Why don’t people just use their home insurance instead ?
Because they might raise your rates when you make a claim. We’ve incurred storm damages before that we decided to pay out of pocket for, rather than filing a claim. Because there was a very concerning possibility that our rates would have gone up too high (considering the increase would be going years into our future of owning that home) to make it worth filing a claim for a relatively modest amount we could afford to cover ourselves. I know it probably isn’t that way for everyone. I think such a risk depends on where you live and your age and all sorts of other factors, as well as what company you’re insured with.

This is great news. It really adds value to AppleCare+ coverage. Honestly, one use of it usually pays for itself. Why not get it?? Maybe you’re very careful with your devices, but what happens when 3 year old Timmy gets a hold of it?

Yup plus the issue of the deductible, mine is $1,000. btw not just increased rates, in some states cancellation (actually non-renewal) is also a possibility iirc but it would be a small claim so who knows.

But if they take number of claims into account for risk factors it wouldn’t be a good idea to rack up any unnecessarily. Your agent should be able to give you guidance if they’re any good.

which carrier, store, or insurance company is offering a better plan?

Sorry but you are plain wrong. Deducatables from carriers and their insurance companies are more expensive than the AppleCare ones before they went even lower.
It's not as black and white. See this for a comparison.
This doesn't include Best Buy and Costco plans.

Apple today updated its AppleCare+ protection plan for Apple devices to cover two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. Prior to now, AppleCare+ covered two incidents of accidental damage every 24 months.

applecaredamageprotection12months.jpg

The AppleCare+ changes apply to the new Apple Watch models as well as the iPhone, a change made ahead of the launch of the new iPhone 12 models. Macs and iPads also offer the same updated coverage.

Accidental damage is subject to service fees that vary based on the damage and the device. For the iPhone, for example, screen damage requires customers to pay a $29 deductible, while other accidental damage requires a $99 fee.

Apple's separate Theft or Loss plan for the iPhone also has a lowered deductible that's now $149 for all iPhones. Previously, replacing a stolen or lost iPhone cost $149 to $269 depending on the device, so it's much more affordable to get a lost iPhone replaced under the new terms.

Apple also recently changed its AppleCare+ policies to make it possible for customers in the United States and Canada to purchase Apple Care for up to a year after buying a new device. The year-long purchase window is available for all devices eligible for AppleCare+ (iPhones, iPads, Macs, iPods, HomePods), AirPods, Apple Watch, and Pro Display XDR) and for AppleCare+ subscriptions.

I’m confused. Isn’t theft and loss included in Apple Care+? The page doesn’t mention any additional cost to it.

There are two different products:

1) AppleCare+

2) AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss

You have to click on the product to see which plan(s) are offered. Availability varies by country and product.

Did they actually confirm it? Or just read that on the phone with you and agree that’s what it says? Because that provision is only in the new (as of today) T&C. The question is whether the new T&C applies to already existing plans.

I told them I bought my AC+ plan last month. They told me the new provisions apply.

Just a heads up for those on the older AppleCare+ policies that may wish to upgrade to the newer one.

My AppleCare+ policy was purchased on 30th August, so fairly recently, and I called Apple to see if I could go onto the newer one. They said it was fine, cancelled the old policy, and moved me onto the newer terms.

I plan on selling my Xr and purchasing a 12 outright for cash.

I will have to look into getting Applecare on this one. I am notoriously obsessive about the condition of my devices, but if the value vs cost equation shifts a bit, I may look at it as buying piece of mind more than anything else.

that's great.

where are all the people who are saying "Apple got rid of the 5W charger to iNcReAsE pRoFitS?!?!"?

They did do it to increase the bottom line. (Profit) Might want to read into what Insurance is and how it's a money making cow for a company.  knows this and it is the primary reason they offer it. The cost of the screen is maybe half the cost of the deductible. Few bucks to install and the customer has the warm and fuzzy feeling that  cares about him/her. No Insurance ever shuts down due to paying out more in claims then it brings in.

My iPad Pro took a forward-2-somersault-with-1-twist dive off the kitchen counter a couple weeks ago. It was epic.

Small bend in one corner.

Got it replaced for $50 CAD, thanks to AppleCare+.
Did your iPad at least get a medal for it's effort?/s

The next step is to bundle the iPhone, AppleCare+ and Apple One under one Package. With your Apple Card.

*** EDIT- Checked again, according to my Phone, Apple acct. it states A.C.+ ends Sept 20th. Cool.
STILL, I do think it should be extended due to the shut down orders earlier this year. ***

-----

Popped into my head and checked my old email....and my iPhone XS Max Apple Care ends today. !

I do worry about my battery, heating..that seems to be SLIGHTLY better after 13.7 (who knows with ios14?)

But I have more black specs in my camera lens (like a DSLR camera with specs on the inner lens, or camera sensor) that Apple Store kinda blew off way back in Jan. I noticed this more just last night filming - time-lapsing an eerie orange sun/sunset outside Philly.

Personally I think they should extend current AC users a month or 2...heck to the end of December since I and so many others had very limited to no access to Apple Stores during the Covid shutdown.

Just my thoughts.

Right here ;) For those of us who don't upgrade annually, who still believe that an $800 phone should last 3+ years, the cords don't last. They yellow, they fray, they break. I don't have a drawer of unused chargers, especially given Apple's reduction in quality and their sales ploy of frequently changing power configurations. Rumor has it the essential-to-operate chargers will now be sold separately. These packaging "savings" should be passed down to the customer if Apple truly meant the authenticity of their environmental messaging. Reducing the cost of an add-on service (i.e., Apple Care), that isn't even complimentary when cashed in, is not a plus service - it's a coupon. Apple is a great tool, but I'm not brainwashed. I won't thank a corp. for stealing my teeth.

Wow, I may buy AppleCare for the first time ever. It was just a so-so deal, depending on how hard you are on your stuff. Hmmmm, what to do...
Check your homeowner's & renter's insurance. My Progressive will cover damaged electronics. Say I spill a can of soda on my Macbook, totally my fault, they will replace it. Make sure to take pics of everything you want covered under your plan, even clothes.

that’s good. So you get a total of 4 accidental damage protection? Will it cover bent iPads?
..and the white spot near the home button that Apple claims is normal ("There's no defect here"), but then are not normal when the customer tries to trade-in the device ("Looks like you have some damage here").

My homeowner’s has a $1,000 deductible and doesn’t cover accidental damage, or loss. Theft, yes, after the $1,000 deductible.

Also, if you make a claim, how much will your premiums increase, and for how many years? That’s a good thing to know in advance, before submitting a claim. Ask your agent first.

Skeptical on the *retroactive* component. If it's true, it's a great value.

An earlier commenter wrote: "I just spoke to Apple. All outstanding AppleCare+ plans are brought into this new T&C. The old one was grandfathered and all the active plans are now subject to these new T&Cs. So we all get the 2 incidents every 12 months!"

If that's true, let's get it in writing. When I go to the Apple website and check on my several month old Apple Care+, it still shows the same old two incidents of damage over the course of three years. If the broadened coverage is true, then Apple has an obligation to update the terms that come up. You can check the terms of your coverage here: https://checkcoverage.apple.com

By the way, at least one of the Apple "legal" documents linked to in this thread applied only to non-Mac items! https://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/applecareplus/071520_applecareplus_us.pdf

The language being cited in various posts is part of NEW Apple Care+ plans. It's not in the old ones.

Sorry to be a doubter or a downer, but people shouldn't assume their current plans have been broadened until they see it in writing!

I just spoke to an Apple support rep, and they told me it is indeed retroactive

im not going to test that by any means, but just thought I’d share. Am in Canada by the way.

You keep saying that they made AppleCare+ available for purchase up to a year in Canada, but the Apple Canada website still clearly says you need to buy it within 60 days of purchasing your device.

I only ask because if I decide to keep my iPhone 11 for another year I may actually want to get AppleCare+ for it before the year is up, but I don't know how!

increasing benefits to a plan that beats most, if not, all other insurance plans’ terms (which subjectively is already a great plan) is unlikely to bring in substantially more profit

insurance companies raise deductibles to increase profits. not lower them.

chargers don’t break. dont know why you’re commenting on the durability of wires which is completely off topic to both what i’m saying and this article.
