I agree that there should a higher wattage adapter included, but I get keeping USB-A. Most people charging an iPhone are not charging it on a computer, and USB-A has become a pretty universal outlet of sorts--more so than the standard North American power outlet since you can find USB-A outlets all over the world, on planes and trains, even on the street at free charging stations in NYC.

I think the main reason they continue to include a USB-A to lightning cable is that 99% of the places you can plug a phone to charge "in the wild" are USB-A.

When have you ever seen USB-C charging ports in the wild? Hell, I see USB-A charging ports more often than I see 120V power outlets.

As a new iPhone owner, I'm going to want a USB-A to lightning cable, MINIMUM.

While I agree to a point when has Apple really ever cared about what the rest of the world has/uses?

Apple has lost a sale this year. I was going to get the XS Max, but the cost and penny pinching is too much of a bitter pill to swallow.

Apple used to get £900 a year from me for each Plus upgrade I bought. Now they’ll get £367-£550 a year depending on whether I upgrade every two or three years.

I hope millions of other customers do the same. That’ll certainly impact their ASP and hopefully make them think twice.

I really love Apple products but they are certainly challenging customer loyalty with their greed.

Agree. You would think that the self-proclaimed #1 camera and #1 phone company would have enough sway to drive the interface bus, as it were. I guess it never really worked with FireWire on computers, but iOS devices are a totally different order of magnitude.

I really don’t think it’s greed; it’s just a lack of courage. And it’s a huge mistake IMHO.

They must have had a lot of those left over from previous phones. What a joke.

So anyone with a newer MacBook is going to have to buy a dongle to charge or sync their phone AND a headphone dongle if they want to use a pair of wired headphones?

Yep. Anker is the savior of all things adapter and charging related. Can't wait for them to put out an MFi certified USB-C to lightning cable so I don't have to shell out for Apple's dinky and overpriced one. Battery life and charging has never been an issue with my iPhone X, but I would like to have a usb-c cable regardless.

I have had literally 7 of Anker's best lightning cables die on me over time. I've never had an Apple cable just die - fray and become an ugly mess, yes. But not just die. That tells me Anker is using cheaper chips in their cables.

Tim Crook is cheap as nails. He's only excited about becoming a billionaire and then eventually running for president (or funding one).

By that logic, they should have 3.5 mm headphones. Multiple times over the past year my wife has had to borrow my headphones for my 6+ because the headphones for her 8+ aren't actually compatible with anything other than her iPhone.

Laptop? No. Switch? No. Airplane? No.

And before someone brings up bluetooth headphones:
#1 - Apple doesn't include those in the box.
#2 - Those work with a laptop and a phone. Barely any more useful than lightning.

I thought last year's iPhone X was rock bottom for Apple. Somehow, I think Apple outdid themselves. Maybe this year investors finally realize how sour Apple's brand has become. Falling sales requiring higher ASP didn't signal strongly enough. Maybe this year is finally the year investors realize that Apple's customer base is shrinking.

Of course, Apple pushed ASP even higher - could lead to this year somehow managing higher profits despite lower volume. Only so long they can manage this, though.

It will never leave its box, I use 12w iPad chargers for my phones. Only charge when I’m sleeping so the 5w would do though.

Slow charging is good for the battery longevity. I use the 5W charger to charge my X overnight even though I have faster chargers like the iPad charger.

Best move, don't include a charger at all. I have a drawer full of unused 5w chargers and 1m Lightning cables, and I'm sure many other people are in the same boat. If they included an 18W charger and a USB-C cord, those would go in the same drawer. I have a Qi charger on my nightstand & another in my car, that takes care of me on current phone & any new one I'd get.

I also have a ton of the 5W chargers sitting around doing nothing - only time I use one is when I'm traveling, for an overnight charge. Otherwise, I charge it (iPhone 8) on my iMac (USBA to lightning cable), or on my old 10W iPad charger.

For my use case, they could just not include it at all.

I can’t think of any reason why Apple wouldn’t at least ship a Lightning to USB-C cable other than that they probably have tens or hundreds of millions of these in stock that they need to get rid of. USB-A is an obsolete port that has been replaced by USB-C for a few years already. It’s amazing that Apple continues to ship it on their brand new, state of the art phones.

USB A to USB C cables are available, so that is not the problem.

Not sure what you’re talking about. Those cables aren’t the solution either, if your phone has only a Lightning port.

Probably smart for them. If they bundled a faster charger the quicker battery degradation would result in a “gate”.

Technically, don’t they “bundle” a charging method >5w vis-a-vis the wireless aspect? Not seen a “batterylifegate” over the last year that I can remember.
