On the line with a support rep in agreements now and being told that I am NOT eligible for the upgrade despite having a MacBook Pro 15" purchased in February of 2017. She is checking a senior supervisor. Seems they are giving VERY inconsistent information w/ customers tonight.

Incorrect. AppleCare is within a year. AppleCare+ is 60 days. Says right under AppleCare+ for Macs.

Show me how my statement was incorrect when the person I quoted was referring to AppleCare and not AppleCare+. Checkmate.

Just spoke with the supervisor and she said that ONLY Macs purchased within the last 60 days are eligible for the AppleCare+ upgrade from the AppleCare Protection Plan. I asked her about the reports on social media tonight of being calling in and getting the existing agreement refunded and a new AppleCare+ agreement in place with the same termination date, and she said this was absolutely false and is not happening.

Incorrect. You can purchase Apple Care within 12 months of purchasing the device.

"You can buy the AppleCare Protection Plan within one year of the purchase of your device. Learn more about the benefits of the AppleCare Protection Plan for your Mac, Apple Display, or your Apple TV."

This has changed, adding accidental coverage after a year would be too good to be true otherwise.

As stated above, I thought you were speaking about the regular AppleCare and not AppleCare+. The former most definitely can be purchased within the 12 months of purchase, while the latter cannot.

Process is to refund the coverage that was still on the machine. Then purchase the new agreement at the new terms that include the damage coverage.
I now have the updated plan that covers accidental damage.

When did you purchase your Mac? I called in tonight and was told that I wasn't eligible on a MacBook Pro 15" w/ Touchbar that I purchased in February of this year.

I just asked in chat with a rep and she said I CAN still get the AppleCare plan at an EDU price, but there is no way to allow the accidental plan after 60 days.

She said she could help me set up the purchase. When I go to the verify page I get a loop of "Click to learn more" and never get the option to "Learn more and buy now" like it says I should.

Not sure how I feel about this. I guess I'll have to check out the plan's details.

No exception outside of the 60-day purchase is what I'm also being told tonight. They are not giving this out retroactively even if you're OK with paying the delta between AppleCare Protection and AppleCare+ like I am.

Interesting. I got my 15" about 66 days ago, I think. I suppose that's at least good for a side-glance chuckle.

I purchased an MBP a month back with college student deal that bundles an AC plan with $100 off. Meh. Guess I'm stuck. If I wanna go with upgrade I will have to fork that $100 back in.

Yup, kind of silly. I emailed Tim Cook to see if he can clarify what the exception is and how it applies retroactively since support seems to be telling people different things tonight. Will post a response if I get one.

False, this is now changed today to 60 days. if you look at the website pages for the Apple Protection Plan+
(all applecare plans are now Applecare+, where as before, Applecare+ was for iphones/pads/pods/watch and Applecare was for computers/laptops/desktops/apple TV)

because All apple products are now going to be covered under Applecare+. the original Applecare that was eligible for MacBooks, desktops, apple TV ETC, is now no longer going to be sold. it will all be Applecare+

Sorry Guys, I'm miffed too but I don't think we can get coverage on our 61+ day old Macs. I never though Apple would offer Accidental but it looks like you will pay dearly for it (but much cheaper than a replacement Mac).

It pays to be an early adopter .

"adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other damage."

This sounds spectacularly vague. Accidental damage? Screen damage? External enclosure damage? Does it cover blown power-supplies because of a bad power surge? Does it cover "accidental" water exposure/damage? It sounds like it's highly subjective, based on the person you talk to.

Yeah, it sounds like there is essentially a deductible for the accidental plan. If I can still get the old plan for my usual edu price then I'm happy.

I manage a Mac lab at work, so those are covered under insurance and I'm not worried about those. In all of the Macs I've had over the years I've...oh, god, am I seriously going to say this?...never had an accident with one (now I'm jinxed for sure).

Perhaps the sky isn't falling for me.

If it makes you feel any better, accidental damage is thousands-fold more likely to happen on a mobile device than on a pc... risk is further reduced to almost zero if you want to cover your keyboard.

I'm going to be like Mr. Wonderful and summarize here...

AppleCare+ is the new norm, and MUST be added within 60 days of original purchase. Allegedly, there is an EDU discount down to $259... though this is not yet reflected on the online EDU store.

AppleCare IS STILL AVAILABLE at the moment... and more importantly, CAN BE ADDED WITHIN 12 MONTHS of the original purchase. Even if you were unable to get a special link from Apple to purchase, there are several 3rd party sources where these can still be purchased.

Thanks. So only a $10 discount now, compared to the old $66 discount? (this is solely for 13" and smaller laptops, not the 15")

Sorry, my price quote of $259 is specifically for the 15" MacBook Pro. So $20 more than the $239 it used to be. I imagine the 13" would be similar.

Gotcha. I did a test purchase using the EDU store, and it still shows $269 for the 13"? I guess they haven't fed the prices yet. I feel bad for those students who purchased their MBPs yesterday/today and thought they got a discount from AppleCare+.

This is needlessly confusing, IMHO.

I chatted support and was able to get a link to buy the old protection plan.

Buy it from B&H. They should still have them. I got my regular AppleCare from them for $299 for the 15" touchbar. If you're outside NYC you pay no tax.

Apple Online Store Customer Service representative,

You should brush up on your policies, procedures, practices, and (most importantly) products. I purchased a MacBook Pro 15inch in December 2016 and was able to purchase, today, Apple Care. Apple Care+ may be the new norm for all NEW Apple products moving forward, but the 12 month window for Apple Care still applies as evidenced by other forum members who have purchased it recently as well as my purchase of it today. So, your statement that "[a]ll apple products are now going to be covered under Applecare+" is wrong and misinforming others around here who would otherwise rely on your title.

Granted, you could have completely misread all of my posts and incorrectly assumed that I was speaking about Apple Care +, but you will see "+" was not mentioned anywhere in my posts nor was it mentioned in response to anyone.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,

Someone familiar with Apple's products :)

I was told the same by AppleCare support on the phone. Having got my 15" MBP on March 2017 I was still in disbelief however. I went to the Apple Store today, and sure enough, the Apple Store associate was able to ring me up for AC+. It took a while (probably because I was trying to pay with Apple Pay with my AWS2 for the first time) but it went through no problem.

I refunded it when I got back because I noticed that AC+ is $349 with Education discount ($379 normally), but I spoke with a senior advisor who assured me that even though I am cancelling my AC+ that she will restore it for me with the Edu discount when I get my money back.

So in short, it doesn't hurt to walk up to an Apple Store to get AppleCare+. There's a chance you'll get denied, but I was able to get it.
