thats exactly what i was hoping to hear. I was authorized for replacement in February as well. I'll be giving them a call tomorrow hoping for the same thing. I'm going to push for the base line 15 with the antiglare screen, since thats basically what i have now. I don't really want to push for the 17 inch, just to gain the expresscard. The 17 in. is just to big to carry around school with me.

The antiglare you may be able to ask for, but there is no way they'll issue you a 17" unless you pay the difference.

Nonetheless, good luck.

Actually, if you have a MBP with an Expresscard slot their "like-for-like" replacement system TRIES to give you the 17". My first replacement actually got hung up because of this. I'm scanning the release doc now to send back saying I understand I'll have "feature loss" by them giving me a 15" i7.

I was very firm that I wanted the 15" and the i7 and that's what I'm getting. In fact for my trouble I'm also getting the MDP to Dual-Link DVI adapter and a remote now.

Huh?

Most people fly in here and say "Apple replaced my Macbook Pro!!1!1!" and we of course ask from what to what, and they say "my old non unibody MacBook pro with the 8600 to a BRAND NEW (gasp) 15 inch BASE unibody MacBook pro" which, prior to the revision, is a downgrade because of the lack of discreet graphics on the base unibody. Then there is about two pages of Convo asking us how to prove to Apple that they are being injured if they get a base unibody. I firmly doubt the 17 inch is being offered as standard fare.

i edited your quote for what i was going to answer. Hope thats ok. It looks like you should be able to get a replacement. But heres what happened to me

Well... In early january. i got a new pair of really really expensive in ear monitors. JH 13's if any of you know what those are. I plugged them into my laptop because i didn't have an external sound card at the time. I then noticed that my laptop sound card makes this evil hissing noise, with the headphones, i then tested it and it makes it through anything that is plugged into it. (not just the new headphones) I had never noticed since i always use optical out. So i sent it to apple.

The first time, they replaced:
Logic Board
Left In/out
GPU (they said it would fail if they didn't replace it)
Harddrive
some other random stuff, a fan as well i believe

4 days after i got it back, it started doing that again, and it wouldn't reformat the new hard drive or burn cds, so off it went to apple. They replaced:
Logic board
GPU (they once again told me it was an affected unit...)
superdrive
left in/out
harddrive

So i got the computer back, and the 2nd new hard drive clicks like crazy, and the sound is still terrible. lol. So i called and told them i had lost faith in my computer surviving, if after 4 days they had to replace over $1000 in computer parts (if i had to pay for it), how was this computer supposed to last me my last year of college. yada yada yada. so they told me to call and ship it back to them when i finish my semester of college, (i couldn't give up my laptop at the time), and they would send me a replacement.

The GPU is integrated into the motherboard (logic board) If you need a new GPU, they must replace the logic board. If you need a new logic board, they then give you a new GPU and CPU, as these two components are soldered into the logic board.

^^^yeah dude, that is pretty ballsy. Like i said earlier, I am just happy to be getting a new base model 15 inch i5. I had the mid tier 2.4 SR MBP, which pretty much matches dead on with what the base model offers, so thats what they paired me with as the most like-to-like match. I just use the thing for school and home stuff, so I really dont need an i7 that will drain my battery more for a speed difference that I wont notice. I just got my fed-ex shipping label in the email, so I am backing up this one, and will be dropping it off at fed-ex tonight for an early morning pick up. Supposedly, once the box is in fed-ex's possession, my new one will be officially prepared for shipping from apple.

Actually, they tried to issue me a new i5 17 in. as a replacement for my 07 santa rosa. I had to fax them back a waiver of liability saying it was ok with me not to get expresscard.
Basically, the guy just went through every single thing on the list and was like do you use your dvi port. I said yes, because i do. He said apple will send me the duel link dvi adapter for free then. He then upgraded me to the HD antiglare for free, because glossy was an option on mine and its antiglare now.

I only had 2 months left on my applecare as well. So i'm going to prorate it and buy a full two year extension on my new machine. I can't wait, I'm pumped for my new machine.

17 in is only standard to be issued if you had an expresscard slot on your previous macbook pro. Because its the only one that has this feature. But you have to tell them its a feature you'd like in your replacement. Most people fail to do this.

Sorry Eddie - I can only communicate my real world experience on the Phone with Ian from Apple today - can't help "people" flying in saying whatever or previous instances of similar situations :) .

Ian tried to give me the 17" base model (i5) because it was the closest they had to my original "feature set" and there would be "Feature Loss" with the 15". I told Ian "on Tuesday Bob had already said I get the 2.66 i7 15" because I upgraded to the 2.6 (top spec) CPU on my old box and I already told Bob the express card is not important to me. I want to stay in the 15" form factor with the top spec CPU. That's what I was told on Tuesday and that's what I expect to ship."

He put me on hold and came back saying the i7 is good to go. He also added a remote (since my original had that) and the Dual Link DVI adapter. I had to deal with some crap but at least I got $120 of accessories out of it.

At this point once they said they would replace my MBP I've been offered

1.) 2.66 15"
2.) Base model 17"

The base model 15" has never even been put on the table. I'll also point out APPLE was the one that put both of these on the table as suggestions - the first dude brought up my processor upgrade and the i7 so I ran with it. The second guy mentioned he HAD to do the 17" because of their "like-for-like" system. I did not go into this looking for an i7 or a 17" - they suggested both. I just wanted a Mac that doesn't freeze up/spaz out/black out like the one I've had for the last 2 1/2 years does. Now I will say that once the i7 was on the table there was no way they were taking it away - I told the guy today I wasn't looking for a compromise - I was looking for the replacement they spec'ed out for me on Tuesday. That's what I got.

I have a 2008 15" MBP and this machine is nothing but
trouble. The graphics card that Apple put in this thing is
truly terrible. My MBP is truly a lemon.

I can't believe I paid $2000+ for this thing! I'm glad as
hell that I bought Applecare though, because I would be
more angry otherwise.

I wonder what % of people who bought an MBP in 2008
have been screwed by the nvidia graphics card and its
overheating and other problems!

The funny thing is that my significant other has the exact
same machine as I do and has had no problems with her
machine, but I've had to endure numerous logic board
replacements already and my MBP is already on the fritz
again.

When Apple authorizes a replacement, how do they notify
you of this? Do they send you an e-mail? Do you have to
specifically ask for it?

I might inquire about a replacement, but I'd much prefer
a laptop with an expresscard slot in the 15" size and it sucks
that Apple doesn't make those anymore. The 17" laptops
are just too big and too heavy for me.

^^ lol *EF* W***O* i'm not doubting your experience, just what i've seen.

It's all good though. I will definitely push for a 17" when mine kicks the bucket (chants "one more repair"). Enjoy your nu machine :D

BTW You might want to take your name out just cuz.

Thanks - done.

Just FYI when you go to have the GPU tested - WORK IT HARD. My last card (logic board 3 - LB3 from now on) started acting up and I took it in. LB3 passed on two occasions after the issues started. Right before I took it in for LB3 test 3 I ran nVidia Geoforms in a Windows VM though fusion, started 2 1080p videos, ran xbench over and over, and just opened images from lightroom into photoshop.

LB3 did not pass test three. ;)

My C2D 8600m box started freezing again last weekend. Took it to the repair center that's fixed it twice (logic boards) before to have it tested and it failed. They said just call Apple and they gave me the error code. Called Apple, spoke with level one support who very quickly transferred me to a supervisor to initiate a replacement. This was Tuesday at 2:00pm and they were already giving the CURRENT MODEL as a replacement.

I have a 2.66 i7 15" on the way right now. They let me upgrade to the high res antiglare for the $150 as well.

I could not be happier with the way the thing turned out - 3 year upgrade for $150...

Technically you are violating the agreement by talking about it. I'd be careful if I was you O.O

Anyway, I think they do replacements because it avoids class actions, which prolly cost them alot more than replacement laptops. Also it retains a customer, and likely turns them into the biggest Apple fan of all time. Plus they can prolly bill NVIDIA for it all :D

Still, can I get a "hell yeah!!" ?? :D

Wow - totally missed the confidentiality part :) - thanks for the heads up.

Still - I'll reply with a whispered "Hell Yeah" with hopes big Apple won't notice...

i never got any paperwork to sign at all, just a phone call from my customer relations rep to finalize the arrangement. I dropped off the box at 10pm last night at fedex, and just got an email saying my order has been placed and it will be shipped in <24 hours. Cant wait

congrats man. My replacement is CTO, so i have to wait 7 to 10 business days. Argh.

what number are you guys calling?
or who do you ask to speak to?

just the standard apple care number, but I had a case going already that had been escalated straight to senior level, so that helped. When i went to peach mac, an authorized reseller that did many of my repairs, they thought my asking for a replacement was valid, and told me to call apple care, and if I couldn't get my case escalated, to ask for customer relations. These guys are the big dogs. He said he could get in trouble for telling me that information, but that these people are the ones to talk to when you are pissed off, and they are there to keep you as a satisfied customer. They have the authority to offer replacements, and have been known to bend over backward to get in your good graces after negative experiences.
Hope that helps!

i talked to a rep through the macmall online chat two days ago and she told me to call in and said she also suggests "escalation."
what does that mean exactly?

just means that your case is passed on to a senior support specialist...these are not the people who initially take your call and try and troubleshoot your issues, but the secondary or even tertiary level of support. Pretty much means you are calling and asking to speak to the manager.

so is that what you do when you want a replacement?
ask to speak to the senior support specialist?

if you say you want a replacement, and the initial call answerer looks at your history and thinks you may have a valid request, i think they are happy to pass you on to the next level. Why are you wanting a replacement? Spill the details. Is it a Santa Rosa?

When i called. I just called the basic applecare line, and explained my problem to the first person i talked to. I told them what the history of my computer is. I then told her i'd feel more comfortable with a replacement. She asked me why i would like one, that she agreed that i might have a case and that i should talk to someone in customer relations, and it went from there.

P.S. Apple finalized my replacement yesterday at 2:00 o'clock. I received the mini displayport to dual link dvi adapter and the remote today via 1 day air. Talk about service.

Actually I never know I get can a replacement until I sent it into my local AppleStore and the lady called me after two days if I am fine if they replace a new MBP for me. I think I should have called AppleCare to ask for replacement before sending it into Apple Store for replacement eh? (In order to obtain a higher-spec MBP!)

if the replacement you get, doesn't have one of the specs that your last one had, such as antiglare. Just call applecare and they will take care of it.
