Actually I never know I get can a replacement until I sent it into my local AppleStore and the lady called me after two days if I am fine if they replace a new MBP for me. I think I should have called AppleCare to ask for replacement before sending it into Apple Store for replacement eh? (In order to obtain a higher-spec MBP!)

are you paying for the the high res upgrade, or did they provide that gratis? Kinda wish I had upgraded, but I am honestly broke as a joke for the foreseeable future as a med student with a new baby and my wife not working anymore. If I did have the money, I would have def upgraded though.

Yea, I paid £80 for the Hi-Res upgrade. The lady just don't allow me to upgrade for free!

good to know. i think you will be glad you upgraded though. Does that upgrade make your order a CTO, and push your shipping date back? Thats one big plus for me is that since I just got the base model with no upgrades, I should have a new machine quicker, which wont interfere with my finals.

Yea, it did makes my MBP BTO/CTO, so it will gonna travel half the world before arriving in the UK. And yet, it is a replacement unit so I aint sure if they priortise the one who paid for it.

based on what the OP has said, yes...they will give you a 17 if you need the express card slot.

I MIGHT consider it after I got my replacement on hand because I am not really satisfied with the specs of the replacement MBP I got from the AppleStore, with respect to the specs of my Early-2008 MBP. We will see... ;)

Thanks for the informatioN!

Hmmm... In that case, I should tell them I need ExpressCard 3/4 so they will replace me with an 17"? :D

i didn't even have to ask for a 17,thats what they tried to upgrade me to automatically. I had to sign a waiver saying i was ok giving up that feature in order to get the 15" model

Ah, really! The lady told me the ONLY MODEL I can get is the base 15" or just get my hard drive repaired and close the case. :(
She never mentioned about my eligibility to get the 17" at all. Btw, why are you choosing the mid-range 15" instead of the high-spec 15"? I thought if you said 17" is too large for you, they might have just give you the top-spec 15"... :apple:

the high end 15 doesn't offer any features i had that the low end 15 didn't have. I actually asked, the guy laughingly told me i was being greedy. A 17 in just isn't practical for a college student.

Hahahahaha... I think he just revealed our intention! *Humph* But then we, college student just want to get the best thing (for free =x), aint we? :p
I might have something to argue for my 15" high-end early-2008 MBP though - 512MB nVidia graphics! But I doubt I will be successful in getting the high-end MBP. :(
Anyway, to be honest, even the base model is already A LOT BETTER than my Early-2008 top-spec MBP, so I am satisfied; but just that I want to try and ask if I can get the 17" if I want the ExpressSlot 3/4. :D

i would think 512 graphics should bump you up. They compare ram to make sure you get the correct amount. Even though the speed is different between the two models, so graphics are probably the same. good luck

I think and hope that the Applecare fella has got the same thinking as we do! I will first start off with 17" first then slowly divert to the 512mb graphics. ;-)

Thanks for the wish mate! Cheers.

I have a mid-08 15in MBP, am having some new problems, and was curious if you all might think it warrants a replacement yet...technically it has only been in twice now for repair, but this will make it the third time. So far I've had my superdrive, logic board (nvidia 8600m GT), keyboard and top case replaced. Currently I have a right speaker that needs to be repaired and my screen is flickering constantly (thinking a loose connection). My guess is they'll fix it this time, and perhaps I'll be up for a replacement after that?

@Jwalker9 In a similar boat, I'm also a med student who needs this computer to last me another 2 years at least...

I'm not a medstudent yet. but i'm pre-med. I take the mcat in 13 days
When you call, you should ask to speak to someone about a replacement. They probably won't replace it, but but but, make sure they document that you asked for a replacement, because the next time you send it in, you will probably get a replacement.

I have a 13" white macbook from 2007, MacBook3,1. It was the mid range one back then when they had 3 white MB models. does anyone know if apple will replace it with the low end MBP or the white MB?

i feel like that one has firewire(the one you have) and the new one doesn't. So they would have to give you the new 13 in macbook pro. Assuming that i'm right.

cool, thanks! just wondering. however, my MB has been running fine, never had a problem. altho i do wish it... *cough* :p

Thanks. Yeah, I escalated my case when I called in January after my speaker went out, but they didn't offer a replacement yet, of course. At least I made my case known. Wonder if I should try calling this time, or just ask to speak to a manager at the store...in any case, it won't be for another 3 weeks until I'm done with finals.

Good luck on the mcat, it seems hard now, but just wait til med school! :p I take Step 1 in 2 months.

May 28th here. I worried about sending in my old mbp because i do usmle world questions every night, but my wife let me borrow her macbook until the new mbp arrives. Good luck on the mcat and step 1 guys.

Hey guys,

I'm wondering if any of you have ever seen a copy of Apple's policy, and not just heard about it over the phone?

My experience with AppleCare has been fantastic overall, but finding out about this "no feature loss allowed" does leave me with a sour taste in my mouth.

My pre-unibody 15" (with an express card slot) was replaced by Apple (yay!) to a unibody version. In my original email, and several times over the phone I asked for a refurbished 15" because I wanted to keep the ec slot. I was told that they couldn't do that, and if I wanted an ec slot I'd have to pay $500 to upgrade to the 17".

At the time I wasn't able to afford that so I settled on the 15" and have been using a express card to usb cord. Honestly, it sucks. Transfer speed has dropped significantly and since I use it all the time, it really kills my performance.

I'm hoping that with this "no feature-loss" policy in hand I can get my machine replaced again with either a super-old with-ec 15" or a new 17". So far simply explaining my self doesn't work.

Cheers!

I've never actually seen the policy. Sorry. All i have is a copy of the legal document that i had to sign, that basically said it was ok to give up some features that i couldn't get unless i got the 17 in. My advice would be, if you aren't happy with the replacement they gave you, ask to speak with a supervisor. Also, i think in the applecare agreement that comes with your applecare, it talks about the specifics for how replacements will work.

^^^yeah dude, that is pretty ballsy. Like i said earlier, I am just happy to be getting a new base model 15 inch i5. I had the mid tier 2.4 SR MBP, which pretty much matches dead on with what the base model offers, so thats what they paired me with as the most like-to-like match. I just use the thing for school and home stuff, so I really dont need an i7 that will drain my battery more for a speed difference that I wont notice. I just got my fed-ex shipping label in the email, so I am backing up this one, and will be dropping it off at fed-ex tonight for an early morning pick up. Supposedly, once the box is in fed-ex's possession, my new one will be officially prepared for shipping from apple.

I had a 2.4 Penryn same computer and I'm getting the same replacement. They really ship the computer once the shipping company has possession of the old one? What if you send them a dud lol. I was so sad sending away my old MacBook pro box but I couldn't find any other suitable packing materials :( I wonder if Apple would get mad if one just sent them a MacBook pro in a poorly packed box ready to fall apart when it arrived to them.

they told me it didn't really matter how i mailed it in, just as long as it got there. So i just wrapped it in bubblewrap and mailed it in.
