So, not only Apple can not design the phones they also do not want to support their customers by even as little as providing free bumpers. Pathetic.

I really cant understand how a multi Billion dollar company will not offer its paying customers a free bumper to help fix the problem.

You can not in anyway tell someone how to hold their phone, its a disgrace.

It not like people are holding it upside down lol

I have big hand and they wrap around the phone no problem. So unless its sorted i will not buy the iphone...simple.

These things happen, but there is a fix, use a bumper case.

I can understand apple wanting to play it down....but its an issue that needs fixing, not ignoring with standard customer speech scripts that everything is ok, ITS NOT.

Just read the full leaked document. My favorite is "DO NOT appease customers with offers of a free bumper." Wow. I already bought two of these cheesy bumpers and don't expect one for free but the idea of using the word "appease" in this context is truly appalling.

What is the return policy?

Do we know what the return policy/return window is for Apple or AT&T? I got my iPhone on 6/23 and have dropped calls in the basement and at work. I had thought the best plan would be to hold onto the phone until a fix is announced and then decide to stick with it or go back to my 3G. Just wondering if there is a real window for returns? I imaging that if there never is a fix that Apple/AT&T would (should) at least honor a 30 day return policy...

a gyro that may be leading the phone towards a fall if it's not on a completely level surface

I would think that the gyro is too small to affect the motion of the phone.

It'd be like saying that the gyroscopic instruments in an aircraft are dangerous if the aircraft isn't in straight and level flight.

It amazes me that early adopters are shocked, shocked to find something wrong with a new product. It comes with the territory. I'm with Apple on this one. They'll fix it eventually, but let's not forget the most important thing: You have an iPhone 4 and 308 million people in the country don't.

Yay, you!

still, its an intl. product if you are going to sell it everything needs to satisfy the customer. if not wtf are you doing. they need to hold their rep or they'll become just another computer brand. plus the bumper is really cheap to make and if that keeps a customer happy then they should just give one out cuz that customer will return and purchase another product soon

I hope they get out of this one...

Many people seem to focus on the negative a lot.
But the fact is that Apple do have a problem.
It may not be a big problem, but because Apple is in the spotlight now, any "problem" automatically become a "huge" problem.
Why don't people wait and see what Apple does in response...?

If fixed, it would be over instantly and what would the world have left to complain about? Something/someone else no doubt.

Apple, just offer a solution (any will do). And divert the "glass is half empty crowd" somewhere else.

Really how many of us do not use a case?
I'll return mine and wait for the hardware revision that doesn't need a case (a glass phone with stainless steel edges shouldn't need a case - it is near indestructible.)

If the freaking phone doesn´t work like it should, people have the right to change it to a working one with warranty!

Very very disappointing. Its just disgraceful actually.

I have lost a great deal of confidence in the company and I think many other have as well.

No matter how many of these things they sell, this issue is not going to go away.

At some point some one will take them to court, and some good samaritan whistle blower type who either worked on the development of the phone or who has some internal document, will come forward and then Apple will be exposed for this and then forced to do something.

Prolonging this will only in the end probably end u costing them more money.

Very foolish corporate behavior.

The CEO should be ashamed of himself for allowing this to happen.

Every one here should send him an email letting them know first hand how they feel!

We'll see how many the little turd responds to!

I think that say's it all really, about Apple, and about their approach to this situation. Sorry, I mean non-situation. I hope they burn, badly.

Pretty clear instructions to there CS people. If a fix is required, then Apple will make good on it. I had a problem with the HD of the first iMAC i7's and they compensated me $200 in the Apple Store and gave me a credit of another $200 on my original order after shipping me a new iMAC. In my 8+ years of using Apple products, I have found their CS to be the finest in the industry.

I have no problem with them restricting free Bumpers... just based on the responses in these forums there are posters who say they don't have the problem but will ask for a free Bumper anyway. Now who is the irresponsible party? Note the one comment about Apple not promoting accessories in the past... you have got to be kidding me...

Apple will study the concerns and do what is necessary to satisfy it's customers. Believe me Apple will not "burn" over this hyped incident.

I found this article on Appleinsider very interesting earlier:

snippet.......

At the heart of the issue is the fact that the cell phone signal bars reported by mobile phones do not function like a gas tank meter, as most users might assume. Instead, they work more like a reserve tank light. Five full bars can indicate anything from an ideal signal down to just enough to complete a call. As bars drop, the signal meter is reporting that call quality loss is imminent. The reason why some users see no difference (particularly when they're near a strong signal source, such as a Microcell 3G appliance) and others can drop from five bars to none just by covering the antenna with their hand placement, is that the latter group's five bars are indicating much less signal to start with.

So far, the reports of the iPhone 4's antenna issues have been based entirely upon unscientific testing by users who don't understand how their signal bars work. Comments by engineers Steve Gibson and Simon Byrnand explain that the signal bar meter does not quantify a specific amount of signal available (very different signal variations can still result in five bars being observed).

That means that videos posted by users that show a drop in signal related to hand placement are nearly worthless as evidence of a real problem. Users don't need bars to appear on their phone; they need a strong enough signal to place a call or send and receive data.

Gibson writes, "Apple’s '5-bars' cellular signal strength display is not showing the full range of possible, or even typical, received cellular signal strength. It is only showing the bottom end of the full range of possible reception strength."

No tests so far have shown that a hardware issue is to blame for reception problems on iPhone 4. In my own testing, I could not isolate any hand placement that prevented calls from working or lowered the reported data rates available, nor even could I force down the signal bars with a "death grip."

I believe it will be addressed by software, which is why no bumpers are being supplied. In a short time no one will be talking about this any longer.

How do you fix a hardware issue with a software fix...

Seriously, learn how to hold it differently, or use a case...

Really how many of us do not use a case?
I keep the phone in a case - a nice leather one. This protects it from keys, coins or getting dropped. It comes out of the case when I make a call. I'm not wrapping any iPhone in an ugly piece of rubber.

Nice one, Steve!!

FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess that's the BS you would expect when Apple becomes top market cap. Assume the role of MS. Shameful!

I think that say's it all really, about Apple, and about their approach to this situation. Sorry, I mean non-situation. I hope they burn, badly.

Lets see.....600,000 pre orders that took place with HUGENORMOUS issues on the ordering side of Apple and AT&T......Issue with the antennae surfaces 2 days before the actual "launch" due to phones being delivered 2 days ahead of schedule......

What does the general public do....they go out, line up outside apple stores around the world, and buy another 1.1 MILLION phones by Saturday night. And, another 3 days have passed since, and what do people go and do...they head STRAIGHT to their nearest AT&T store, line up on a Monday evening so that they can BUY THEIR iPhone 4 Tuesday morning at 7am......

This is a HUGE non-issue, that's effecting a very small % of the population. I for one do not have this issue. I'm left handed.....I hold the phone exaclty as they say not to.....And mine does not drop calls....

As for Apple.....Your wish of burning badly.......Epic Fail........

i returned both my iphone 4's already, but i have to laugh at item 3, dont stand it on a table on the metal band lol

Call AT&T if you got it through them - they have a 30 day return BUT they start counting from when you ordered the phone. I called on the 15th so I have to return it by July 14th. (though now that there is no fix I will do so sooner)

The bottom left hand antenna is the equivalent to the recessed headphone jack in the original iPhone. It pisses you off, but you learn to live with it.

There's not a single person reading this who's outside of their return window (at least in the US). If you're unsatisfied with the product or its performance, why don't you return it to the retailer?

Wouldn't that be easier than falling into spasms of outrage all over the internet? Just return it.

Mine will not do it, I think it has to do with what signal you are on. But people this was an internal memo to employee's answering call's, that does not mean that there will be no update. I think they will figure it out then release update. It clearly is not effecting everybody and probably is a small percentage. Just my thoughts.
