Let me break it down if i wanted these things by other high quality hardware vendors.
so, BM eGPU Pro is 1359€ in EU, you get a TB dock and an eGPU.
If i want a dock, a vega 56 (new, not 2nd hand) and an external case from high quality vendors it goes like this:
400€ for Vega 56 (Sapphire)
500€ for sonnet 650W
300€ for Caldigit TS3+ dock
---
1200€. the premium on black magic in that case is 159€. which is not a lot.

What do you need the Caldigit TS3+ for?! eGPUs are for T3 Mac anyway and if you use a MacPro 5,1 you can add the card inside.

ASUS eGPU 350€
Vega 56 350€
---
€ 700

where are you buying your IT equipment?

The $399 Vega 64 running in my Hackintosh (as I am currently replying from Windows 10) does just fine. Reading these threads I feel completely justified in jumping the apple ship. Excessive in everything. Good thing my iMac 5K has good resale value.

Because two USB3.0 ports is not enough.
BlackMagic eGPU pro is:
- a GPU
- external GPU case
- thunderbolt 3 dock
rolled into one.

I can go cheaper and say 200€ dock, still, the premium in that case is 259€.

Why the hell are you mentioning the MacPro5,1 in an eGPU thread, it's 6y old and doesn't have anything to do with this.
MacPro5,1 also sucks jiggawatt of power and weighs a ton and needs a god damn machine room if you want to run it properly. (I had the 2008 dual quad, I'm not making stuff up)

Ah my bad I didn't read that you mentioned using a dock, just thought this would be an internal card to support T3, sorry for that.

edit2:
i'm seriously considering the BlackMagic now when i say it like this :D
As long as someone is willing to pay that much, they could have at least made it a vega 64.

I can also get a Razor Core X for 340€, the point was i deliberately chose an expensive case.

BlackMagic was never cheap, none of their equipment was cheap, cameras, hardware, why would i compare it to the most affordable thing you can buy?

Of course I can go cheaper and buy 2nd hand card and everything, that wasn't the point.

The fact is the BlackMagic is the only GPU that can run the LG 5K tho, which i cant get even if i pour 2000€ in an external setup of another vendor.

Edit: also i didnt know that ASUS also has a dock. That's neat.

At that price point they should.

Unless you love being ripped off, don’t buy this. It’s an absolute joke and just shows how little Apple care about its customers.

Because Apple owns Blackmagic? Or because Apple allows eGPUs? Next will you blame Toyota for the price of gasoline?
[doublepost=1545343626][/doublepost]
Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly would be a case where you would need "external graphics" as opposed to just having a better video card in your computer?

Not being sarcastic or anything, just not a "Power graphics user"

Gamers and people who REALLY think those homemade videos make them a creative pro.

Any chance Apple enables eGPU support over Thunderbolt 2 or dual Thunderbolt 2 ports? I would have to buy a new iMac for the eGPU future-proofing..

Next will you blame Toyota for the price of gasoline?

Do Toyota make cars with tiny gas tanks, forcing users to buy expensive, non-refillable external gas cartridges, technically made by Shell but only available from the Toyota store for 3 x the cost of the actual gas (with an undisclosed slice of the profit going to Toyota)?

(Don't suggest it to them - it may be that they just haven't thought about it yet - its not like "cheap parts" and "Toyota" go together...)

Hey Apple ranters, read the BlackMagic eGPU FAQ:

Is the Blackmagic eGPU an Apple product?
No, the Blackmagic eGPUs have been developed by Blackmagic Design in collaboration with Apple.

Apple computers, iPhones, iPods and other Apple products are developed in collaboration with Foxconn and other Chinese companies in China.

What?
no. They're manufactured by Foxconn. Not developed in collaboration with Foxconn.

Of course Apple will continue to support MacOS customers, but they must pay an "innovation" penalty tax of 1000%.

The collaboration part was the price.

I wonder if they just overprice it to gouge those few who have been longing for this, then 6 months later it’s selling for closer to $800. It’s not an Apple product, so the MSRP is just a starting point.

Perfect timing...

Right in the new year when people are looking to spend money.

I can see ePGU's suited for desktops, where they always remain in one place (mostly), but not for laptops, (probably because of the portability.)

You can build a PC with the same GPU (or better) inside for less money.
You always could, and that will likely not change. People who go with Apple are generally not gamers and usually are ok with paying premiums. There are many solutions as we all know, that are better and cheaper than this. By the end of next year, there will many other options for eGPU's with Macs and this solution will be a horrific over priced solution, and patience will pay off.
