You're talking about regural applecare or applecare plus?
I have an old applecare I purchased for my iphone 4 when I first bought it but never opened the box to activate it.
Then figured I'd use it on the next iphone the 4S.
Well here I am getting the i5 and still havent activated it on any iphone. Its an extra year of warranty but since I only keep them for a year its kinda pointless for me.

But Apple added damage replacement to AppleCare. Break the phone, $99 Apple care initial price, plus $50 replacement fee for $149 versus $200 without AplleCare.
Then use one remaining replacement, pay $50 versus another $200 replacement fee.

In the end, this saves you a total of $200 for replacing two phones.

Actually the Applecare I have is the old regural applecare. Not the Applecare plus that covers accidental damage with a $50 deductible.
The one I have just extends the manufacturers defect warranty to 2 years total.

So pretty much what most major credit cards and home owners insurance policies already do for free?

I tried my homeowners insurance and asked if they had a seperate policy at Allstate for an iphone and they laughed at me. :)
About the credit card company didnt know they would cover manufacturers warranty a year after it expires.
Do all do that or some? And would it cover theft or anything like that?

Thanks! I guess that not bad. $50 for a phone that would cost probably $500 out of contract. I've already ordered my iPhone 5, so is it possible to buy AppleCare separately and then register it to my 5?

Applecare+ is pretty much a rip off. Sure, you get a new phone for $150 if something goes wrong...but you spend $100 if nothing ever does go wrong.

Apple will replace your iPhone for $200, no questions asked, as long as it hasn't been lost or stolen (things Applecare+ doesn't cover anyway).

So basically, if something goes wrong, you only save $50 by having Applecare+, but if nothing at all goes wrong, you've still spent $100.

It starts to make more sense if you think that you're gonna damage your phone twice over 2 years, but generally people become a LOT more careful after the first time

Yeah, Allstate blows, but that's another matter.

Most major cards do. Call & ask or surf around their website. I put all of my major electronics on my Visa, then pay it off in full. Register the product, and Visa simply matches/doubles the manufacturer's original warranty & terms.

Almost no one covers lost/stolen, and the ones that do are pricey.

Ok, so subsidized price is $200 & the cost of replacing a dead phone at Apple is $200. What more is needed?

Most credit cards have a short period for accidental but they do cover manufactor. Just not sure why they would pay out if you crack the display? Most if not all require a wok order of services needed. I can't imagine if the paper work says cracked display they would pay out your claim when that's not a manufactor defect.

I don't think anybody gets it.

You are buying peace of mind that should you destroy two phones, you will have saved $200 in the end. And for some people $50 is more than worth the money for one replacement.

What this really does for me, in the end, is let me not even worry about using a case anymore and treating my phone like a newborn baby.

I tend to agree.
Also depends on your past experiences too or how you are in general with your stuff or cellphones.
If you keep breaking your cellphones in the past then its a good idea to get it cause history usually repeats.
If you never broke or damaged one like me then its not worth it cause you're spending $100 upfront to maybe save yourself $50 later.
Just like insurance. Its good to have, its a waste of money if you never need it or use it.
I never had a claim on my insurance for over 16 years so if I think about the money I spend on insurance premiums over the years forget it.

Cool, thanks.
So you have to call up your visa and register the product or you mean just register with the original manufacturers warranty?

I don't worry about a case either. I just think that, what with apples amazing replacement policy that is available to anyone, applecare or not, it doesn't make sense to not take advantage of it. More often than not, you're not going to need a replacement. The reason warranties usually make sense is because the replacement cost is so high that in the few situations you actually need it, the money saved makes up for it.

But with the iPhone, you're statistically wasting money with applecare. You'd have to damage over 50% of your phones to come out on top with Applecare+, and that's just not very likely

I thought they stopped the subsidized replacement fee for products that have AppleCare+?

Not sure I'm going to get it. Had my ip4 for 2 years and never broke it and I keep screen protector on it. Watch I'll crack the screen on this phone if I don't get it... $199 for new phone isn't bad. My blackberries would have been $500.

...Cool, thanks.

No problem; happy to help. Here's the main page for the Visa product protection: Visa Warranty Manager Service
You have to start an account, make the purchase using the card, and then register your device.

Here's the iPhone AppleCare homepage: iPhone AppleCare

I would say 100% definitely NO!

It costs $100 and has a $50 deductible...

If you don't need a replacement it costs you $100
If you do need a replacement and you have AppleCare+ it costs you total $150
If you do need a replacement and don't have AppleCare+ it costs you total $199.

So you are paying a DEFINITE $100 on the off chance it might MAYBE eventually save you $50... That math doesn't add up to me. Unless you break your phone twice its a rip off... I will take my chances and MAYBE pay $199 than spend $100 for sure and MAYBE save $50.

Yeah, that hasn't been discussed or explain at all in this thread. What's your name again?

Breaking your phone just once would result in AppleCare being worth it. It's also $199 plus tax so around $226 in Ontario.

I have over 10 cases sitting in my drawer doing absolutely nothing... $20-30 a pop. I've spent a lot of money on cases. This time around I'm planning on going caseless with AppleCare+. It will save me money in the end.

Also, when you do break your phone... $50 is a lot easier to swallow than $200.

What happens if you break your iphone, with applecare plus, 1.5 years after the purchase? What I mean is if you own a 64 gb iphone, isn't there a chance it is not longer available since the new model it out?
