All make sense. Mavericks later this month (most likely right at the end) and then (as Schizoid said a couple of posts back) the new Mac Pro to follow in November.

If it wasn't for the fact that I desperately need to upgrade my 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 and the new Pro will ship with it, I'm not entirely sure I'd want to upgrade the OS if I wasn't also updating the computer. There's not that much in there that's any different. OK. Snow Leopard had little changes from a user's perspective, but there were massive changes under the hood that made the upgrade worthwhile. That's not the case with Mavericks (although I suspect I shall be told otherwise any minute now )

Is this really the main thing that keeps you excited about this launch?

Please adopt me... please (or if anyone needs a cook or what have you, I'll work for free). I miss the UK and Germany... reaaalllly miss.

How crazy would it be if Apple, at the last minute, showed off an OS X redesign to somewhat match iOS 7?

I'm not saying this would necessarily be good or bad, and I don't see it happening, but they did do a similar thing with Leopard (showed the OS early and the new design later).

I also think that it could be done tastefully, kind of like this:

I do like it.

No new Mac Pro at end of October. But they will replay the "Coming later this fall" ad. Remember "fall" does not end until 12/21...so that is the absolute last day they could still present it and not be called out. :(

However, they could "just" present it on 12/20 and say they are taking pre-orders with actual availability "next spring". So conceivably it could be up to ONE YEAR since we first saw it as the last day of spring is in June 2014.

This would also fit the pace at which Mac Pro development seems to move.

Sincerely...an optimist

Is this really the main thing that keeps you excited about this launch? Just for interest, especially as the pricing always was quite predictable

Believe it or not, it's a huge thing for developers. Free OS X upgrade would most likely push the adoption rate high and the developers can drop support for older OS X versions quickly, just like iOS 7.

If the update isn't that big of a deal like many folks believe both ML and Mavs to be, they are not likely to spend money on it.

However, if it is free, those folks are more likely to update as developers push them over with no support for older OS X version.

Better than iOS 7?

I support a lot of iOS and Mac OS users. iOS 7 has been a disaster for some people. The overall engineering of the thin fonts and distracting motion and hip-hop colors has a lot of (particularly older) users up in arms. We've been able to overcome some of this with Accessibility settings, but it was still a poor job by Apple.

I hope Apple is much more careful with any final changes to Mavericks. We really can't take much more of this at the user end. For the first time in awhile, many of the clients are looking at alternatives to Apple again, because of iOS 7. Don't repeat the mistake with Mavericks, just when we're finally getting some Mac traction in the office community.

Hopes for GM:

- Game Center - refresh

- Reminders - refresh

- iMessage* - Polish (or flatten)

*I realize I mention this often, but I'd love to have the "Answering Machine" feature offered in 10.5 Leopard beta that didn't make GM - users leave a video or audio away message, people leave one in return (video would be great for the deaf) - or combine iMessage/FaceTime into one app - seems too many apps scattered around.

- iBooks - Needs a bit more options, but overly welcomed addition

- Multiple Displays - Dragging windows between displays halves the window, intended "feature" but rather odd. Would love 10.5/6 "Spaces", thankfully we have "TotalSpaces" (coming for 10.9 once released). The developer was solo, great guy, was such a hit "BinaryAge" ("TotalFinder" producers) bought and brought him into the company.

- Graphics/OpenGL/Mac Pro -The new Mac Pro w/ AMD FirePro 6GB built-in graphics and one CPU, emphasis on OpenGL support will be greatly needed. 10.9 has made some serious strides (for OS X), but still falls short.

- Remove Game Center - forget redoing it (see #1), get rid of it. It's the "Ping" of OS X (bubbles for Game Center icon in iOS 7? Ok.)

- AFP, SMB, NFT (yes, I went there) - Improve, improve, improve

- WiFi - C'mon already, you sell the hardware and the software, what's the disconnect here? I'm fortunate not to have this issue, but it's evident for many. I've noticed the new "ac" routers make a difference. I jumped in noticing "ac" has become the new "N" standard. With 2 NAS devices, 2 Mac Mini HTPC's, and 20+ networks devices, tests between 5th and 6th gen AEBS's demonstrate a noticeable difference. I bought a second to carry the 5GHz band further, speeds have been phenomenal. (Now fix Airport Utility!)

- OS X Server - Please - eh, never mind. We gave up after 10.7 "Server" ;)

Otherwise, having used this since June, this is the first time since 10.6 that I have been excited for an OS X release. I wish I could wipe 10.7 and 10.8 from my memory. Back to the Mac/power/professional improvements most likely came from developing the soon to be released Mac Pro, no doubt.

That's enough for now :)

Usually there's no major difference between GM and the latest DP. Just more bug fixes and performance enhancements.

does mavericks support 128gigs ram?

Yes although not all hardware supports that much.

MacOS X has been 64-bit for a while. 64-bit means it supports 16 Exabytes. Which is a lot ;)

Seems that's more of a theoretical limit. In practice, 10.8 won't see more than 96 gigs of ram. 10.9 raises that to 128.

It could be entirely possible since this DP's are really intended to test functionality and APIs, not show the developers the fancy new look.

Although if they make major GUI changes, even just swapping graphics files, they still need to have enough testers bang on it before release.

However, they could "just" present it on 12/20 and say they are taking pre-orders with actual availability "next spring".

The announcement said coming this year. Nobody would consider taking orders this year and shipping it months later as coming this year.

If Mavericks is like iOS 7 - Thanks but YES THANKS!!

:p

Same drawn out animations when opening a folder or switching to the ”home screen”? (i.e. Finder)

And white GUI that sometimes are inverted, i.e. black?

No thanks (to these things at least).

As there is no new DP this week I guess Apple will release the GM next friday, with the final release coming a week later along with new Mac Pro.

Excited!! I just hope hope hope hope hope it has better dual monitor support w/ my Mac Pro than ML, L, etc...

Oh wait, are we on the last DP? I thought there would be at least one more DP between internal releases before GM?

I have been very happy with 10.8 Mountain Lion Server. Have you tried it? It has been a lot more stable than 10.7 Lion Server, and features have been added back into it. You should consider trying it again if you have the need.

I've tried it, and I agree Apple has improved straddling the line between enterprise and consumer oriented server software in one release much better. However, I do miss some 10.6 aspects. It is amazing how electronics have changed, a decade ago I wouldn't have imaged consumers having home servers. Digital media, sure, but VPN's, site hosting, directories - companies like Synology supply everything for advanced home users. It's rather impressive.

No disrespect to the author as I'm sure a lot of work went into this, but that's not tasteful if you're trying to get any work done.

A desktop machine needs a heck of a lot more definition if you're working on it 16 hours a day.

----------

Great, somehow my OS X lion is starting to act up. After a while sound through the thunderbolt stops being fed through to my cinema display and wifi reception is becoming worse.

I'm in need of a clean install and I would prefer to do it with Mavericks..

I can top that on my rMBP with ML :p

- USB 2.0 devices plugged into a USB 3.0 hub will randomly stop working
- My Magsafe light goes out when I get to 80%
- Sound randomly disables
- All network connectivity suddenly stops working

This update can't get here soon enough for me!

----------

I'm shooting for free upgrade. Apple wants everyone to be on Mavericks.

I dont think that'll happen. They dont/wont/shouldn't care either way as long as you're on Snow Leopard or above (So you've got the AppStore = more cash for Apple).

I'd bet either $19 or $25 in the US, then just because we all know how expensive a download from the US to UK is, it'll be £25 here to cover the standard AIT*

(*Apple International Tax)

----------

Late October could mean the rMBP is delayed that long?

Please don't say that's the case....
I'm sure you'll survive a whole ~20ish days...

----------

I have yet to see anything in Mavericks that's worth an upgrade. I don't care to "tag" my files in finder. I'll be sticking with Mountain Lion for a while and let them iron out the bugs first.

I'm guessing you're not a power user with 2+ displays then. That's the biggie for a lot of us - they fixed the broken multi-screen support.

----------

That would give you a whole new computer. I LOVE my SSD. It is the best upgrade you can do.

Ditto. I did it to a MacPro that I originally bought in 2009. When Mountain Lion came out I gave it a RAM upgrade to 16gb and a SSD. The first time you do that, the difference in speed and performance is amazing. Well worth doing!

Just wanted to give a heads up on the latest SMC update. It has fixed a huge problem on my Macbook Pro Retina with regards to temperature - it´s now running almost 40C lower than before on idle. Amazing. It´s like a new Macbook for me.

Agreed, mine went from an average base temp of 58c down to 32c. The CPU's at 61c, although it has been on all day and has a load of apps open. I regularly see it up at 80c usually!

The fans aren't needing to kick in at all which is a plus.

----------

I must say that the current build I am on is very stable for my particular needs and has fast shutdown times. I think we may see one more beta and then it's GM after that. Maybe the current build is the last one and will go straight to GM when released.

Are they better than Mountain Lion? Startup/Shutdown on my rMBP with ML isnt too good and never has been.

Has anyone else noticed they have a great (marketing) chance of integrating Mac OS and iOS coming up with OS11 (aka OSii) when iOS gets to 10 also? I think the big Mac OS redesign will come at this point (or there will be one OS to rule all your devices and true universal apps).

I hope this means the updated Mac Pro and MBP are due any time soon in order to coincide with the Mavericks release. Seems a long time since we saw the preview at WWDC.

No offence, but I believe you are making the same mistake Apple makes - trying to compare iOS and OSX, and telling people they are alike .

iOS is an operating system by name only, in computing terms it's like cave painting .

OSX and iOS aren't even compatible, that's how silly it is .

I wouldn't hate it.

OSX is looking more stale than iOS was, and now that iOS has been revamped, OSX just looks even worse.

It is called classic. Like a Porsche. The design is improving across each generation but the main theme is consistent.
