It isn't like they are making you play a sport or handwrite a document with your opposite hand.

If you really can't hold a phone with your opposite hand or reposition a finger then you have much bigger problems.

Is it annoying? Yes. Discrimination? No, dummy.

I guess I will be returning mine to the store. I wasn't eligible for an early upgrade so I guess this was meant to be. I paid $499 for this phone and I expect it to work even better than my 3GS.

I don't car how many or what the signal bars actually show however I need this phone to make phone calls and retrieve data.

I haven't dropped but several calls and Monday was horrendous. So I called Apple and they had me restore my phone for the second time since launch day. I have had a terrible time when surfing/browsing the Internet.

I would keep the phone if I knew they acknowledged the problem and were working on the problem. I don't know what Apple's return policy is so I'd better get it back soon.

This document sounds like it's the truth and was applied when I called AppleCare yesterday about the issue.

I stood my ground and they would not budge (all I wanted was a free bumper but didn't tell them this). I kept saying is must be a design flaw and the iPhone should come with a free bumper along with instructions stating signal degradation may occur if the user palms a specific area of the phone. The use of the bumper may help in poor reception areas.
Simple.
So the service reps wouldn't budge, I requested to speak with someone so I could get a refund on the iPhone. They tried putting me through to sales but i got cut off. I need to stress that apple at all times were very curtious and polite.
Sales called me back, understood I had 2 options, 1 to hold differently or 2 to "get" a bumper.
It was at this point the nice sales chap said he wanted to send me a free bumper if it would avoid the refund process, I duly accepted!

I am really disappointed. This gives me the feeling that there is not a fix, it is what it is kind of thing. I know for me, people tell me I am breaking up constantly and there are areas where I cannot get coverage but a friend with a 3GS can. Worse yet, even wifi is worse on this phone. I can't stream a YouTube video from upstairs in my house anymore whereas the 3GS can.

I think it might be time to visit the AT&T store and restore my contract and return this.

Lets see.....600,000 pre orders that took place with HUGENORMOUS issues on the ordering side of Apple and AT&T......Issue with the antennae surfaces 2 days before the actual "launch" due to phones being delivered 2 days ahead of schedule......

What does the general public do....they go out, line up outside apple stores around the world, and buy another 1.1 MILLION phones by Saturday night. And, another 3 days have passed since, and what do people go and do...they head STRAIGHT to their nearest AT&T store, line up on a Monday evening so that they can BUY THEIR iPhone 4 Tuesday morning at 7am......

This is a HUGE non-issue, that's effecting a very small % of the population. I for one do not have this issue. I'm left handed.....I hold the phone exaclty as they say not to.....And mine does not drop calls....

As for Apple.....Your wish of burning badly.......Epic Fail........

Try leaving your padded room and travelling to an area of poorer reception... you might just find your so called perfect phone isn't so perfect any more.

Fact of the matter is, no one has shown a video of two iphone4s, one next to each other. both on the same network. one exhibiting the issue, the other not. Thats cos they're all faulty, however the issue is more predominant in certain poorer signal areas.

This is highly disappointing. I ate a hefty VZW ETF for this "perfect" phone only to cancel both my IP4 orders after having read this news. I really hope this situation turns around and starts sucking less soon!

I do notice more and more. Apple doesn't update as much as they used to.

Remember the first iphone, it had an update like every month and NEW SERVICES came out every month.

FCC rules require antenna on the bottom

Then Apple at least choice wisely.... frustrating the lefties, whom there are much less to complain. I'll bet everything I own, someone at some point during the iPhone 4's design... someone said the antenna better be on the left side, just for this reason... not to get the righties up in arms (or hands).

Apple really doesn't have paying customers, at&t does.

I see nothing wrong with the memo as it comes to dealing with the hysteria until the software fix comes out.

I feel sorry for those of you who have truly defective units, but too many people are freaking out simply from seeing bars dropping when holding the unit when this phenomenon has existed since (and before) the original iPhone.

It's not just "bars dropping", you think any of us would give **** if it was just the bars dropping? It's loss of service, dropping every other phone call, not being able to connect to 3G, etc.

you forgot to put "Joke of the Day:" before your thread title. You have got to be kidding. Discrimination? Against what? Left-handers? Thats the dumbest thing i've ever heard. seriously.

Really, just get a case. I did and have no issues. Apple bumpers. My friend... no case... issues.

It's not unfixable. It's easily fixable actually. But it is a flaw in the physical design and will require a physical fix: a case or other means of covering the antennae so that your hand doesn't connection them. A software fix seems unlikely.

Eventually it will, but a new one will spring up in its place. Unfortunately some people will always feel the need to respond to internet posts with zero thought. "FAIL" is the current negative variant and "+1" or "this" are the positive variants.

I am right handed but use my left hand on the phone. So it's not just left handed people screwed over, a lot of right handed people talk on the left.

Good luck with your suit. I didn't read that in the document.

It's a frigging POSITION paper for the call center to use. It does NOT say there is no issue, it does NOT say they're not working on the problem. All it does is instruct the phone drones on how to respond to calls regarding the issue for the time being.

Just read the full leaked document. My favorite is "DO NOT appease customers with offers of a free bumper." Wow. I already bought two of these cheesy bumpers and don't expect one for free but the idea of using the word "appease" in this context is truly appalling.

Why is it appalling? It's obviously not a true fix for the problem, so at best it's an attempt to appease the customer and get them off the phone. I mean heck, you've got people trying to call and get a free bumper just for the sake of getting something free.

Must everyone walk on eggshells and only say politically correct statements that have been scrubbed by the corporate word police?

A person would have to be really stupid with no backbone and common sense to accept a broken phone and not go change it to a working one, ´cause there actually is fully working ones.

So get a grip people! Don´t let Apple fool you to accept keeping broken phones!

Worse cell and Bluetooth than 3GS!

I have one of the new slippery Apple bumpers, and I experience worse cell reception (if that was possible with AT&T), and worse Bluetooth reception on my iPhone 4 than on my iPhone 3GS.

Why don't people wait and see what Apple does in response...?

Because Apple has proven time and time again that they don't feel the need to react quickly. I've had my iPad since launch day and they still haven't released a fix for the WiFi issue people have experienced. This doesn't affect me at home, but it is beyond annoying when I'm at work and other wifi locations. There are numerous other examples here, as well.

So, rather than sit back and wait for Apple, the only thing we can do is continue to harp on this issue and attempt to put some heat on them. Hopefully this results in a quick resolution of the issue. There is no other recourse here.

Erm this is a problem for right-handed people surely? We hold our phones in our left hand so our right hand is free for tapping the screen etc. I would imagine this is reversed for left handed people, so they won't experience the signal drop off.

Wish they'd just get this stupid thing fixed. The inability to make and handle phone calls with this thing is unbelievable. I'd hate to lose the newer screen and cameras, but my darn 3GS handle phone calls with ease and I wonder if best to return it and just wait for all these problems to be resolved and then upgrade again.

so are you actually having trouble making calls?
