This is so first-gen. Low spec (RAM 8GB, SSD 256 GB) for high price. The revision of this will be much better.
It's the same price as the models it replaces. With faster processor, faster GPU, AI processor, bigger screen, and much better speakers.
Because we all know that 8GB RAM is enough for everyone ...

(or not)
If you can't read Apple's website, 8GB RAM has to be enough for you. Otherwise you order it with 16GB.

I am sorely disappointed in this "Spring Loaded" event. My friend's distain for the M1 Macs is now fully justified... because now we have an iOS device that sports the same chip as the M1 Macs! Which means, there really IS NO DIFFERENCE. Yeah, I knew the M1 was an A-whatever-based chip, but at least it wasn't CALLED an A-whatever. It was an M, which stands for Mac... or at least, I THOUGHT it did. So, the only real difference is the OS... and, really... how much difference IS there?
The issue is a single letter?

And then we have the new iMac... as thin as an iPad (a HUGE one, agreed)... on a stand. Gee... and no more powerful/capable than a top-tier M1 Mac of your choosing (Macbook Air/Pro, or Mini).
Your base model Mac Mini M1 is $699

Your base model iMac M1 is $500 more expensive, it comes with an excellent 4,5K 24 inch screen and 1080p camera, a keyboard and a mouse. That is a really good deal if you ask me. And you expected the iMac to be more powerful and have some sort of a fancy stand at around the same price point?

The only good looking reasonably priced external screen that would pair with a Mac Mini (for me) was the LG Ultrafine 4K which was $799 but then you still needed to spend like $350 on a keyboard mouse and slap a camera on top of that screen, ruining it entirely.

The new M1 iMac looks too much like an iPad on a stand. So, I'll consider it that... a crippled iPad (no touch interface) on a stand... in multiple colors. Gee, wow... call me impressed. NOT.
It does resemble an iPad, except for the size of the screen, the stand which it sits on, the more powerful speakers, connection options, etc... in conclusion, it’s clearly not an iPad. My initial thought was also that the next iteration of this iMac would be that the screen become detachable but then I remembered why I did not opt for the larger sized iPad. It’s too big for a mobile device and many people take an issue with that. i can’t see myself sitting in the couch with a 24” screen.

The tablet and the desktop computer will always remain separate categories and I don‘t think they will ever truly merge with each other.

I also don't understand the need for a touch interface on a desktop computer. I mean, would we all be standing like in Minority Report or sit at our desk and start developing a whole new batch of (repetitive) stress injuries? Not to mention the prints and smudges made on the screen ( I can barely cope with that on a tablet ). You could have something like Microsoft's Surface Studio (which is $4500 by the way) that swivels from a desktop screen to a tablet. But very few people actually would have use for something like that.

I think Apple really dropped the ball on this event... big time. Their "spring" just broke.
Lots of people have been saying that after past events and numerous product releases, yet they (Apple) keep on growing an growing and seem to be finding large audiences for their products. They have not been dropping anything the last two decades. Sure, some things are tweaked down the line but all in all, they seem to be doing a pretty good job for many people.

Did I read right? They omitted a freaking headphone jack from a desktop computer ? Something apple prides itself on is creatives and their love of Mac.

I get they want to keep it thin but it’s not like someone is bringing it with them everywhere.

Also wtf is with them considering space grey a “Pro” colour ??
You are right. I cannot understand why Apple is ditching the headphone jack from the iMac. What is the next step? Is Apple going to announce an IP67 or IP68 waterproof iMac as well?

AAPL down 2% today. That's what The Street thinks of 8MB iMacs in 2021.
Wall Street is adjusting the prices of shares, which does not only reflect Apple's event yesterday.

8 GB iMacs is a bad joke. Apple is offering 8 GB RAM in the base iMac configuration since late 2013. Now, more than 8 years later, Apple is offering this very same amount of RAM.

Yes, of course, you can add more RAM, provided you buy it from Apple (paying full price without any discounts) and pays the high price Apple charges for any additional component.

Well, now its official: we are post Jony Ive.

The design decision must have been like this: Oh look, Jony always liked making things slim, lets do this again .... and forget about the rest of the design philosophy!

The chin without the Apple Logo, the white bezels, the two tone aluminum ...puh
The stand looks like a cheap china rip off .. the old one was that elegant.

AND: the M1 is great for small devices, BUT: its nearly a year old, the next base-core-iteration (A15) ist 5 months away, so this thing will be kind of last-gen in single core speeds in less than half a year. Where is M1X?

Where is FaceID? This whole tunneling to the Secure Enclave is not less work than integrating FaceId in the main thing.
I was disappointed by the processor as well. M1 is great and revolutionary, but so it was November last year. Now, Apple is recycling old news.

It is nice that Apple puts the M1 inside the iPad Pro. But I was hoping to see something more powerful inside the iMac. Perhaps people would prefer to have something a little thicker and more powerful.

And in what world Apple would think one would prefer a red or yellow or orange or purple iMac instead of a black or grey one?

Because Apple knows most of their consumers want thin products. You are probably a "pro" user and think everyone needs a bunch of useless ports - they don't.

Apple is a big company and does research. This design will stay for 5-10 years. You are not their demographic.
You are right that I'm not their demo, but your assumption that I don't understand the demographic is a miss.

All of my friends and family members (not Pro users) have gradually moved away from Apple products that have abandoned features and functionality in favor of what they perceive as "useless" aesthetic qualities.

Just because Apple is a big company doesn't make it infallible -- I could cite numerous sources but I'll let you Google those in your own time :)

You do realise that the 2021 iMac is not using the same silicon and architecture as the 2013 model and is optimised to have way better performance with less memory right?

That is for sure. But there are also tests that show that the M1 performs better with 16 GB RAM.

Still, 8 years have passed, and RAM is much cheaper than it was before. There are several ARM-powered smartphones with 8 GB RAM, and some with 12, 16, and even 18 GB RAM. There is absolutely no excuse for Apple to put 8 GB in the iMac after all these years.

Well off course it's going to perform better with more RAM, the question is, what do you need to do typical day to day work?
If that is only 8GB it makes totally sense to start with that and offer an option. I don't understand why people are ranting over the fact that they managed to give you a better performance with less memory.

I do not have an M1 Mac, so I cannot say for this particular processor.

I do have a MacBook Pro with 16 GB RAM, and, while it is OK for most software, it still struggles with Microsoft Office, which, I must say, seems to be highly unoptimized for Macs. And it seems to be the bare minimum for Parallels to run acceptably. Plus, I have a Windows laptop with 8 GB RAM, and, while it is OK for most tasks, it still struggles from time to time.

M1 or not, I would not buy a computer with only 8 GB in 2021. It may be OK for many tasks today, but it is the minimum acceptable amount of RAM, and it does not guarantee the computer running smoothly for the next years.

It goes without saying that the monitor is attached to the computer, and you basically have to throw your iMac away, with the monitor attached to it, if you cannot upgrade the RAM in the future. So much for a company that brags itself as being so eco-conscious...

But you ARE saying it as if you know it because you are calling it "a bad joke". How can you destroy a product that you know very little about, have no experience with and even dictate what minimum specs it should have had?

You think owning an interchangeable system is more eco-friendly? First of all, it costs more money to develop and manufacture a system like that. Second of all, you are constantly tempted to change and tweak. It's what I did when I still owned PC's. Constantly pulling stuff out and putting new stuff in, because it allowed me to do that. More importantly, I did not make these changes out of requirement but to fulfil this sensation of having best-in-class at any given time. The amount of money I wasted on stuff I did not need is simply embarrassing and to say that owning such a system is more eco-friendly is doubtful.

I have had my iMac for 10 years now. Would I have liked to change something during that time, sure, but the all-in-one concept always constrained me from replacing something that still did it's job. I call that damn eco-conscious.

Looks exelent! Not for my proffesional work (still waiting for Apple silicon Mac PRO)
But i will buy this for my mom. That's for sure. :apple:👍 She are on iMac 2008 model and deserves new one.❤️
(i wish they had 1 TB SSD, that's sad that we stuck at so low storage.
Knowing my mom she will fill up this SSD fast) 😁😅
They go up to 2TB SSD and 16GB DRAM

It is a bad joke regardless of how well M1 uses memory. Because RAM is far cheaper these days than it was eight years ago, and Apple could well put 16 GB inside the base iMac.

I always struggled with RAM in Macs. I had three Macs, and, in all of them, I struggled much more with memory than I do under Windows. I bought a MacBook Pro with 8 GB in 2013, and I had to buy a new computer in 2016 because, among other reasons, RAM was not enough. And it was five years ago, when software was less memory-hungry than today.

Now, after my experience, how would I trust Apple and buy an uber-expensive iMac (yes, they are incredibly expensive in Brazil) with 8 GB RAM just to test it and see whether the M1 processor miraculously makes it enough for me for the next five years or so?

About being eco-conscious, that was not my point. It would be far more eco-friendly if Apple put 16 GB in the iMac instead of 8 GB, so users would stick it for more time.

The audio jack on the left side is gonna look really dumb when something is plugged into it.

I have some really nice Bose Speakers that I've been using for many years with my 2015 iMac. I guess I'll have to see if the sound on this new iMac is comparable but I somehow doubt it.
