedge against a higher loss. If you can afford the loss then don't buy it. It's a persona financial decision.

It could mean that they are expecting a larger degree of hardware faults (or accidents in general) with this new product branch.

I suspect they are looking at the expected uptake vs failure rate and associated costs and trying to balance it out.

Get the monthly AppleCare+, look at Post#19.
This way it will not expire on you.

If it is like other AC+ you can extend after the initial 2 or 3 year period.

Ah, good to know! I'll look at the small print on my policy then to make sure mine does

You may want to look into a personal articles floater to cover it, or possible get oe form another company so you don't take a claim hit on your homeowner's policy.

Falls of your head for some reason, you bump into something; yeah, this device is something you will want to pay for AC. Because you know it's going to cost big $$$s to repair it without. And Apple will cite user misuse on this often regarding repairs.
