Sooo... given the Pro Display XDR is 2.7 cm thick, and the new iMac is 1.15 cm thick, it should be no problem to make a 32" iMac that looks almost exactly like the Pro Display. Just add webcam and some additional ports. Would suit me just fine.

I wouldn't even mind having a separate power brick if it meant that I could get rid of the ethernet cable. If the power brick also had a thunderbolt port it would open up even more possibilities for a clean setup.

Don't really care if the iMac is super thin, but I would really like to get rid of that bezel.

I have a couple of 25" 1440p (also WQHD) Ultrasharp U2520D Dells with USB-C - they are fine for me. however, you don't specify the model you use (you only go virtual shopping and mention what you 'can' get so we can't compare).
Why does it matter? It's a P2720DC. Would be even better if Apple would finally implement DP daisy chaining though..

The USB-C charging hub in the Dell would be no use for powering or charging an iMac though.
How does iMac come into play? I said buy one with a MacBook Air.

Apple are making sure they can cater for video/photographic work so they put more budget into their panels. That's their heritage and reputation and also a great marketing point that is always wasted on some people who vocally have a go at the perceived overkill of a 4.5K 24" panel that does 500 nits (commodity screens are commonly 300) and is on the DCI-P3 colour gamut (they've not gone into details on the new 24" tech page at time of writing).
Yet they offered a 21.5 fullhd tn(?) imac very recently. But suddenly the entry level needs a 4.5K. Without any advantage over macbooks in performance or upgradeadability.

Too many people come out and claim they can buy a 24" panel for $150 without comparing like for like.

Anyone who doesn't like the quality of panel that Apple choose to use for their iMacs are welcome to buy a Mac mini and add the monitor of their choice.
That's my exact point. Most people don't need it, they just like to play photographer by collecting accessories.

If you don't like it - go to Dell.com and stop filling these forums up with noise.

I think I'm quite satisfied with my psychic ability. I prefer to call it an eye on Apple's marketing mentality. Check out my posting record if you have the time and see how far back you need to go before you find my first mention of a 24" panel with ARM CPU and a 14" and 16" MacBook - the latter got launched with Intel, the former is still being rumoured. These are NOT done with any secret knowledge or leaks. They just make good marketing sense at the time as a reaction to the butterfly keyboard issues of the time and the forthcoming ARM CPUs and I justify every point.
Dude, I don't care about your predictions. I was referring to your preconception.

I guess this thing will have an audience, but my goodness what a car crash. 256gb of storage, 8gb RAM, big bezels, huge chin, no height adjustment and a power brick. You couldn't make this stuff up.
JMO but this is a total fail.

Very disappointed but hard pass for me.

I think it would have been more aesthetically pleasing if they didn’t do the two-tone colors. Just go with the same bold color all the way around. The most egregious example to me is the red, where it would be mistaken for pink from the front. That bold red would look great on the stand and chin. That and drop the white bezel and just do aluminum. White bezels always make the camera stand out too much.

Clearly they wanted to do modern version of the original iMac here. And it's clearly aimed at students/homes - they made that abundantly clear when they highlighted iMovie, and tossed in an M1.

The larger model will likely have a lot more power, and come in space grey too. Even this model has silver, which is unicolored.

I was surprised about the chin... don't get that one. I mean I DO - there's not enough room behind the screen for cooling and the speakers, etc. But if they made it 50% thicker, which no one would have complained about, they could have done it. The only thing I can think of is they wanted to maintain the classic iMac design language.

As for the two tone - I am thankful they have one uni-tone model, which is generic/cool enough. Would have loved to see it in space grey like the iMac Pro with black bezels. That will look nice. Hopefully with the 30" model.

The white bezel works better with the pastel front. I just don't like white bezels. Distracting for a designer; not for a family. Overall, I think it looks nice. And sure is fast.

No, 16GB is the max.

M1 is very different in design. It runs very close (for 4K video editing anyway in FCP) to my iMac Pro, within 30% or so, with only 16GB. And my iMac Pro has 64GB. They are different architectures. The GPU is not all that great (about the same as a Radeon Mobile 5500) but it makes up for it with accelerated hardware in other areas like the AI engine, lots of dedicated video encode/decode hardware etc.

This is still an entry level product for Apple.

The VESA option is interesting, that solves a lot of issues with the stand. Shame there isn't a higher end option with mini LED.

Tim Cook is doing it all over again.

The new 24-inch iMacs cost $1,299 and up and are more expensive than the 21.5-inch iMacs they intend to replace.

And the reason why there is no 27-inch iMac seems obvious to me. Apple will soon launch a larger iMac Pro, costing even more money.

And then the price of iMacs will skyrocket. Apple under Tim Cook never ceases to increase the price of products. I can only hope Intel or AMD or Qualcomm or somebody else makes a worthy competitor to the M1 to push these prices down.

Did I read right? They omitted a freaking headphone jack from a desktop computer ? Something apple prides itself on is creatives and their love of Mac.

I get they want to keep it thin but it’s not like someone is bringing it with them everywhere.

Also wtf is with them considering space grey a “Pro” colour ??

quando pensi che avremo un iMac 30/32 "con M1 evoluto? Non vedo l'ora, il mio iMac di metà 2010 è alla fine

Am I the only one wondering why they added a Ethernet-port to the power brick instead of a Thunderbolt-port? The latter would be much more flexible...
